Nah still dont want 1 I cant see the appeal, am I getting old? I have always been into gadgets but the Apple products have never appealed to me.

OMG are they MAKING people buy them now??

First of all

I meant Freedom of Choice as to what I do with my phone, I've just bought an iPad & it's so frustrating the artificial limits put on the hardware & software purely because it's the "Apple" way.

:bang:

Ps. The iPhone 4.0 nearly looks as good as my HD2

Can I ask what you would have deemed spectacular from this phone? What would have made you say, now that is a good device? As far as I can see, it has overtaken almost anything on the market in terms of the whole package.

I don't think many have jumped ship and certainly will not now, this has basically 1upped every device on the market for the majority of users.

Name me what you want from a phone that you cannot get from the iPhone

I don't know really. I very rarely think phones are spectacular, the exception being the K750 when it cam out all those years ago due to it's camera and the HD2 screen, 4.3" but still easy to use as a phone.

What I can tell you though is that there was very little we didn't already know about the phone before the conference so nothing new in that respect. What I can also tell you is that I like the styling (except the small screen), the rest of the updates are nothing more than keeping up with the competition, larger resolution (the 2g, 3g and 3Gs were really lacking in that respect), camera with "flash", A4 chip, wireless N, bigger battery and slightly better battery life etc. That's why I say it's nice but there is nothing spectacular. :)

What I'd like to ask you however is to name me one thing that you want from a phone that other phones cannot do. They all pretty much do exactly the same thing.

As for jumping ship, have a look at a variety of phone forums. This last 6 months the number of people starting threads and eventually picking up an android handset has increased massively. People were replacing their iPhones with other phones like never before.

I agree as well that this has essentially one upped the market, but it's a brand new phone, it would be a major upset if it didn't. What we need to be asking is what will happen in 3 months when a new batch of Android/WinPho phones come out? If Apple have only jut pipped the current competition they have a hard time ahead with the new competition. This seems to be shown in the Q1 sales data (have a look in the microsoft thread for details) where iPhone sales stagnated between Nov 09 and Feb 10. Q2 data will be really telling, it wil be interesting to see what it's market share is.

There's a history of the little things making the whole so much more. The accelerometer was one, I think the new gyroscope is gonna be the next.

Yep, I remember having my first accelerometer on my old SE Phone (some time around 2007, a little before the first iPhone came out) and it was excellent. :D

Not entirely sure what the Gyro is supposed to do though?

With so many people sniffing around for the smallest scrap of information, it's hardly surprising there was nothing left to reveal.

They all pretty much do exactly the same thing.

And yet Apples product get's more slating for its lack of features than the rest of them put together.

I'll keep my HTC Desire thanks.. until 17 months when I might erm buy an iphone.

On second thoughts I retract that statement... can't be bothered. :help:

Haha, I was just going to suggest can... worms...:p

Don't ask. Apple have a following, that's all you need to know.:p

You're not the only person that is a gadget freak that doesn't "get" a lot of apple products so don't worry. :)

I would say, multi tasking, call stability, un restricted application distribution and fair native app rules applied fairly to all, so flash and no rejections just because apple dont like it etc...

I really like the palms standpoint, the pre itself was not perfect, but I think palms vision was probably the best of the bunch, but it seems its not to be for a while, so Google it is for me.

Just seen the video of it and this is more like it!

I hated the shape of the old model, so glad I never had one. I really think people are going to be upgrading as fast as they can make them.

Maybe it's time I joined the fun.

Graham

On that note I bid you all a good night.

True, and tbh I'm pretty certain Apple were behind a lot of the leaks this time round too. Nothing wrong with it either, you sound a little defensive to me, absolutely no need to be though.:suspect:

Well they were quite lacking to begin with. You'll see a lot of the same slating hitting WinPho when it comes out with (at the moment at least) a lack of flash and copy and paste.

Apple have caught up so now it's microsofts turn.:p

Not in the least old bean.

My contract's due to run out in August so I'm due an upgrade in July... Looks like the new iPhone could be on the cards then! ;)

Come to papa! :D

One thing they did note - html5 will be able to run apps etc and is fully supported by iPhone 4. Should sort the debate about flash etc.

Everything I need, ease of user interface and intuitiveness in usage. The app store although hated by many is great, I put my card details in once, now I can buy apps at the touch of a button, download to a piece of software that in my opinion like the device itself is intuitive, great to use and works beautifully.

Multi tasking check, it is there on the new OS upgrade so will be available all the way back to the 3g. Never had issue with call stability myself, but looks to have been improved in this model anyway.

Flash is dying, web developers say it is rubbish, not just Steve Jobs, like a lot seem to think. BBC has gone html5 and many will follow, with one hundred million iphone/ipad/ipod touch being sold, companies will not stick with flash when a better platform is available, and compatible with all devices.

Are you a developer? If not I can see no reason to worry about app rejection, everything in the app store is more or less solid and will work without a hitch, or would you prefer anything being allowed and endless phone crashes due to bad software being put out. Suppose it would then be something else to blame Steve Jobs for.

I am not a developer but a good friend is so I see alot more on this side that others I suppose, and I do try to come up with ideas for the company, but the app rules are a pain in the rear end mostly lol, but regarding multitasking iphone os4 does not multitask it just has very good state management with a couple tricks, the 3g wont get this part at all as it "cant handle it" (new device is coming now and your 2 years are up to pay up again if you want apple treats) the marketing speak it "it has multi tasking, and you can go to any app and its exactly as you left it" ie its not ran any more but that is a good compramise but is just saving its state out to memory then reloading it. Things like skype get a bit more but then they already let skype break the app store rules on use of private api calls that no other app could get through, so I doubt you will see any competition there.

Flash itself is not a single compelling item but what it stands for I suppose is more important, its an option people might want, there are alternatives, but html5 is not a standard yet and the only reason people are rushing with content in it, is to keep the apple sheep happy as they dont like seeing web pages with that big red X (i have flash blocked on firefox and then only let some through) as its mostly adverts, and a cynical me might even sudgest thats what apple wont let them as then they can control the adverts (iAdds) and thus the revenue, they know the only other player then is google adverts really.

The other pain is the need for native code, this makes it hard to code for more than once device using frameworks, this maked you "focus" more time on the iphone, I suppose the idea is a better output, but tbh most people probably have x budget and making more work will not increase it and will ultimatly mean poorer titles.

Also things like tethering, why do apple feel the need to try to lock it down so much, you iphone can tether with the pc, but for some reason the ipad cannot tether to an iphone but is more than happy to tether to a google device on 2.2 ? crazy restrictions for no reason.

Regarding call stability, apple really need to get some GSM engineers poached from Nokia or somewhere onboard to improve the phone side, most people I know agree its not as good as their old nokia and thoes i meet in the industry just shake their head in pain, god knows what the actual carriers think as i get the impression it has 0 grace there and just drops and starts sessions at will really causing havoc with the system. The big issue with calls I think is when you go from 3g to 2g or back I dont think it can transfer the call as thoes systems are totally different (frequency and everything). Its fairly minor but they bang their drum very loudly and have had years not to try and address it and have just not bothered, pretty lazy i think :(

All this a side, the new phone looks better than the last lot which ive never really liked the curved shape, its now i think at a stage that apart from its pizzaz and bling is about as good functionality wise as a Nokia Symbian from 3~5 years ago (the other big players are all playing catchup as well) and can really hold its head as a "smart" phone, not just a flash app playing toy with a web browser. The hardware looks very nice and I am quite keen to play with one for a bit,

but I still cant see a reason to commit to 24months of high contract cost when other devices are similar and can be had alot more competitivly. That said I cant see why anyone would be unhappy if they got this (bar the contract and cost), it is a nice device.

IT does push the market ahead ***, especially knowing every year they will try to up the game again, but tbh they really are struggling now I think the main problem is the battery, there is not a small enough battery with enough juice to power these beasts, they can pack alot more into the form factor if they wanted but it would only last half a day at best, if apple and htc and fellow high end phone makers want to continue this upward trend someone needs to come up with a killer battery idea,

I see apple have patented a solar panel that sits under the glass on the screen to try and harvest some energy back, this could be a good idea, but most phones go in cases and then in your pocket so I am not sure how much extra it could really get :(

Will and others,

iTunes 9.2 beta is out - if you download it and do a check for updates install you dont have to wipe the iPhone to load the GM.

My contracts up for renewal next month, but I can get a new phone this month. Might just wait for this then! Has there been a date specified for the UK release yet?

Ah sweet. I can get my upgrade from the 17th onwards. Guess I'll wait for this then :).

Looks nice, but nothing unexpected really. They've done just enough to stick their noses ahead of the competition.....only problem for Apple is that the competition aren't 3 years behind any more. Expect new models from HTC in the next few months that move the game on again.

Still amazed at video calling...talk about flogging a dead horse.

Did anyone notice the small print on the Apple iPhone 4 site... :suspect:

"1. Multitasking is available with apps that have been developed to work with iOS 4." ...

Does this mean ALL those apps we all already have will NOT multi-task... ..tsk,tsk, tsk... :cuckoo:

:p

Unfortunately yes but I think it is only minor tweaks to get them to pause/multitask....

Cant imagine many wont set up to support it with an update.

I wonder how much it will cost on pay and go, I'm not interested in signing any contracts. My 32gb 3gs was £500+
