How long does it take to charge these things up. Charged it first time for three hours. Then trying to recharge it this afternoon, every time it shows the fully charged symbol as soon as it's unplugged from the PC the battery icon in the top of the screen shows little charge. It's my son's ipod by the way and it's also brand new.

I have a ipod mini thats a bit like that, seemed to start after i updated the firmware. :suspect:

The wife has a 2gb nano and thats fine, left it on charge the first time overnight (mains charger) because i forgot about it :cuckoo: and now even after a few weeks of not being used it's still shows ½ on the bar.

My mini goes to almost empty in about 30 songs.....good job i took dixons damage insurance on it

Update the firmware (should be on the disk or you can download it through iTunes) and charge it for about 16 hours the first time out of the box to 'condition' the battery - same as you do for a new Moby.

My brother's been through two now though and has finally bought the 4Gb version. But you're better off paying the (not much) extra and buying the big 30/60Gb Video iPod, I reckon.

The company I work for is also an Apple Service Agent.

I see loads of these coming into the workshop for battery life problems and 'dead'.

I would get it to your nearest Apple Service Centre or go to the Apple Website, they will arrange collection.
They don't fix them, they just send you a brand new like for like with the exception of specially engraved ipods...you will lose the engraving on the back cover.

I've tried plugging into another port, will see what happens now.

I've had my 20gb for over 2 years now sometimes I only charge it for a few hours, and the counter might say quarter full but after playing it for a while it goes up to over half full???? But would recommend getting it checked out

Was just in john lewis today buying new tv for the conservatory, and young girl and her gran came in and comlained to the staff that this was the fith time they've had trouble with her ipod nano, seems that it was being left to charge over night and as soon as they unplugged it it lost its charge. the counter person said they'd send it back again but if apple can't find anything wrong with it again, there's nothing they could do...i thought this was'nt good at all.

Charged it up off one of the USB's on rear of the computer and it's ok now, don't know why it wouldn't do this off the front port though.

are ipods a bit of a rip-off? are generic mp3 units better?

Might not be wired as a powered port.

Personally found my Ipod to be great, got it about 3 years ago and had no problems, 40Gb capacity (so far only about 1/2 to 2/3s full) and battery has never given me any problems, charge it once every 2 days I take it out and works fine. Power Meter reading is a bit suspect until its been running for a while but the battery does work as prescribed - approx 8-9 hours. And I use it probably 2 out of every three days for the train journey to work, or if Im about with my camera. Ditch the earphones though - get some decent black ones;)

My daughter recently bought an Ipod 30G to replace her 20G iriver hard disc player. The reason (and the selling feature I'd guess) is the navigation system is slick...and it looks prettier.

Her vedict on the sound quality (and mine having listened) is that the Iriver sound quality is superior. That does not seem to bother her though.

youngsters cant tell good quality music if it was pumped direct into their ears....oh....:gag:

I bought the 30Gb Video Ipod in January and am already upgrading to the 60Gb version next month (or the month after).
30Gb, I thought - never fill that up... My iTunes is already at about 80Gb  after I raided everyone else's iPods in Afghanistan and Iraq recently - great way of topping up your music collection...

Just spent all weekend sorting it out and deleting the huge number of duplicate files. Managed to get the usable (i.e. stuff that I'll put onto the iPod itself to carry around) amount of stuff down to about 52Gb.

That's the trouble being a 40-something - there's loads more stuff you can't bear to be without - all my old Punk and 70's and 80's stuff - Ramones, Buzzcocks, Siouixsi and the Banshees (sic), Killing Joke etc as well as all the ususal suspects like The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young. And that's before all the new stuff and Classical bits 'n' bobs...

Think it's all down to the battery problems, which can only be resolved by being sent back to Apple at considerable cost. In USA Apple have been sued successfully by customers over this problem.....but yet they won't admit it's a problem in UK :cuckoo: I won't get one myself on this basis, going for the Zen 30GB sometime near me thinks.

I'd like a hard disc player but none of them do what I want.

I like to listen to audiobooks while on holiday lazing around....reading with your eyes shut ;). My CD mp3 player has a 10 disc memory so I can take the book out and put various music in...go back to the book and it continues where it left off. You don't get 'bookmarks' like that with HDD players.

I have a 40 gig Sony Vaio MP3 player. It's good for 22 hours of continuous playback off a full charge. I can't really fault it other than the fact that the touchy feely selection/navigation pad is a bit over-sensitive and a PITA at times.

things like the creative zen have better sound quality. ipod looks better, but material quality is worse so they scratch easily.

i actually find the ipod scroll wheel really annoying, its either 2 sensitive or not sensitive enough on ocasions (you need to be acurate with your finger pressure) and the volume adjuster means its incredibly easy to up the volume by accident whilst trying to pause/play/skip. iwish id bought something else, but the compatability of the ipod is superior to everything else which means if i get a head unit i can combine that with my ipod seemlessly so i can control the ipod via the headunit in my car
