Just a thought, is it ironic that the pics that seem to get everyone the most excited in pro sports photography often don't show any sport being carried out at all?

For example, manager shots, celebration shots, players reactions etc. etc. Yes it's all part of the game, but not actually people playing the game that seem to get people/picture editors excited.

As I say, just a thought.... :-)
 
There's a very good reason for that. Most tabloids (the biggest market for football) want 'tight and bright' shots. Printing a decent goal shot with striker, ball, goalie and net usually means a full to double page spread, unless you've got the shot from an angle and managed to compress it.
Celebrations et al can be right up close and in your face showing the emotion of the player - that's pretty rare in the shot of the actual goal being scored.
 
"action" is not always important to publications. The number of times our local paper snapper has turned up before or after the goal was scored, just has 15 minutes to get something, and they publish a 'non' shot of 2 men and a ball. Good emotion shots are always worth snapping. My luck, the players/manager is usually looking the other way!
 
You guys know a lot more than me about what the publications want, and I guess I kind of know what to send generally. I guess I just personally prefer seeing really good action images. I'm kind of bored of pics of managers looking either glum or excited, or even players celebrating. I personally would rather see an image of a crunching tackle in football or rugby, or in other sports a moment of real exertion. I don't think I'm making much sense! Maybe I'll dig out a couple of pics from one game to illustrate what I mean! :-)

Depends which paper you are shooting for - I'd reckon 70% of the pics I get published by the paper I primarily shoot for are two guys challenging for the ball - if I was shooting for the Scottish Sun then it would be 90% goals and celebrations

Make sure you get them all and let them choose.
 
Got to agree, i think most sports fans want to see a cracking picture but it also has a lot to do with price, if a agency who has a deal with a publication is at a game they are more that likely going to use what is effectively a pre paid picture.

Had 4 pics in the SUN in feb and all four are goal celes.... Local paper use allsorts but they use 4 or 5 pics.. but nationals only use one at lower league level and usually a cele... know your customer :)
