I want to upgrade the OS of my iphone 3GS from the current 4.1 to maybe 5 or 6.

I am not really sure how to go about it. Could someone pls help me out with this?

My iphone is a jailbroken/unlocked handset. ( i have the original sim that came with it. )

Is it something easy, straight forward thing or i should get someone do it? Especially considering my handset is jailbroken?

Any helpful advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Wait until next week when 6 is released (mind you is it available on the 3?)

Otherwise as the a above or plug your device in and look for the update button in iTunes on the device status page.

Always backup your phone first.

I believe iOS6 will be available for the 3gs. Personally I would put 5 on now as it works well and doesn't slow the phone down, and wait and see how well 6 does for others before bothering.

When you update, via itunes, you will need to jailbreak again. Go to iclarified.com for instructions.

The question is, why do you want to update? What features does the new IOS have for the 3Gs that you need?

If you update, you will definitely lose your jailbreak and if you did software unlock you'll lose that too. There may not be a jailbreak and unlock for IOS6 for a while...

I fix up old 3gs, I've had nightmares in the past with phones that were previously jailbroken when upgrading to IOS 5.1.1, the phones restored but wouldn't activate or register a signal or simcard in the phone, the phones had to be rejailbroken via a special method to get it working again after updating.

There's also a problem with certain unidentified iphone 3s being completely bricked up when updated to IOS 5, if you're phone wasn't jailbroken you could hound apple and in most cases they replaced the phones for people, even out of warranty (they've never admitted to the cause or taken the blame for the fault but many people have had new phones if they persisted for long enough).

It's doable but you'll loose the jailbreak and unlock when you update via itunes and will most likely have to install the jailbreak and unlock again (if the unlock was an unofficial one) to get it working, there's also a problem with the baseband when jailbreaking the phone with IOS 5.1.1 after a certain date of manufacture of the phone, so you need to be careful it's not the date affected ones as it's irreversable if it is.

Best case is it restores and reactivates with IOS 5.1.1 but the worse case is the phones locks up with irretrievable consequences (unlikely but does happen).

Best advice is if you're not 100% sure what you're doing with jailbroken phones is leave it well alone!

jimmy any advice on an old 3g that i have
it works perfectly except that it drops its signal badly and takes a while to get it back
i have checked that the antenna connection is still attatched

There's a few possible causes that I'm aware of,

If you haven't already you can book an appointment at the genius bar at your nearest apple store (they aren't the greatest of help with older models depending who you get serving you)

The part called the dock connector at the bottom of the phone which houses the speaker, microphone, connection for the lead and one of the antennas could be faulty, these are available on ebay for around £5.

There's a tiny brass pin inside (there's a couple in total) down at the very bottom right hand side of the logic board that grounds to the chrome bezel, check this is touching the bezel, some people have rumoured this pin to be the cause of some signal problems.

If the phone has ever been taken apart in the past there's a tiny component on the logic board that can be knocked off, see this link for what to look for and the fix if it is missing

http://www.mauron.net/iphonerepair/

http://matteopisani.altervista.org/iPhone3GS_NoService_Losing_Signal_Fix_Repair_Guide.htm

Also if the phone has been stripped down at any point (to replace a battery etc) and the screw under the 'do not remove' sticker hasn't been removed and the logic board pulled to try and remove it the little tail at the bottom can crack on the underside and needs to be soldered back together (i've seen this a couple of times).

The problem can be software related (apple never admit to this) and if the phone is not jailbroken a restore and update in itunes can fix the problem (be sure to back everything up first, itunes doesn't back up your photos) and see if that works.

As a last resort I've heard of jailbreaking them curing the no signal fault.

Some of these apply to the 3g and 3gs, hope one of these sorts it.

Failing the above it's a case of trawling the internet and forums as I'm sure there'll be causes I haven't heard of.

naveen did you check out the site i sent you ? it tells you all you need to know with step by step guides, ie: links to software/tools etc - i have a 3gs and i did mine myself.
if you contact apple they may unjailbreak (lock) your phone - you need (ipsw 5.0)
