Yes
dropped my phone today boooo.

screen smashed to smitherines. Theres lots of ebay screen replacements but are they any good?

looking for advice

Joe, before you buy the part have a look at the repair procedure, it's a swine of a job with numerous similar screws (which can cause damage if you put a 1.7mm screw where a 1.5mm screw should go).

The repair is step by step at http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+iPhone+4S+Display+Assembly/7277/1

If you are happy then give it a go.

Alternatively, try one of the repairers, we have started to use this guy
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Iphone-4s...me_Phones_Other_Phones_ET&hash=item2c6d80e746

He is quick (3 day from posting to return) and the cost is less than some places charge for the part alone.

thanks dave I think I will use him. I have pulled an iphone 4 apart before. It ended in the entire thing being thrown in the bin

It's definitely easier (and currently cheaper) than DIY.

I would recommend spending the extra £4 and getting the phone returned RMSD though.

FYI i used that guy and it worked a treat. Sent him the phone on monday and recieved it back fixed today (wednesday) at 11am

I sorted my smashed front screen by taking it to an Apple store - £140 for a refurb replacement

The guy Joe used charges £26 + postage for the new screen and labour to fit. Slightly cheaper than £140 ;).

It's not all about being cheaper though is it - the screen will be inferior, the guy might not put something back quite right and if the phone was dropped it may have done other internal damage than just smash the screen.

If the phone was under warranty then that will be void by having some guy chimping around inside it.

For peace of mind and effectively a new phone with a warranty, with a new battery and all external case parts replaced I thought it was worth it.

Nope it's a perfect match screen. You'd be a fool to pay apple £140.

i wouldnt say foolish, thats just your opinion. like the man said, if you value your warranty then £140 is a small price.

and im sure apple being the sneeky buggers they are can tell if its not a genuine part, it may look the same but does it have all of the same casting marks etc.

My phone is well out of warranty so that's not a consideration for me.

I've had a phone with one of these screen replacements swapped under warranty (it was also having a wifi problem, according to the owner had been happening before being dropped), Apple didn't notice or mention the screen.

With the smashed screen it would certainly not have been a free warranty replacement.

I can assure you I am not a fool - entrusting a £700 handset with someone who is going to take the whole thing apart and replace it with a knock off screen is foolish IMO

And it took much less than 3 days for me to book a genius appt online and drive to the apple store a few hours later where they swapped it for a replacement.

Luckily I am not you - would you give one of your 'brace of 5d3' cameras to someone to take apart?

Good for you
Still doesn't make me a fool

****

please dont take offence, its a turn of phrase.

Im not insinuating you are actually a fool.

But between the two of us we both have a replacement screen that you cant tell the difference with yet I have over a hundred pounds extra in my pocket - that's all im saying. Paying £33 is worth the risk if your phone is out of warranty.

Absobloodylutley correct

You do realise that there are many qualified phone techs who don't work for the manufacturers? Just like I would entrust my Canon gear to Eddie Houston who doesn't work for Canon, but is a qualified tech.

I recommended the guy because we use him for wholesale work, I used to be a partner in 3 phone retail shops, when I sold up I retained an interest in one of them and still pop in once a week to see how things are running. The tech has had 5 phones from us over the last 2 weeks, all perfectly repaired, believe it or not, it's cheaper to send them to him than to buy the part in, and pay someone to do it instore.

For a phone outside warranty it is indeed foolish to pay £140 to have a repair done that can be done equally well for £30.

If you are really worried of possibly losing a warranty (which isn't a given, one repaired by him has been warranty replaced since the repair) then pay out the extra cash, that's a personal decision dependent on what you feel you wish to spend.
