iPhone 5 - Anybody getting one?

Why sell the iPhone 4 and degrade to a worse handset? Doesn't seem to make sense!

It doesnt make sense, i wanted a decent price for it so sold it before the 5 came out. Also wanted the new iPad but needed to sell phone before I could buy. Then needed another phone for Internet and contract :)

Just decided to torture test a sim card, got my sander out with 120 grade sandpaper attached and stuck the sim card to a bench and went mad on it. I only stopped when the die became visible through the back of the sim.

It feels like a piece of paper now and was starting to bend when I pushed it into the sim slot to check it, it's slightly more than half the thickness it was when I started and guess what?

It still works.

Edit

Decided to go even further, I sanded it down till I actually started wearing the copper outer casing of the sim module down. When I had worn a hole right through the outer casing of the die I stopped and retested the sim.

It's still working, so I doubt it's possible with even a modicum of care to kill the sim.

It doesn't matter a hoot now anyway, they're giving nano sims away free now..........well they are at O2

Ordered mine on Saturday because my contract had run its course. I did have to pay the £109 but I'm not worried as I paid more than that for my second hand 3gs.

I have a Samsung for work but I still love my iphone. It's the slightly larger screen thats done it for me as it will be the same as my Samsung works phone.

It's just a horses for courses thing to me, either you want one or you dont. I used to get nothing but Motorola or Nokia but after having a crappy Motorola Milestone I'll stick with Iphones for the forseable future.

I won't be getting one, I don't like the larger screen. I seem to be one of the only people around that wants a smaller phone rather than a bigger one and my 4S is the perfect size for my needs. I'll stick with it for another year and see what the next model brings. I want to stay with iOS, but if 4" or upwards screens is the way forward I'll be forced to look elsewhere.

Am with u there. Yeah, at times the screen on my 4 is annoying but the majority of time is in my pocket so a bigger phone could be a pain.

Very true. For me, I just like the way iPhones present themselves. I very nearly plumped for the Galaxy s3 until I tried one in a shop. Very nice phone indeed, great features and better value than the iPhone. I just didn't like the way the text messages present themselves when typing and reading! I much prefer the way they look on the iPhone!

It's the small things :)

Ordered the iPhone this morning!

Tbh I don't think the larger screen would make much of a size difference, overall. Other than a larger plane, it's actually considerably thinner and much lighter. Swings and roundabouts really.

any one ordered a case or protective back for there's yet

you can bet your pension that the networks will only be activating nano sims for those on iphone price plans. No way I want to pay an extra tenner a month, or get fewer minutes/texts/data just to get a free nano sim.

Guy at O2 said if you buy an Iphone 5 elsewhere he'll give you a nano sim even if your on O2 PAYG

My new plan is £32 a month, unlimited everything! I know you can get cheaper, but I think the iPhone plans are actually becoming pretty competitive.

No idea about PAYG, I have no interest in it, it's the contract plans that I'm referring to, compare, for example, a sim only deal to an iPhone deal and see just how much more it costs.

Not bad, but I want to stick to my £18 plan for 600min, unlimited text, unlimited data.

I definitely won't be giving them the opportunity to change me onto an iPhone plan.

If I understood the guy correctly he would give me a nano sim and transfer my number/contract onto the nano sim regardless of where I bought the Iphone 5 or what contract I was on (if any) with O2

Yep, per-ordered mine on Vodafone as I'm due an upgrade from the iPhone 4. Currently paying £45/month but going on to a £37/month plan with UL calls & texts and 1GB data but having to pay £209 for the 32GB handset (offsetting against £165 I've been offered for recycling my existing handset so really only costing £44 for the handset)
I know I could've saved money in the long run by buying the handset from Apple and getting a SIM only contract, but I didn't really fancy forking out £600 for the handset.

Surely the networks will want to still sell pay as you go sims in the new nano format for people who have brought sim free handsets?

I have generally preferred this way of separating "hardware" and "service" purchases.

They probably will, but certain networks might take some time, GiffGaff for example, are saying it might be months before they can supply nano sims. Perhaps that's why the first "how to" instructions to convert micro to nano were on the GiffGaff website.

You generally find you get a good deal if you ask them to cancel your contract at end of term though. The upgrade I was offered last time round was poo, so just went through retentions. When they ask why (which they will) you are cancelling , just tell them their upgrades are too expensive. As if by magic....

Did you get a good iPhone deal from retentions?

When i spoke with them last year they offered very good deals, but nothing on iphones..

Same - they never offered be a good enough deal so ended up on £26 for 3000 minutes, messages and 1 Gb Internet - and forking out for iPhone 4 back in the day. :(

The internet is the sticking point for me - to get unlimited internet i could spend £10 / month on giff gaff sim only, or £51 / month on orange with a 32gb iphone 5 for £39.99

Orange - (51 x 24) + 40 for phone = 1264
Giff gaff - (10 x 24) + 599 for phone = 839

Or even more sensibly, a used iphone 4 on giff gaff
(10 * 24) + 200 = 440
a third of the cost of an iphone 5 on orange.....

Macs are pretty much essential items for me now and have been since Bondi iMac, and I love iPads so the obvious choice of phone was iPhone but as much as I want to love them I just cannot get on with them and on 3 occasions now found myself heading back to Blackberry..

its mainly a battery life thing with me, I just cannot trust one to get me through the day.

you can LOLZ at my quote cos guess what I have just gone and done :D :bonk:

I just sold my iPhone 4 on here for £250 and was paying £32 a month for 900 mins, unlimited texts, 20 picture messages for some reason and 500mb data. I have been out of my contract since February. I have got the iPhone 5 32GB (same as my 4) for £249.99 an have unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and 1GB for £31 a month. So really a straight swap and a slightly cheaper deal. Thought I may as well.

What has really hit home is, I thought I would be fine going back to an old school cool, retro Nikon 6600. Thought it would be quirky etc (which it kind of is) but didn't realise how dependant we had become on smartphones. Email and google on the go as well as all the other apps that make little things a little easier (not necassarily better) in everyday life. I was quite gutted to be honest at how dependant I'd become on it.

First reviews are very good!

All the reviews are extremely positive.

The iPhone 5 is a great smartphone made even better. It's fast, lightweight and backed by the largest application store for any device. It's also probably the most beautiful smartphone anyone has ever made.

Competition between mobile platforms keeps the industry moving and innovating. That can often present itself as a surfeit of innovation: feature upon feature, piled high in an all-singing, all-dancing device. Right now, the iPhone 5 has the best balance of everyday usability and performance, without the distraction of functionality that is clever but unintuitive. It’s an area in which Apple excels, and it’s the reason the iPhone 5 is one of the best smartphones on the market today.

People have always had lofty expectations for the iPhone 5, especially as the competition stiffens. In delivering a fast, attractive, LTE-capable and larger-screen handset, Apple has met those expectations with a gem.

The question everyone who hasn’t yet pre-ordered wants answered: Should you upgrade? My answer is simple. If you can afford it, yes

Gareth, who is that deal with?

Are there any iphone 5 deals with genuine unlimited data?

Orange do unlimited data as well, but it's £51 a month.

Bloody expensive!!

I'm currently with orange but find their customer service occasionally dire, but is any other mobile company any better?

I've nothing but good things to say about Three. Whenever I've needed to speak to them I've popped into the store (not going to waste my time on the phone to a machine) and have walked out with a solution.

Do they 'piggy back' onto ohter networks in poor signal areas?

Yeah it is, but I think it's genuinely uncapped. But yes, very expensive (though on this tariff the handset is free...).

Consider UW. Best customer service by far. They don't have an 'unlimited' service (who does have true unlimited?) but their top-end tariff on T-Mob/EE is huge - 10k txts, 5k mins & 2GB. sim only £22.50

Havent heard of UW?

The sim free i was interested in was giff gaff, 250 mins (unlimited giffgaff to giffgaff) unlimited text and data for £10 / month. Only problem is the initial outlay on the phone....

Tempted to pick up an iphone 4 for about £200 to try out the iphone before putting down a pile of money...

Take care. There's no Fair Usage Policy as such but an anti-abuse policy. Essentially this means they will kick out a customer who uses tethering or who they think is using tethering or using the sim in a device other than a mobile phone. I've seen one comment about how the threshold is 3GB but I'm not sure how true this is. Sounds about right.

It seems the must have accessory for the 5 will be a black marker pen to touch up the scuffed anodised metal :shake:

3gb for 10/ month sounds cheap!

also, how can a network tell if data is from a tethered laptop / ipad, or from the phone itself?

2gb isn't much, my iPad eats that in two days!
