Will it have cut and paste though?!

Will it have cut and paste though?!

According to reports YES it will :)

From Apple insider:

A variety of other features may also make it into iPhone 3.0, including support for advanced Bluetooth profiles outside of the basic hands free and mono headset. Existing iPhones have high speed Bluetooth hardware capable of supporting A2DP stereo headsets, a software feature Apple has already delivered for desktop users in Mac OS X Leopard. Other Bluetooth profiles could enable iPhone users to quickly beam files to each other (such as address book vCards) or support the use of Apple's own Nike+ (were it to supply a Bluetooth version) or the company's wireless keyboard, which could turn the smartphone into a basic netbook replacement for business travelers.

Apple could also add support for a Dashboard-like layer of user-creatable widgets built using its existing DashCode app from HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, enabling users without Cocoa programming skills to build or install widget apps that could all run together without the launching delay of a full blown iPhone app. This would also take the wind out of the sails of the Palm Pre's new webOS, which is designed to 'multitask' multiple simple widget at once rather than running heavy duty applications. The ability to run self contained web applications, if only just within the phone's Safari, is also a distinct possibility, given the existing support in the desktop flavor of Safari and the iPhone's existing support for HTML 5 features.

Other features Apple has already alluded to or depicted in its patent filings include a global information page that shows updates such as incoming messages and alert updates on the wake screen for quick reference; global search features; a copy and paste mechanism; support for mobile syncing of playlists and file information from a home computer's iTunes library and then only downloading specific songs when requested; improved push features, including support for syncing tasks and notes; and "Back to My Mac" support for accessing remote files.

Obviously all this is purely speculation at this point but the biggest problems with the iPhone for me are lack of tethering, lack of mms and lack of cut/paste so this could be fantastic......

It's not being released on 17th March, it's just a preview of the new OS and a look at the new SDK.

There was actually an application on the Apple store that allowed you to tether your iPhone and use it as a modem, Apple quickly removed it. A few people managed to get hold of it before it was removed.

The tethering app was only available is the US too!

As long as we get version 3 and it has what is reported then I can wait a while!!

I wish it had a feature to get empty a mailbox in one hit, my hosting company were obviously fiddling with the mail server last week and apparently 'forgot' to switch on Spam Assassin. They've sorted it now but I currently have 10,000+ emails on my iPhone which will take a long time to get rid of manually. :runaway:

Best start now Colin, might be done before you retire

I hope they do add MMS, not because I use it as I think it's a crappy feature, but to stop people moaning that an outdated feature networks only tollerate because it makes them a fortune isn't on the phone.

Delete them on the me.com site. You can select 25 (or 50?) at a time then delete them. It could take you about 15 minutes - rather then 15 years

Tethering would be good (no more USB modems lost at the bottom of my bag) but I wonder if O2 would charge a premium for the service?

Tethering can be done quite easily now with third party apps such as PdaNet, but it would be far better if it could be done straight out of the box without a jailbreak. I have no need for MMS but copy/paste would be useful.

Im pretty sure that tethering will not be included in the iPhone contract, T-Mob used to charge extra for you to "legally" do it. If we do get MMS on the iPhone i wonder how long it will take for o2 to actually enable it for us, if your phone is jailbroken and you use swirly mms you still dont recieve mms unless you convince o2 to enable it.

Fingers crossed though!

I'm just hoping that the new OS means there is a new iPhone not far behind it (one with 32Gb please!).

The only thing that was stopping that was the price of the memory and the fact that the iPhone only has one slot (iPod Touch 32 Gb has 2 x 16gb). Id like to see a whole new iPhone this year, and hopefully o2 will let us upgrade again like they did when the 3g one came out.

But now there are 32Gb drives that only need one slot.

Are we sure this will be a firmware upgrade for the current iPhone or are we looking at what the 'new' iPhone will come armed with...

And it is only a preview on March 17 after all... :suspect:

:p

Unlikely I'm afraid.
With the 2G iPhone, people actually paid for the phone, on top of their contract payments.
With the 3G one being offered in the traditional way (ie. paid (or at least part paid) for out of your contract payments), I doubt O2 will let people upgrade until they reach their renewal date.
With all the iPhone contracts being 18 months, that could be a long wait for some.

I would of thought they'd be keen to offer the upgrade to existing 02 iPhone 3G customers so they guarantee them staying with 02 for a further 18 months.

When we upgraded from the 2G to 3G iPhone the 18 month contract started from the date you upgraded the iPhone. If you look at it from 02's point of view, most 2G iPhone users had the phone for around 6 months, plus a further 18 months is basically a 24+ month contract.

02 would be silly to let a further extension keeping you to there network pass.

With the 3G Phone they let please just take out a new contract starting straight away and automatically canceling their old contract. I did this myself and I had only had the 2G phone for about 2.5 months. I cannot see any reason why they would not do the same again.

As this is a firmware upgrade I would guess it is most likely across the board for all the iPhones but is quite likely to coincide with the new iPhone which should be out in the next few months.

Some tech websites have noticed the hardware string "iphone2.1" appearing in their web logs and the IP addresses originating from cupertino. The version 1 iPhone was "iphone.1." and the version 2 was "iphone1.2".

O2's revenue stream is different for the 2G & 3 though.
2G - People paid a hefty up front fee for the phone, plus monthly payments.
3G - The fee for the phone was low (or free in some cases)

Allowing customers to switch early from 2G to 3G probably cost O2 little or nothing as the cost of the phone was recovered up front.
For the 3G, the majority of the cost will need to be recovered from monthly contract payments. Look at the price difference for the phone between a £45/month contract and PAYG to see the amount of cash that needs to be clawed back.

I had just upgraded my handset before the 3G came out, and the only option I was given to upgrade early was to pay out the remaining time on my existing contract (££££).

The monthly fees were the same before and after 3G other than the addition of the £30 contract if I remember correctly! They just offered the phone at a discount for the larger contracts which would be normal.

My guess is that it will be the same but that tethering with be an option or free with the expensive contracts.

True, but I'll bet profit per unit is lower for the 3G, offset by them making more cash overall as the lower cost of the phone encourages more subscribers.
Paying big money up front for your phone maybe common place in the US, but the initial cost of the 2G appeared to put a lot of people off getting one. The 3G didn't have this obstacle, and it's paid off as they're selling like hotcakes.

I really hope O2 do make some allowances for early upgrade, but having been bitten before on this, I'm not getting my hopes up.

Early adopters, read 2G users here, always pay more. I would be surprised if they do not carry on the same setup for version 3. I does not make much difference to me as my contract is up in august so I can upgrade in July. This is likely to be about the time of version 3.

And think of the revenue lost for unhappy iPhone customers when we are told we cant upgrade!!

"But now there are 32Gb drives that only need one slot. "

Thats why i said cost was the problem with a 32Gb iPhone the price of a 32Gb chip at the time was huuuuge!!

What lost revenue? They subsidise the handsets so it costs 02 money for every user they let upgrade within the contract period.

I doubt they will let people upgrade, they don't with every other phone they sell. I'm sure they only did it for 2G iPhone customers because they had paid for the handset upfront (which is different to every other contract phone).

I can't wait for tethering, I was on the verge of buying a 3G modem, so will hold off for that until I hear more. I used my SE K800i as a bluetooth modem loads, O2 didn't charge me for the data on that.

As a consumer, I don't really see the point of MMS, email is much better, it is just there for the networks to make lots of cash.

not everyone has email on their phone though, and not everyone who has it uses it.

MMS and copy/paste will be ace.

Im sure they way up the pro's v the con's of keeping your existing iPhone customers happy as well as attracting new ones. I doubt the iPhone costs that much to make compared to what they pull in from the handset cost and the continued contract.

tethering would be cool...never quite understood how they can charge more for it though

If this is true it could definitely bring me to get another iPhone in July :D

I reckon the next iPhone will be the iPhone Video, so you will get a decent camera and option for Video recording as well as MMS, TV (O2 are currently the only people who don't offer TV on phone, and the ability to forward text messages would be nice

I think I might have mentioned it before.. but if you're a O2 contract customer (not Carphone Warehouse) and a fairly high user (£45+ per month).. then try getting onto O2 Select.

On the iPhone your contract is only 12 months, instead of 18 and on a regular phone it is only 9 months instead of 12. They upgraded me automatically, and it works very well, for no cost at all. So my next renewal from the 3G is July this year

I've really no idea how they select people, but I guess there is no harm in asking when you call Customer Services, saying you've been loyal and you know Mr X who is a Select customer and can you be upgraded as well.

Other perks include getting your own dedicated support team for any issues.. so not being passed around, and fast track on technical support.

I reckon the next iPhone will be the iPhone Video
I think we'll see the Nano first, then a third-generation iPhone with this new OS.

And I wouldn't put it past Apple to release the Nano with exactly the same specifications, bar the screen size, as the current iPhone 3G.

There were talks of the mini version of an iPhone.. also, over on macrumours, there is a thread that we'll get copy&paste, but no mms or video. ah well.. 1 outta 3 ain't bad :)

It's definitely coming, it's just a question of when.

I can see it being like this.

iPhone or iPhone 3G + OS 3.0 = some of the new features.

iPhone Nano or iPhone v3 + OS 3.0 = all of the new features.

My guess is that stuff like MMS and video will be purported to be hardware specific. Although that does sort of go against what I said about the Nano being a resized iPhone 3G.

The iPhone nano was also rumoured to be a budget version of the phone, the phone is already of mms although video is of sorts.

I don't believe that there will be an iPhone Nano. There is no point to one. None of the apps will work on it because there would be a different screen resolution and internet browsing/phone use would be terrible because of the smaller screen.

I have now entered into my last 3 months of my orange contract, and I am considering pulling out and getting an iphone.

With all the rumors considered, what would your advice be peeps? wait or take the jump now?

Rob

Wait until tomorrow...
