What's wrong with Skype?

Its not IRC. Skype requires an account and to invite people to a group chat. IRC doesn't. Just join and chat with the regulars. We also have people who moderate the channel to prevent it becoming a turnip.

To be honest there has been some funny conversation gone on at that time of the hour.
