iPhone 4 signal problems

I don't think there is any need for the modified photo...

I think the wives are already wondering if they will be turfed out of the bed soon... ;)

Here is the latest crock from Apple:
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2010/07/02appleletter.html

So if the iPhone 4's have been over-reading the sig strength, then tell me, Apple, how is my fully working 3G showing the same signal strength!? I've never heard such a load of rubbish.

If 4.0.1 is just going to recalibrate the sig meter, then there is no hope at all.

I've got my replacement phone from o2 today. Waiting for it to complete syncing before I test it.

Oh dear! Now as you know I am first to jump to defense, but What a crock of ****. They keep digging themselves deeper on this one.

It seems that was going to be the expected outcome according to the gadget websites. Fiddle with the signal strength indicator....

I can't see them being able to do anything else though tbh, unless they redesign the entire phone (if it is a design problem not manufacturing problem)..

Thought I'd add that I picked up a HTC Desire for free on my upgrade just yesterday and I can make calls and everything :D

Not saying it should happen, they bodged it on release, but it will be addressed in a software update. Even Apple could not handle the fallout from this if there is no remedy.

Similar problems happen to a lot of phones on release day models, just because it is Apple and the volume the problem gets magnified.

People are saying it is a relatively simple fix via update, as the contact of hands in the "Grip of death" can be compensated for via stuff that goes way over my head in terms of the banding etc.

It will be resolved and the phone will still be amazing in terms of what it offers, just that a cock up got made that wasn't sorted at launch. Jobs reply was better than the normal Apple no response, but was pretty stupid all the same.

I have had no real troubles in use with mine yet, so the problem does not affect me personally in every day use.

I have ordered a case though (although some say that wont stop it), but I was going to anyway, as I never treat my phones well, and have found a gorgeous case, although waiting time will be about a month, but worth it.

Would you like me to get you a knife and fork and some humble pie now?

Nope, still confident it will be addressed in the software update. On the optimist inside me (Being Steve Jobs Jr.) thinks that the bull plop press release is a cover up for the bodge, and a firmware will sort it. Might be wrong, but if it still drops out signal then it will be stupid, as it will show no service for a hello of a lot of people almost all the time.

I still believe in Steve!

ordinarily id say that the nice little PR guff from apple is pure BS...

however...

On my 3g i have 2 or 3 bars in the house, the wife and daughter, both on 02 also but with different phones dont have the same signal strength. I can only make calls by the door or in the kitchen, even though it says I have a signal, so they could indeed be correct, they could be using a ****poor algorythm to calculate the signal strength. When the fix arrives (and it should arrive on all iphone?) Ill know for sure..

either that or they will have a fix that tells them short circuit = show 2 bars!

I can confirm that a "skin" from the likes of BestSkinsEver.com does not resolve the issue. I even tried a spare iPad skin I had and totally wrapped the device. Even allowing for some drying time (I deliberately left the contact point with the two antenna plates dry as well), putting my hand over the area still takes signal from 3bars to no signal.

I'm now left with having to either a) buy a case or b) see what O2 comes up with.

Or c) consider a different phone.

I just upgraded to the iphone4 too and found that if I leave 3G it keeps dropping the signal but if I switch it off, its ok..
Would you go back to O2 and swap the iphone for another which will more than likely have the same issue or stick with this one? I upgraded from the BB curve which I loved but I wanted the iphone4 as I have a macbook pro and wanted something to store photos on as well..don't like the HTC etc

Worth waiting for the update Chris. Might solve it, might now, but will still fall in the 30 day period for you, so gives it a fighting chance.

might solve it?

you seemed so sure before, like it was a non issue, are you having doubts?

It's 14 days so Thursday is the cut off. Judging by apples press release I'm convinced that the update will not resolve the issue. If o2 give me a bumper or a case for free, that'll do for me I think. Otherwise I'll probably just sell it.

To me personally it is a non issue, I have not dropped any calls or texts etc. while using it I know Chris has problems with it. I am sure it will be solved by firmware. I still have a hunch that the problem with the signal is the real thing with this firmware and Apple don't want to publicly admit it.

I stand firm that it will be corrected and become a non issue!

Apple have said 30 days you can return the phone haven't they?

D day approaches tomorrow. I've just been to an o2 store. They won't give me a physical solution. I've been onto o2 customer services. They also won't offer any solution other than returning the phone. I've been on the phone to Apple who refuse to accept there is an issue at all. I didn't want the stupid bumper but I can't get anyone to take responsibility and offer me even that.

So I'm left with
- keeping the phone and swallowing the £25 bumper. My stubbornness won't let me do that.
- returning the phone in a vain attempt to show my displeasure.
- sell the phone and buy a 3GS instead and pocket a few hundred quid.

I'm really annoyed that Apple aren't taking responsibility and offering the bumpers. I'm so hacked off that I'm not sure if I want Apple products in my life anymore. It is an outrage how they are (not) handling this.

</rant>
Sorry about that. :D

Which one of option 2 and 3 will make you the most money? Go with that... :p

apparently in a bbc interview with steve jobs he classed it as "very cool engineering"

That was in the official unveiling of the iPhone 4 during the same presentation Steve also held the phone in the way that he is now telling people is wrong, the man is making himself look like a dufus with this one. I love the we are over reporting the signal stregth explanation, reporting the strength lower is not going to help all the people that drop from 3g to edge if they hold the iphone in a normal manner!

Just looking on another forum I frequent (yeah I know there was some bad blood between TP and OcUK, don't shoot me! :p) and this poll was interesting...
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18157861

60% of people reported signal problems, with only 30% of the new phones actually having no problems at all...

That is shocking!

So is anyone enjoying their new enlarged signal bars which now appear correctly (and obviously fix the signal strength issue that was never there but was) with version 4.0.1?

I'm actually a bit puzzled. After updating, I thought I'd test transmission while bridging the two antennae. Previously if I touched that black line, bottom left, you wouldn't be able to hear me talk. But now, you can. Volume at the other end does drop slightly, but I can still be heard.... So did I test it the same way before??? I think I did.

I can still turn my signal bars into a 'searching' though, by holding the phone in a way which could be described as normal (aka the death grip).

Apple press conference tomorrow (16th). The Independent reckon they won't do a recall because it isn't a health or a safety matter, and that free bumpers may be the way they go.

It's a tough road ahead for Apple, whatever they do.
