I've been fortunate enough that muy grandad has managed to get iPhone 4 on his 02 contract and is giving it me! :D:love: however I'm on vodafone...it will obviously be locked to 02. Now I remember reading that you can get them officially unlocked form 02 now, but does this ring true with the 4 or just the 3GS? I'd like to have it completely unlocked as then I'll be able to put in local sims etc when abroad.

If anyone has any advice, it would be much appreciated. :)

EDIT I don't want to go anywhere near the unofficial jailbreak, unlock etc!

Just fill in the unlocking form on this page and you'll also find out.....

I don't think o2 are unlocking the 4 on request yet, they will normally refuse saying it has to be used on o2 for 12 months first. I did see someone on the forum at What Mobile say that after complaining to a manager they did manage to get it done (I think they were going to a country without an o2 roaming agreement).

well I've found out that 02 do not unlock iPhone 4 yet - only the older ones. :( So it means getting it unlocked elsewhere (not jailbroken, not bothered/interested with that , just want it sim free). I've found this company http://uk.3g-unlock.net/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=optima&utm_campaign=ul-iphone4-uk&gclid=CKiI-JCvsqUCFVBO4QodhWq8Yg

Does anyone know if I get it unlocked, would this interfere with the iTunes synching in any way etc?

To unlock unofficially you have to jailbreak. This is what I did on my iPhone.

This is just ridiculous and I would never buy an iphone from O2 if that is their policy. Basically it means that every time I leave the UK I'm pretty much FORCED to pay £££ to roam instead of putting in a cheap local sim.

And why would you pay a company to do it when it can be done for free?

Becasue I do not want all the (IMO) rubbish and alterations that comes with a jail break. I basically just want it sim free, but 02 refuse to do that, so I thought the nearest is unlocking it?

EDIT Just read above that I need to jail break to unlock... If I were to jail break it, can it still be used normally - without altering the themes etc etc, and still sync normally? And the most important, it probably isn;'t covered by apple if jailbroken!

Yes, the only reason I have jailbroken my iPhone is because I have to to get an unlock.
You have an app put on the screen called Cydia, but you don't have to download anything from it.

oh right. hmm well looks like its the only option. Which jail break software did you use?
And that definitely still syncs fine as usual on yours? thanks :)

Yeh it syncs fine.
You wouldn't know I'd done anything to it other than the Cydia app (which can't be removed unfortunately).

Do you have a Windows computer or a Mac?

Check your software version before going any further, if your iPhone is on ios 4.1 then there is no unlock available yet.

The rumuors are that the unlock developers are waiting for ios 4.2 to be released before they will release their unlocker for 4.1 ( as it will hopefully also then work for 4.2).

As I posted yesterday though, Lawrence should push it a bit with o2, I do know of someone who did manage to get o2 to unlock by escalating the complaint to management, and doing a bit of research and finding out which countries don't have an agreement for roaming with o2 and arranging a trip there ;)

O2 then decided to give the unlock as a goodwill gesture.

That's not a bad plan. ;-)

I'm on Mac, so that shouldn't be a problem. hmm it gets darker! TBH, I dont know yet - my grandad has just got the phone, but he's using it until next week (when his micro sim adapter comes so he can use his contract sim in 3GS). I'd imagine it is on the latest - he only got it last week. I'll do some research with 02 and roaming (Thanks Dave), other wise I guess I'm snookered until they update it
