iPhone 5 Day Came and Went

Personally I like to be able to do this to my phone. I wish I could show you the actions when you hit the text. Then again my wife loves her iPhone and iPad. Swings and roundabouts.

its not their fault that it's like that. But it is their fault for assuming it is NOT like that. It's not just the UK either the majority of the world is not setup to properly make use of cloud type storage

Not a chance, I couldn't live with the horrible input methods of Android, I have started to give up editing text on my Nexus 7, it's just too stress inducing.

I'm starting to have nightmares about those little blue sliders. And why is it so difficult to touch to place the cursor in a word? And surely one of the brainiacs at android could have invented a "return to top of page" touch gesture to match iPhone touch the status bar?

While I really like using my Nexus 7 for media consumption, the instant I have to interact and write or edit on it, I get the overwhelming urge to throw it out the window :bang:

If Samsung want to copy something else, let it be text input, copy and paste touch control from Apple.

if you prefer apple buy apple if you prefer android buy an android
Like I said before, I bought Samsung as the apple screen was to small and for no other reason
I think you expect too much from a phone

thats a very naive way to think about it. A smartphone of any form is no longer a "phone with additional functions". For a huge number of people, including me, those "additional functions" are more useful than the ability to make calls.

For me, it's a mini computer with the ability to make a phone call

indeed it is
I wasn't being naive I just think some people just expect too much form what is a multi purpose device and moan
for me it is quite simple if you don't like certain features of a device buy one that you do like

I know, I've an iphone4 at the moment. I consider it quite poor in terms of usability compared with the android phone I've also got. Neither do I think iOS looks particularly cleaner than any other system, they're all just a screen with a load of icons, you just get better options elsewhere.

However, I've got reasons for sticking with it just now :shrug:
 
It's not compulsory to upgrade our phones when the contracts are up
you can get a big reduction on your phone bill if you choose to retain your old phone

or move to Giffgaff.

but that's true. my £30 contract ended their best offer was £15 for what Giffgaff offered, i said not good enough and moved.

i've got my eyes on a L lens, so no money to get the new iPhone, therefore i'm sticking with my 3GS for one more year. buying L lenses is a great way to save :D

Not for everyone. I have a permanent large discount on my line already, so don't qualify for any further line rental discounts.

I do still qualify for upgrades so I upgrade when possible and sell the handset. iPhones are seldom a good upgrade deal though, best deal this year was the SGS3.

The US mobile internet network is use en worse than ours, especially price wise (data costs). Last time I was in the states they only had mobile internet in the built up areas just like us. And of course their bridges are made of the same stuff...
 
They need to have a litle revamp of how IOS looks IMO. Out off the three operating systems (IOS/Android/Windows), I really like the look of windows and they have done some cool stuff.

Apple should make it a little more dynamic, the weather app should show what the current weather is doing etc

But doesn't (historically) the infrastructure generally follow the creation of technology that needs it?

I think thats where iOS is a cut above all the other systems. There are so many quality apps that it doesn't need to have a decent native app for weather for example. Windows and andorid app offerings are so few and poor that they have to work harder on their native apps. Apple are doing the right thing - allowing the ecosystem to really produce the exceptional content because that's what their ecosystem members do best.

In your professional opinion is there a way that Android can ever sort out the lack of (&difficulty to find) quality apps? Or is it doomed with more developers not bothering to develop for it?

I agree that the ecosystem is the best and their apps are quality, but I personally think that there are little visual tweaks to the IOS that can be made to massively enhance the experience. I wasn't meaning that they should make a tonne of native apps, but they should make the tiles that display them more dynamic than static. And the system surely has the capability to learn which apps you use the most, and offer some sort of automatic arrangement/ordering for the homescreen. Then place the less used ones out of the way.

You can do this yourself be moving them! It would really hack be off if the tiles moved of their own free will. It's annoying enough picking up my wifes phone and clicking the wrong thing because she has them in a different order.

I know that feeling, good point. I just think IOS has been around long enough that it should have a slight change to make it slicker.

theres lots of challeneges for android on the app front. Because they are a "one size fits all " OS they have to make it for all devices of differing hardware. This makes it much harder for the app developer to build an app because there are different hardwares it runs on, different screen sizes, performance etc. Apple has the advantage there as the pool of devices is lower making your app testing much more efficient

then there's the google play idea that they dont review any apps. Which means if I wanted to within 1 hour from right now I could put an app on google play that was of me farting into the face of norman lamont each time you pressed the screen. That then presents an issue with the app market because seperating the weak from the chaff is harder for the customer

then theres all the different app stores - nook, amazon, nabi, google play. The developer has to upload multiple times for the one OS and go through all the hoops multiple times

Then there is one click purchasing - apple have nailed that and it makes impulse buying much quicker and more likely.

Then there is the fact that apple has itunes and as a result people have been buyign music for years from there and so the number of customers that have credit cards on apples server is way higher than any andorid app store - so potential customers are more.

I have sold more of one app in one day on apple app store than an entire year on google play. The fact is that there are so many reasons why android app stores are really not attractive places for developers that I don't know if they will ever be able to fix it
 
I have had both iphones and android phones, They will both always have their own followers, Iphones work straightout the box, but they are so locked down on the os and other areas, bluetooth to name but one, that for a lot of people this is ideal dont have to worry about settings and the such. Android is open source, and the standard ui that most of the providers put on them work straight out the box and for a lot of people again are fine, but if you are like me and like fiddling then android is better as you can, different roms kernels and the such, it can be frustrating and a lot of fun at the same time.

Personnaly I am an android convert, for my daughter last week when she wanted a new phone she wanted an iphone, why, image and marketing, this was fine by me as she cant mess it up and all the apps are validated by apple, you do have to be more careful with android apps.
 
The Talk Photography App seems to be broken on iOS 6.
Has anyone else had the same experience, and do we know if anyone is going to be working on fixing the App?
 
Well, courtesy of work, my iPhone 5 is supposed to be arriving from Vodafone on the 24th. :)

Works fine on my Gold Master version of ios6.
 
Strange. I'm running the GM too... It shows the splash screen, but hangs at "Logging In...".
 
I've ordered a 16GB White even though I'm not sure where I'm going to source a nanoSim from. My preferred supplier may not have any until late Oct but O2 should be able to supply around the time I take delivery.

Where is he talking about native apps?

iOS needs a splash of UI redesign IMO and some sort of live tiles ala WP would be great, they certainly don't need to be native apps (I don't think WP has a native weather app for example, they are all the standard company ones released on all phones).

the weather app is a native iOS app -it's powered by Yahoo weather (I think) but it is a native iOS app.
