Hi,

I have a white 32gb iPhone 3GS which I have for around 5 months, about a month ago I purchased a dock for the phone. Last week I noticed a hairline crack in the charging dock which has got wider and longer in length over the last week. I would not be to bothered if it was the cracks that appear around the headphone port that are only minor but this is around a 1cm in length and is getting worse.

As well as the crack near the dock the sponge is also becoming "spongy" in the top right hand corner and clicks when I press it lightly like its popping back into place

I believe the handset should be replaced but I am not sure wether to take it to the genius bar or not as I live over 60 miles away (UK) and I dont want a wasted journey,

Would the genius bar replace the handset? Has anyone experienced these problems?

Thanks

Grant

Mine cracked by the silent switch - Apple replaced at genius bar straight away.
If I were you though I would try o2 first...Tell them that they are stress fractures.

EDIT: are you talking about the phone which has cracks or your actual dock?

Yep - in that case I would give o2 a call. As long as there is no evidence of it being dropped etc I would think they would sort it.

here is a picture of the crack

This has happened to all my friends- who contacted o2/apple with various results. Some had their phones replaced, others told they were "outside warranty".

Mine is definitely inside warranty, only had it a few months

I dont think you will have a problem with o2 because it is affecting the phone itself with the clicking.

One of my friends had that problem- took it in, no problem- got a "refub", warranty is only 3 months on them. Took it back 4 months later, same problem- they wouldn't fix it, said it would cost £169 for another refub. At which point he walked out and got a HTC hero.

You should be fine if you have only had it 5 months- just wanted to point out that its a regular failure.

I wouldnt be to bothered if it was one of the cracks that appears around the mute switch or headphone port but every time I plug this into charge it gets worse

Thankfully not had this with my 3GS but my girlfriends 3G was exchanged 3 times for cracking case by Apple. Make an appointment with a genius, they will check it, ask a few questions about "cases and how you carry the phone"

My 3G got it pretty bad but was out of warranty so did a rear case swap myself (rather large crack in rear case)

Hopefully this issue gets resolved in the new 4G version due for release this year. Could be as soon as April 2010

I agree take it back to O2 I worked for a phone company and we got masses of iPhones back with "Stress fractures" we replaced via O2 warranty with no issues.

damn wish i never read this
just looked at mine which has a rear cover on it and it has a small crack near the mute switch
how long is the original warranty 12 months

Had the 3G since i came out 18 months ago. Its never had a case and gets dropped and thrown about and gets used a lot. Not one sign of cracks, just a few battle scars.

This is the first I've seen it despite knowing a few people with the same phone. Odd.

i have just had a google and loads of people have exchanged them
just dont fancy swapping my 5 month old 3gs for a refurb with only 3 months warranty
unless they extend the warranty on the refurb to 7 months

OK, I took mine to the Apple Store today. I booked with a Genius, showed him the crack. He did an inspection (checked for water damage and general condition) and asked how I carried it.

They replaced it with what looks to me like a brand new one. I looked up the serial number and that indicates it was manufactured in week 1 of 2010, which would fit in with that.

You keep the warranty (12 months) from the original date of purchase (he mentioned something about if you have less than 30 day left then you get 30 days, can't remember the exact duration).

Yeah something like that

I guess they are checking that you haven't caused the damage yourself. He asked me if I carried it in my back pocket (I don't).

quick update on this, took it to an apple store last weekend after making an appointment with the genius bar, they swapped it straight away

Glad they sorted it with no problems. Mine has very small cracks between the screws and silver rim on both sides. Been there since about week one and never really caused me any concern.
