I'll be getting a new phone in the near future and bearing in mind that I'm a bit of an Apple fanboy and that we have iPods, iPad etc. is there any reason I should be considering jumping ship to something like the Galaxy S3 over the iPhone 5? (I currently have the iPhone 4 by the way, and find it to be excellent)

Many Thanks
Aled

Do you use iTunes a lot? AirPlay? What apps do you use?

That's the thing, I do use iTunes and tend to have all apps synced across the kids iPods our iPad and the wife's iPhone, so it makes sense to stay with the iPhone.

The reason I'm even considering jumping ship is that the S3 has such a nice big screen, I think that all the other features would just annoy me, I can't really see me enjoying any other user interface as much as the simplicity of iOS.

I think you've answered you own question

Ps. My S3 makes my iPad look / behave like a toy ;)

Stick with apple, you know it makes sense. I've had a brush with Samsung and let me tell you it was the biggest piece of crap I've ever owned. (S2) Never, ever again.

Get an iPhone.

I faced the same decision and bought a Lumia 920 (which I must say is an excellent phone)... but (despite my ipad), I'm not an apple fanboy and I don't like iTunes - in fact I hate it with a passion.

I'm sure the iphone 5 is a great phone, but it's not really that ground breaking any more (in fact quite the opposite)... I found both the SG3 and Lumia were light years ahead.

But, you're clearly geared up for apple stuff, so I might be too presumptuous to say that you'll find dislike in any other product :D and it might just be easier for you to stick with apple.... for ever :D

Yes pretty much, but I'm still entertaining the S3, it's a nice bit of kit. Everybody I speak to, speak highly of it.

You may be able to answer a question for me re. the iPad in fact. Currently, I'm able to set my iPhone up as an ad-hoc network to share the 3G internet with other devices such as the iPad. Can this be done with the Galaxy?

It's still 50/50, maybe even 51/49 in favour of the Galaxy at the moment. It's quite a commitment though as once I buy in, I'm stuck with the contract for 24 months.

That's also on my mind, the iPhone hasn't moved on that much since the iPhone4

I'm actually quite open minded re other systems, I might even give Android a go...

I'm an Android fanboy, and I wouldn't buy an S3. Why? I've had a HTC Desire HD for nearly 2 years and the build quality compared to an S3 is night and day. Samsungs feel like they are made out of recycled crisp packets. Plus I hate the Samsung Touchwiz interface nearly as much as I hate iTunes.

If I was to buy an Android phone right now, it would be the Nexus 4.

Chances are though, being someone who has used IOS for a while, you'll hate android (this doesn't go for all that convert, but most).

Yes the S3 had a big screen, but IMO too big, I have the Galaxy Nexus and the screen has cracked, not because I dropped it, but because it sits in my pocket and due to the size of it, it bends. It has generated enough stress to crack the screen 3 ways.

We have been an all android house, but are becoming more and more iOS. I prefer the majority of android devices and in some ways prefer the OS, but the apps in iOS are better, the choice is better and they work better. The more I use iOS, the more disjointed android appears and the more it seems annoying.

I personally couldn't switch from android to apple on my phone, the mail app on iOS isn't a touch on Touchdown on android and I like the widgets for a quick heads up on my information.. However on tablet devices the iPad wins hands down.

Love my S3, don't understand the comments about the build quality but each to their own.

Latest version of Android seems to have made it a little quicker too.

Not saying the iPhone isn't good, it just depends if you want some hardware you can tweak and make work exactly how you want it to work or hardware that'll only work how the manufacturer dictates it'll work ;)

My wife had a Galaxy and has just moved onto an S3, and in my opinion they feel too flimsy and plastic compared to my HTC.

Not saying it's a bad phone as sales figures speak for themselves, it's just not robust enough for me.

Had an iPhone and changed to a galaxy s2, I must confess I way prefer android. The other nice thing with android is if you don't like the interface it has, root the phone and run a custom rom, or even a different interface, which is what I have done, and I am running appex launcher and prefer it to Samsungs interface, the other benefit is you can get rid of all the bloatware that the service providers load on the phone.

I also run k9 mail which is lovely compared to the standard mail app.

Android is so customisable you can get the phone exactly the way you want it.

I swapped over from an iPhone 4 to a 5 when they came out, and whilst it's an excellent phone, I'm just bored with it now.... I really like the look of the Nokia Lumia 920, it looks great to use.

I'm not a big iTunes or anything else Apple user, but switching over seems such a hard thing to do!

Nokia do great cameras with a slight hint of phone. You'd get fed up with the endless fighting to do simple stuff. I've had Nokia for years and I wouldn't go back now. Converted in weeks!

iOS Mail app is poo compared to thunderbird. I don't use mail on osx either. It's poo also. Nokia mail app wasn't great either and it would just self destruct every few months so you'd have to delete it all and start again. Symbian is lousy, no idea whether their windows os is any better.

I have found another mail app for iOS called triage. It's really good for flipping through your inbox and quickly removing the rubbish and saving other emails to deal with later. Gestures are totally different than apple standard in the keyboard system though.

Like....?

I've got a Lumia 920, and so far there is nothing (that I want) that it can't do.
well there is, and that's NFC payments, it has the hardware, but not the apps (operator dependent).

Edit, ok, I see you're talking about Symbian, yes, that was pants and I moved away from that after 2 Symbian phones... I find the Windows Phone OS much better :)

Are you in an urgent need to move, if your it savvy Ubuntu is coming for phones shortly which should be v good or is that me being geeky :)

Think my Bro has a couple still. Will have to ask him and have a play.

Regarding contracts and costs:

For the last three years, I've stuck to SIM only plans that provide much better value, and buy the phone of your choice SIM free.

Now that current high end phones have been out for a small period of time, you'll save a bit more.

Work it out over twelve months. The SIM free phone plus SIM plan will work out cheaper than a locked in contract. It's a big up front cost but I prefer that for overall cost saving and no silly monthly contract cost.

I paid £450 for my S3 in August, plus £10 x twelve months for a SIM plan over twelve months = £570. The equivalent twelve month for an S3 on Vodafone is £655!

Another upside is an unlocked, network unbranded phone hence updates directly from manufacturer and not network and easier to sell on, and perhaps for a slightly higher residual (no hassle of unlocking required).

Another example:

iPhone 5
£529 SIM free from Apple
£12.50 x twelve months for a 1gb (huge number of texts, 500mins, etc) SIM plan from Tesco

£679

Equivalent phone plus contract (twelve months) cost on Tesco:
£400 phone cost
£30 x twelve months

£760

Thanks for all the advice guys, I've swayed back to the iPhone a little, simply due to the fact that I've bought in quite heavily to iOS and changing would be a bit of a pain. I'm going to Cardiff in the morning, so will have a little play with the Galaxy and the Lumia just to put my mind at rest.

I used to be quite into the IT thing, but I no longer have the time nor the inclination to play with Ubuntu I'm afraid.

Thanks… I may take a look at this

The Ubuntu phone OS doesn't run a JVM so can't run android apps. It'll be a niche product for a teeny slice of the enterprise and a few geeks that like to tinker.

If you're heavily bought into an eco system and happy with an iPhone, stick with it imo.

I've gone iPhone -> Android -> Windows Phone. Love my Lumia 920, camera knocks the socks off anything else on the market and the OS is a pleasure to use.

I've just this minute made a little wooden stand for my s3. Unless it gets broken I really can't see any need to changed it. The battery life's great, camera ( with burst mode) is great it's the best phone I've ever had.

I had this dilemma last year. I've had iPhone's since the humble 3G. but I desperately wanted a phone with a larger screen.

So in the end I jumped from the iphone 4 to a Galaxy note. It's like night & day. Love it. Would never go back to Apple now. This is from a guy who has previously returned 3 Android phones because they were *****.

The SGS3 is an amazing phone and just about to get one for the OH.

The problem with Apple now is they are no longer innovating but borrowing ideas from others and passing them off as 'new'. Larger screen, sat nav and thinner were the selling points of the iphone 5....seriously?

Why get a Galaxy S3, when the S4 has already been outed. To be launched at MWC I believe.

I've still got 16months on my Galaxy S3, it's that quick and powerful i'd be quite happy to keep it another 3yrs and sell the upgrade S4 for a lens.

lol......I've still got an S1, its 18 months old and was a year out of date when I bought it but it still runs everything beautifully, its gonna get GiffGaffed cos..........well why do I need to change it

I went from apple 3G to 4 then to 4s then galaxy s2 back to a 4 then a 5. I'd never touch android again.

You've already said you're a fanboi, so I think you'd be disappointed with the S3. I was torn between the S3 and iPhone 5, and only went for the S3 because I was angry at them changing the dock, meaning all my accessories wouldn't work. I love the S3, but miss the iTunes ecosystem - wireless syncing. Getting music on my phone is now a chore (need to have a look at google music sometime)

Moving music onto my s2 is a piece of!? I simply hook it up to my wireless network, and copy the files over using astro file manager - it's much easier than logging onto my computer, and then having to open up itunes, which is what I have to do with the iPad...

If you use iTunes Match you'd have access to all your music on your iPad without having to turn on your PC and open iTunes.

You're telling me that manually copying over files is easier than opening iTunes - I must be doing something wrong!

Nope, hook up to my nas drive wirelessly....copy files across....job done....I can't do that with my iPad - same applies for moving videos over too!
