Hi,

I've just set up my new computer, and loaded all the software and images.

Everything is ok, with the exception of Itunes. The software loads fine, but when I connect the Ipod, it won't synch, saying that my Ipod is synched with another copy of Itunes.

It won't let me re-synch, saying that I will have to reload all the music from CD - no problems, as I don't pirate songs, but I have 187 albums loaded on to my machine!!

The other problem I may have, is loading fresh CD's as I buy them..... if I can't synch with a new copy of I tunes, I won't be able to load new music and pics on:eek:

Has anybody come across this problem before??

Thanks in advance.

i can only imagine, Doug, that you need to upgrade the firmware in the iPod. This will be mighty difficult as the new updates synch though iTunes! I'd look for the previous iTunes download, then update the iPod firmware, then re-install the upgraded iTunes.

Which iPod do you have?

PS - I have had this issue with a friend who bought an iPod mini on ebay with REALLY old firmware!!

Hi Johnny, it's a 30gb Video Ipod. The firmware was updated about 3 months ago. I can't access the original ITunes, as it was on my old computer which was completely bolloxed:(

If you do a search on the old version you'll find it. Cant remember an upgrade in the last three months tho. Is your library OK on iTunes? If do, reformat the iPod and upload the lot again (saves ripping the CD's!!)

Hi Johnny,

No, the Ipod won't synch, so I can't reload the library on the fresh copy!

If I don't fin a solution, I'll have to reset the Ipod, and start from scratch - not a real problem, because I'tll give me achance to thin out the chaff.

It does this to stop you filling up your iPod from your copy of iTunes, and your mates, and another mates etc.

(Which is why I use WinAmp to do it, because it doesn't tie it in)

What you may have to do is find one of many 'iPod ripping' tools that will take your music off the iPod, then you can put that into your new iTunes library (this is the part where I hope to god you tagged it all properly) and then put back onto the iPod after a format.

Alternatively, email Apple and say 'I had to format my PC, my new install of iTunes is not the one my iPod is synced to, how can I fix that?' and see what they say. They might have a better solution.

I'll think about giving the 'ripping trick' a go.

Thanks.

I've filled a couple from my library DM - no issues.........

Can you reset to factory settings from the iPod menu Doug?

Yes, you can, but it's the only thing it will let you do.

I tried Ipod ripper, but it doesn't work. Went onto one of the Ipod forums, and it seems that it will only work if you buy the program -such is life!

Success!!:D

I found a programme called 'Copy Trans Suite', which offered a 14 day free trial. The trial offered 100 tunes a sessio, but after half an hour, swapping between Itunes and Copy pod, I have managed to transfer 130 albums, which is more than enough to be getting on with!! It can easily replace I tunes, is a lot faster and the user interface is so much easier.

I can't recommend this programme enough:

Hi,

don't have an iPod and hate iTunes but I did try this as an alternative once and it's much better than iTunes and it's free.

EPHPOD

From what I remember it was more versatile than iTunes.

Mike.

Thanks to all who have replied.

Just as a matter of interest, I have found out that you CAN back up your 'pod to a fresh copy of I tunes, without resorting to new software. Here's how (Courtesy of Ipod lounge):

To retain playlists and metadata (ratings and play history) use a third party tool such as YamiPod or PodUtil. I don't use or endorse any of these programs, those are just two names that come readily to mind. Check out the third-party software forums on this site for more information.

If you just want the files, don't care about playlists or metadata, and don't want to mess around with software, then you can pull them directly off the iPod device in disk mode. Open iTunes and connect your iPod. If the iPod is on autosync, it will ask if you want to erase and sync with this library. Tell it no! Then switch to manual ("Manually manage music and videos" on the iPod "Summary" tab). Don't forget to click "Apply" or the switch won't take effect.

After you put it in manual mode, or if it was already, then "Enable disk use" should be enabled by default (you can't use manual mode without disk use). Now you can access the iPod device just like any other removable disk. Open "My Computer" and find the iPod under "Devices with removable storage". Click Tools->Folder Options, then click the "View" tab. Scroll down to "Hidden files and folders" and make sure that it is set to "Show hidden files and folders".

Open the hidden folder "\iPod_Control", and inside of that you'll see a folder called "Music". Copy this whole "Music" folder into your "iTunes Music" folder on your hard drive.

Make sure iTunes preferences are set to "Keep iTunes Music folder organized", and then import the folder you just copied with the File->Add folder to library menu option or by dragging it into the iTunes window. iTunes will read the tag information from the files themselves and the filenames (unintelligible gibberish before) will be changed to show the track names.

What do people dislike about itunes then?

I dont seem to be having any trouble with it...but I guess I only use it basically.
