Evening all, as can be seen below my iPhone memory shows 1.39gb used in photo library. However, I only have 5 photographs in my iPhone library.

Any ideas how I resolve this issue and free up memory?

Is there a software update available at all? Try and download an app that's very big!!
 
I would suspect you've lots of deleted items - it keeps them in a folder now (I think for 30 days) and automatically deletes them after this...

There is a new iOS update and it alters how the storage on the iPhone is and it actually freed some space up on mine and I've also noticed an improvement in battery life as well :)
 
Have you tried a factory reset to see if it clears ?
 
One thing you can do is backup your iPhone and then restore it from the cloud, that deletes all of the temp, backup, whatever files that are taking up space on your phone.

Not sure it's needed nowadays as IOS is supposed to manage it but it can be quite a cathartic thing to do anyway.
