iPhone 7

I tend to buy every 3 generations (if that's the correct terminology), so as I currently have a '6' I will get something new next year. Then it's a bigger jump usually, I also just buy the handset outright, I have a sim only contract that I'm happy with and I'm not tied to a contract if I needed to change. I moved down to rural Devon 12 months ago and had been with O2 for years, and I couldn't get a signal anywhere within miles of my house. It was easy to cancel, had to go to Vodafone.

The iPhone 7 isn't going to be a huge upgrade, anyone interested in the technology knows pretty much everything about it by now as there have been so many leaks. Rumours are that Apple are doing less for this one and then the next version will have a big jump. Usually the 's' models that follow a year later are the smaller update, this time it's like having two smaller updates to the iPhone 6. It's going to look basically the same, I'm not sure how I feel about the headphone socket if I honest. I don't have Bluetooth headphones, I was looking at some for a while but I like the convenience of just plugging them in when I want them, not worrying if they have any charge left. I don't wear them out, only at home, so wireless isn't really convenient for me, a wire isn't inconvenient either.

I'm hoping the next version will have wireless charging as that would be more useful, I get through a fair few charging cables. And I'm hoping by losing the headphone socket, making it wireless charging, making the Home button solid that the phone will be a lot more water resistant. I don't drop it into water, and I would want to, but it's nice to have peace of mind and I don't like taking my phone out of my pocket if it's raining - paranoid I'll damage it I guess.

It does make you wonder where the technology is heading over the next few years, look at how far it's come in the last 10 years compared to many other devices. We don't need most of the developments of course, it's just a race of the companies to add features to be better than each other. I've always used iPhones since the first version. I found that phone the other day actually, it wouldn't start up, I thought it may be fun to try it again. I love how it looks and feels, it's nicer to hold than the latest models - they are too light and don't fit well in my hand, I always buy a case to keep mine in as I just feel like I'm going to drop it the whole time.

I'm not at all fussed about which is faster or has better features, I just like what I buy and buy what I like, some of the Android phones look really nice, but I don't want to learn a new way of using a phone and mine just syncs up,to my iPad and backs up everything online nicely. I like not worrying about it. When I get a new iPhone I stick my details in and within 10 minutes or so it's setup with all my apps, pics, music etc all in the same places, settings all the same, email all setup and my messages on the handset - nice and easy.

I'm looking forward to the new MacBook Pros coming out, long overdue, I sold my MacBook Air 3 years ago now and have just been using a second generation iPad Air as my main computer since, as much as I manage with it and don't miss a laptop I want to get one especially for photo editing.

I always buy my handset too and use a sim-only 30 day rolling contract sim. Suits me doing it that way.

Didn't know there was a new one coming out and don't really give a damn, I'd still be rocking my 4s that I purchased used off here now if I'd not dropped in in water a few weeks back, as it is I now own a 6SE as that proved the best value to me and I really rather like it not much bigger than the 4s so a big selling point right there

I'm sorry I just don't get this drooling and fawning over the next generation phone, really do think we as a species really need to reevaluate out priorities in life

Hey if the contract is up and they include a free phone then what's wrong with it? Nothing to do with priorities, some of us have plenty of capacity for other things as well.

Heck the new 66 regs cars will be out as well :p

Anyone ordered WC66ENG as their reg plate for their new car? Hell, it was only 50 years ago, why not still harp back on it? :P

It's not a free phone though is it it's priced into the contract, hence why you can get much cheaper contracts on sim only deals, I've got a phone on contract right now simply as I didn't fancy a big lump out of my account in a single go, however when the contract is up I'll reject an upgrade in place of a cheaper monthly fee, I'll then replace the phone only when it actually needs to be replaced

Of course it isn't free, but some of us do our sums and it works out much better. Not all contracts and usage are the same. Don't understand why the judgemental behaviour is necessary.

I think you mean iPhone SE. Looks like very few people here are "drooling and fawning" over the next generation phone. Looks like most actually ignore every other generation. But if you want to see it another way, then fill your boots.

I'm most looking forward to an improved camera and additional storage. As it's often said, my iPhone is my used camera because I've always got it with me so if the new built-in camera's a decent upgrade then that will be enough motivation for me.

The longer I delay selling on my iPhone 6S+, the less money I'll get for it so if I'm going to get a new iPhone then I might as well get it sooner rather than later.

I've only recently upgraded to an iPhone 6 (from iPhone 4S) and enjoying it, so don't need more than that at the moment and have no interest in the new 7/6SE.

As for Android vs iOS, I've had both and know which I prefer. YMMV.

If you are willing and able to stretch to the top of the range new iPhone Plus (larger screen size) rumours say it has 256 gig of storage - for those who like extra storage I guess! My iPhone has 128 gig and is plenty, my iPad has 64 and I'm constantly deleting files from various apps.

I don't know if anyone gets it but there's an app called Readly. It's £9.99 a month, you usually get first month free to try it, and you can read hundreds of magazines and all their back copies for free. It's not going to be good on a small phone screen, but on my iPad it's just fine in portrait one page at a time. I can tap in to see any section larger, I used to buy several magazines every month - Stuff, T3, What HiFi, a few photography magazines and my other half was buying a few wedding magazines a month too. All of them are on Readly so it saves me a fair amount. If you just read one a month it's not worth it, although if you want to read more there are plenty to choose from.

The reason I mentioned it is that's what takes the storage space on my iPad. It downloads the magazines, you read them offline. Quality is just fine, easy to navigate and I now read magazines I would never have paid for so I get my monies worth.

Over on talkphones.something they are saying they don't get this drooling and fawning over the Canon 5D Mark IV. I wonder what they think when people get excited over a new lens!

It's the same thing really, people get excited about different things, thouh I don't see too much excitement on here, I think it's more people looking forward to a shiny new phone - nothing wrong with that, it's all harmless fun.

Tonight we went out for dinner and my wife accidentally pushed over a glass of wine. Straight over my phone it was drenched.

A. Yes I shouldn't have my phone on the table, bad habit
B. She didn't realise mine is waterproof :) the look on her face when I put it in a glass of water to clean it was priceless.
C. It would be great if the next iPhone is waterproof. We had to get two phones replaced previously through water accidents (washing machine once and caught out in a downpour when catching a horse for my daughter)

That's proper man maths :D

You could, of course, save yourself £700 or so and just not get a new one but where's the fun in that?

When my iPhone 5 died about 15 months ago (by which I mean, I sat on a fence with it in my back pocket and bent it), I decided to spice it up and get a Galaxy S6. Really love this phone so I'm not sure if I'll upgrade when its contract is up. Open to buying an iPhone again but it depends what the new model offers compared to other makes really. Although to be honest I do like the idea of paying like £15 a month sim only and keeping it until it dies!

Sim only deals are amazing nowadays also some of the budgey phones like the wiley fox stuff make the main players just look ridiculous at what they charge.

Have you got a Wiley Fox? I bought their Storm for my daughter. And yes at first you think it is great. What is great is cyanogen as a near stock android. A few months into actual use;
. Paint is flaking off the case
. Screen scratches when you just look at it
. Battery lasts about 6 hours
. Camera is seriously bad in anything but perfect conditions
. No nice fitting cases for it, not even by Wileyfox themselves

It is nothing but just another cheap android phone with slightly better marketing and packaging.

Whilst I don't disagree at the lower end of the data minutes I found that once you are a more demanding user with say 20+ GB of data it was much more economical to combine high end phone and contract.

I don't think anyone can generalise with mobile phones and contracts as we all have different needs.

His sounds good! I'm looking into this now!

Building in hardware which is higher spec on paper doesn't necessarily always mean a better experience for the end user.

For example, in this YouTube video, you'll see the year-old iPhone 6S outperform the new Galaxy Note 7 in a performance test.

i wonder how much of that is down to the apps. for example the 6S has very good single core bench, whereas in comparison a lot of the newer breed of Android units excel at mutli core performance. the apps opening quicker on the 6S could indicate that the coding on the app is only/optimised for single core. if that is the case i'd expect once the apps catch up the benefit of better multi core performance to come into its own.

Whilst technically I don't disagree there is nothing stopping anyone from optimising the app on the Android platform. I mean it's not like the app in question was created using one of those multi platform frameworks in java script.

And ultimately these devices are all about the apps ;)

Like most things in life, you get what you pay for.

The underlying OS may be the same or similar but the build quality and QA will likely vary.

Honestly when I first saw it I thought it was some kind of trick. I'd seen one before where you got to read a few pages of a magazine and then they tried to get you to buy them, others you could read an older copy. I've been using this since December, I probably download a dozen magazines a month now and read 5 or 6 in full and skim the rest. I used to have subscriptions to several so I save a fair amount like this.

And no I don't work for them! Not often we find a genuine bargain. They also add new magazines now and then, and usually add the back catalogue too. I'm guessing I've seen 50+ new additions in last few months. Plenty of stuff I'd never read, loads of the horrible weekly trash mags too but the good stuff more than overpowers the bad.

absolutely, no argument from me.

A change of jobs for me meant that I now use my mobile phone lots more than I used to. More work photos than anything else - but the camera on my iPhone 4 really is not up to the task and I will update to either the iPhone 7 (if the dongle to use 3.5mm jack is included) else an iPhone 6s. I have every confidence that the price of the 6SE will drop about £50-£80 when the 7 comes out to make that choice a bit easier.

I also buy outright rather than pay extra to a mobile company through a previous employers Employee Discount Scheme. I figure that my subsequent model will probably be a iPhone 10 on my current replacement schedule!

!

Just for clarity, there is currently an iPhone 6s and an iPhone SE, the SE is the smaller iPhone 5s style phone.

Thanks for trying to clear my muddy phone typo. I meant it'll be either an iPhone 6s or 7 (or whatever the new is called). I'll expect a great leap of technology either way and just know that it'll make a phone call/send a txt/whatsapp message just like the last one did.

I'll be keeping my 4s regardless of what it has, until it dies (admittedly maybe not too distant now!) I'll keep using it. As I was just saying on a different thread, it does all I need it to, so will spend my pennies on something else that I probably don't need.

Watching it on Apple website. Looking forward to seeing what is coming.

Appstore 2x the revenue compared to Android - no wonder Developer choose IOS.

And I'm happy to get Mario on the App store :) Love those games, Nintendo on IOS :)

Enough to get rid of my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge :)

I am sure that Nintendo guy just said "Thank You Steve" to Tim Cook.

Is it not really slow now though? The Apple products seem to get slower as the software generations roll on. If you put the latest software on a phone which is 2 or 3 generations old, it seems to make it really sluggish. Has been my experience anyway.

Well I'm watching this from my hotel room. Hopefully an new iPhone that innovates and a new MacBook Air with retina screen and an new MacBook Pro with the latest Intel kit to keep it all updated!
innovate I doubt, but gains useful features as per their own twitter account like waterproofing and a facelift.
