Hi all,

I am faced with a bit of a dilemma, my IPod has died and I need to get a new one but I am reluctant to buy another Ipod as I have been reading that the Sony players wipe the floor with them audio wise.

I am currently using Shure earphones so getting a decent sound out of the box is important.

The other factor is Itunes compatability? does anyone own a Sony player the X or S series?

Any views welcome

I've got a NWZ-S639F and I'm 99% happy with it :)

(the 1% is because they don't use a standard mini-USB connector)

I used to use Sony but got utterly exasperated with their Digital Rights Management implementation. Drove me bonkers. Check that this isn't going to drive you mad too before you take the plunge (this is few years ago now though and is hopefully no longer valid).

They don't use the DRM / Sonicstage system anymore. I use WM11 or drag & drop to put stuff on it :)

The only time DRM appears is when I try and watch out of date Iplayer stuff on it :)

Can I assume you mean its got a Sony specific one and you can't hust grab other USB leads t connect it?

Sony's top range has the better sound quality. Ipod has better usability and connectivity, especially when it comes to using them in-car.

If you're an audiophile then there are lots of forums out there that will point out that the iPod is one of the last MP3 players you should go for. If you're not, then it's more down to what you like.

The Sonys come out well, but Archos and Cowan do better (I've an Archos 604, and if Archos ever get their reliability sorted out, then the % would be a great choice. Archos are not good at fixinf issues though ;( )

If you want to stay iPod and want the bets audio quality, then I believe the sound transfer element (between the processor and the headphone socket (can't remember what it's called)) in the iPod Classic is meant to be a lot better than on the Touch (which is a shame really with it's interface).

yup :(, the connector is ok but I'd prefer a 'standard' USB one

However it does come with some very good Sony MDR-EX082s which are sooooo much better than the Ipod things :D

Sony Walkman NWZ-S639FB

Can I assume the FB and FS are the same except the colour?

I woudl not class myself as a audiophile but I do want the best sound I can get without the hassle of loading all my cds onto the laptop again!

I have looked at the Cowon range but from what I gathered they were not as user friendly when it came to getting music on them as it does not support AAC.

Does Itunes convert all CD files to AAC ?

For audio comparisons I believe Head-Fi.org is the place to go (I'm not an audiophile, but I've seen this site referred to every time there's an argument over what sounds better on tests on The Register).

Yes, you are correct (I have the Black one)

There are no DRM problems now.

And you can download i-player stuff as well.
As far as I know you cannot with Ipods. DRM restriction !!!!!! (from the BBC)
Brilliant sound in comparison with Ipod as well. I have both.

Ipod is more popular i think. I have an ipod 2nd- 3rd generation? theres so many. It was the one out 2 years ago. Little square silver thing
