iPhone 5 - Anybody getting one?

What, on the scratch proof metal surround??

They have patented the anti scratch technologies in the casing;

....so I honestly don't think that'll be an issue!

I'm not so sure:

It is now chamfered and while that looks pretty, we've already noticed that on the black model the edge has started to wear, revealing the shiny silver aluminium metal underneath the "slate" coloured coating and, indeed, we've witnessed it on two separate models, ruling out a fluke manufacturing error.

And this review:

They’re finished with a beautiful chamfered edge, which Apple says is diamond-cut; it’s unfortunately reasonably prone to scrapes, however, and after just a few days of relatively kid-glove treatment, this black review model bore at least one small scar.

Oooh, lets think, shall i pay £500+ for something "slight lighter", "slight bigger screen", "slightly faster" hmmmm, how about NO !!!!!!!

C'mon Apple, lets see something impressive, rather than an insignificant improvement.

So you watch two films per day.

You need to get out more :p - or use wifi

No I don't, just downloading apps (though not many) and watching the odd trailer on imdb, you'd be amazed how quickly it goes. I don't watch any movies on my iPad, I've got my purpose built home cinema for that :)

As for Wi Fi, still waiting for BT to upgrade the phone line in my new house, hence why I'm totally dependant on my iPad at the mo (and I fine job it's doing, even with T-Mobile's silly data limit).

Hmmmm, I'd not put too much faith in that review, there's always someone trying to be controversial! Though reading it I may have to treat mine with kid gloves until we know for sure! Apparently a lot of work and as I say, patents have gone into scratch proofing it. I guess the proof is in the ownership, hopefully I'll get mine delivered tomorrow though I won't hold my breath!

You don't have to pay £500 for one, only if you buy it outright.

I'd suggest reading the reviews, it's being regarded as by far the best smart phone on the market.

I would get your network to check your usage because if that's all you are doing its way out of usage.

With similar usage, and adding in quite a bit of Internet radio and a lot of browsing on top of apps and imdb/YouTube trailers, my usage over the last month cycle is only 1.7GB.

If you are using that in 2 days I would suggest someone else is using your iPad and is streaming HD content in great quantities or there's a fault with your account misreporting data usage.

I suspect the latter actually. I think I'll deffo look into that as I've certainly never used as much on my phone.

DO NOT UPDATE TO IOS 6! Having just moved to London I relied on the original maps to get around but the new maps is horrible! Saw these two pics and I just had to post.

I must be a lucky one then, Maps is fine for where i am. Looked up a few relevant (for me) places and there is little, if any, difference - when Satalite overlaid anyway.

Apples mapping system does have some glaring errors! I'm sure they'll be an update to fix it soon. I always use 3rd party sat nav apps, such as Skobbler.

Reports are coming in of long queues already outside apple stores.

Why on earth would you queue up to buy a mobile phone?

And the O2 and Orange shops!

People (including a friend of mine) were camping outside the New York Apple store last night. Now that's sad.

For the same reason people on here get up at 3am to go and take a photograph?

But see their smiles!! I'm guessing its as much a social thing as much as getting the iphone first.

To be fair, it's not "just a mobile phone" anymore, it's a portal to the rest of the world for some people, be it through phone calls, texting, or more so these days, Facebook and Twitter etc.

People seem to be glued to the damn things day in, day out!

Well mine's just arrived and I can safely say that all the time they spent on making it thinner was NOT well worth it ! So it's very slightly thinner, so what! It's slightly taller and blacker :D

One of my contracts was up so I had nothing to loose changing the phone or I wouldn't have bothered. The biggest thing for me would be the LTE but thats not likely for a couple of years in most normal areas. I had IOS6 on my 4s so nothing extra there. Still waiting for a few minutes for the nano sim to switch over to my original number before I activate it.

Mine is on its way. Had expected it on the 1st but looks like it will be delivered next week instead! I think it will be a nice jump from the 4 I have at present.

Hmmmm, sorry, Smug Mode Enabled - TOLD YOU SO !!!!!

As I keep saying and no one, NO ONE will convince me any different, the iphone 5 is just so underwhelming, it does not do anything the iphone 4s doesn't, if it did, I would be more impressed, sorry Apple, but, unless I get a free upgrade, I am sticking with my Iphone 4s with IOS6.

???

Told me ???

I knew before it arrived that it was only marginally better than the last one but as it was a free upgrade to a contract I want to keep and mrs C is having the 4s plus her 4 has a buyer it was rude not to.

Remember, not everyone is upgrading from a 4s, jeez (if I had a 4s, I wouldn't pay for the upgrade either, despite the useful leap in processing power!)

It'll be a huge step up from my trusty iPhone 3!

you should have ordered white ;) the white with polished silver edge looks much nicer than the older white 4s.

And for all the naysayers about it being impossible to cut down to nano sim, the microsim cuts down without any problem and fits perfectly in the iP5.

I don't like white phones to be honest. The nano/micro sim thing depends on the sim manufacturer and how wide the electronics go from the pads! If they use more space then cutting it will damage the ic. I just ordered a nano sim with my phone which didn't cost anything.

So what do you expect the phone to do? Make the tea? Do the ironing? Fill your car with fuel???

All that can be done with a phone is better battery, faster processor, better camera and a tweak in design or size. Not really sure what else Apple could have done?

Maybe, soundbites before launch such as:

"“biggest upgrade in consumer electronics history.”

Increased peoples expectation, and a bigger screen and faster processor didn't match the pre-launch hype?

I don't remember apple themselves hyping it much, just the press hysteria?

What hype / claims did Apple make? Iirc they kept it hush hush?

Actually not, the newer sims don't use the top or bottom section of the contacts, and the actually IC is only about 5mmx5mm in the centre of the chip. If you we're to sand the back of the sim you can actually see the shape of the actual IC die.

This has been the case since the microsim, the outer parts of the contacts can be cut without problem (I had to cut through them on one of my sims - brand new T-Mobile microsim with the larger rounded contacts :cuckoo:).

T-Mobile are making a killing charging £10 for a nano sim swap :shake:.

O2 are sending nano sims on request.

T-Mobile were only about 10 shops up from the Apple Store I went to, they were only too happy to do sim swaps (as in they would swap you a Nano sim for a £10 note ;) ).

Some would call it profiteering.....
