Nope. Quite happy with my Blackberry 9700 (2009). We can only get a weak 2G signal on Vodafone/O2 anyway.

Surely you'd need a minimum of EDGE connectivity to enable the Blackberry services to function?

I don't know, but the phone shows GPRS with one bar, and BIS is displayed. I only use it to download mail copies, so it doesn't really matter anyway.
