Iphone 4S automatic updates

Hi all,

The other half has an Iphone 4S and on looking at the bills, i noticed that there has been a lot of WAP usage (going over the amount we have).
Anyway, on looking at the bill at 0000 each day, the phone automatically updates, which in one way is great as it's updated, however doing it every day is leaving no amount for doing stuff on line.

I spoke to my phone provider and they said to go into the settings and switch off both Enable 3G and Cellular data.

I asked if this would stop us using the web, she said while at home, use wifi but when you go out, switch 3G back on.

Surely this isn't right? Is there a setting that we can change so it only updates 1-2 a month?

it doesnt automatically update.. it will "call home" to apple for various other things though, that would be chargeable though. even updates would be chargeable..

No it isn't right, you should not have to switch 3G off!
I don't understand what is being updated and why that is using up all of your data, the iPhone OS doesn't update daily and nothing else for normal use should either - request a specific answer to what is being updated.

Ask your provide to identify the wap portals that are being accessed. Could be a music or screensaver type service that was accidentally subscribed to. Ie used once and then keeps phoning home to cause you more bills.

Is the phone regularly at home at that time? If so, why isn't it using your wifi signal to access the net?

I'd love to know exactly what is being updated.

I've had my iphone 4S for a tad over 3 weeks and just checked my usage and I've used just over 100mb with my 3G permanently enabled. Sounds very odd if your other half's is using up loads of data when she's not even using the phone.

On average the amount is between 100-250 mb a night. Thankfully still in the 3 months unlimited so not being charged for it yet.
Spoke to Vodafone again, they have said to take phone into one of their shops or an Apple shop, as they are not allowed in the call centres to access what the dowload actually is due to data protection.

I'm not even sure they'd be able to tell.

Best bet would be to remove all apps and see if it continues

GPRS runs throughout the day to get things such as emails, update apps, etc.

The reason you are seeing a session appear at 00:00 each day is because a new "record" is created at midnight.

So if at 23:57 an email update is done, but it takes 5 minutes to download the email, then you will see two records to cover that update.

If you don't have a decent data usage plan, then an iPhone probably isn't the phone for you.

Don't see what the iphone has got to do with anything. As I said above, I've used little over 100mb in 3 weeks. Before that I had a Samsung Galaxy S3 and the data usage was similar if not higher so I don't think it's down to the fact that it's an iphone, something is wrong somewhere though.

I'd bet large sums of money that it's not Apple that are responsible. If every iPhone used 200 MB (I presume you mean megabytes rather than millibits) of cellular data every night then there would be a mass outcry.

With a bit of luck the guys at the Apple shop will be ably to identify wheich app is responsible. My bet is that you've got something like FaceBook to push information (like images) to the phone.

Also, download an app called Onavo which helps with data.

We have 1gb once the free unlimited finishes, after going into numerous stores and talking about the usage it would have, even they said that would suffice.
Not a heavy user so this is why we are trying to find what the app is that is causing this to happen.

I should have been clearer. I meant the content within an app.
For example, if I'm playing a game with someone, my phone notifies me that they have taken their turn, and that uses data.

I'd expect that to be fairly low usage.. But like I say best way forward is to clear all apps and see if the issue resolves then reinstall one by one checking the usage as you go.

Thank you very much, thank god we are not the only ones with this issue. Looks like a trip to the Apple store.

Just deleted iCloud from the phone, so will see what happens now.

If it is down to iCloud then I can only think it is something to do with iCloud Backup. Do you have it switched on?

It still doesn't explain why it goes over 3G and not wifi. You do have the wifi set up properly on the phone, don't you?

There is a setting in iCloud preferences to allow or disallow backups over 3G.

And it's not an app. What have you deleted - the iCloud account?

Just switch off 3G backups as suggested.

Aswell as 3g backups, I found mine was still hammering through my allowance so it had to be some sort of app with push so I downloaded a data usage app to help. It kept a record of what was acessing my data allowance so I can track it much easier.

If you look at the link Gramps put up, one of the threads is 4 pages.
This doesn't appear to happen to everyone's iPhone, and of those that contributed have said the only way they got this huge download to stop was be removing icloud.
Apple are aware of this bug, but haven't come out and said how to deal with it (nice of them).
Thankfully we are still in the 3 months unlimited, but some people gave said they can't even turn 3g on as it is crippling their data allowance.

I keep saying it, remove all apps and see if it stops.. Then add the apps back on and see if it happens at a particular app.

Exactly. I had to go through this process when an app was crippling my battery.
