There, I said it.
Fashions come, and fashions go.
Take mobile phones for instance. Firstly, we had those great big "bricks" with Pluto dog tails. Then we got smaller and smaller, until the Nokia 3310. But now we have the gigantic Samsung Galaxy "S-whirlingblackhole" monstrosities to try to fit into our pockets.
Remember back in the 90s? Big Hair Dos? Remember back in the Eighties? Big Shoulder Paddings?
Surely, surely, in years to come, we will laugh about the inept amateur togs who stood about in the 2010's holding up ipads with massive screens, (with those triangular screen protector things dangling below) trying to take artistic photos on the miniscule sized but mega pixelated cameras?
Relying on Instacrap and Twitcher to automagically place a sunset behind Big Ben even though they're stood next to Winston in Parliament Square????
 
In Amsterdam and Paris you don't have to look to see someone with an ipad taking a snap. It looked horrendous and stupid - at least they have got a decent viewfinder for a change. I am yet to see that in the smaller places like Bristol
 
And here l lies the problem, judgemental people, if the person taking the photo is happy doing it with an ipad or what ever, then they are happy and no one else should judge them. There are an awful lot of people who just pics of the kids, holidays or days out and don't give 2monkeys about composition depth of field and everything else.
 
Agree with the op it is odd looking but each to their own. What I find even more puzzling is when they finish taking iPad pictures and then pull out an iPhone 5 to make a call!

You can still get a 3310 from Ebay if you don't want to change.

I haven't used an iPad for taking pictures but because of the big screen it makes it useful for adding various effects and some of them are actually not bad.

Do we laugh at all the shots taken in the 60's and 70's on crappy cheap film cameras? No, didn't think so.

For most people, the photographs are the memories to look back on and having a low depth of field or ultimate sharpness is really not relevant. An iPad is just the mechanism they choose to use on that occasion.

As for whether they are artistic, that is subjective, but some of those iPad shots could be more artistic than any of the shots you have taken with a DSLR...
 
The biggest problem with tablet (that includes iPad as well as other stupid 5 inch plus devices) photography is the fact it is held at arm's length, obstructing everyone else's view.

Events not allowing big lenses into the stadium, but allows the even worse offender: tablets. That doesn't make any sense!
 
My phone is a Galaxy note :(

On a serious note, the phone wasn't bought for the camera, being a ltd company and travelling to take photos means I needed a decent Sat Nav - the Galaxy note is a gem for it, I buy big for a reason :)
But yes, there will always be people who capture the moment and not the art form, but we shouldn't moan at them. They're just happy to have normal photos in an album to look at while 'us lot' over on TP are out to add that extra bit of panache and jazz!

Still waiting to shoot a wedding with these iFad guests though ;)

Agreed.

And how those ipad tog laugh at you with your muti thousand pound kit taking the same holiday snap as them.
 
My brother recently took a holiday on the south coast, he posted an iPhone Instagrammed photo of the nearby beach from his hotel room, with the comment "would love to wake up to this every morning".

I posted back "only if instagram start making windows" :D

Phones haven't become bigger due to "fashion". It's because "phones" these days are serious multimedia devices. When phones were getting smaller, small was desirable because it made the phones more convenient while impacting negligibly on function. At that stage the multimedia capabilities of phones were primitive.
Now, with powerful mobile internet and relatively huge processing power, phones are used for viewing movies, detailed websites, GPS maps, etc. Making larger screens desirable for practical reasons, not aesthetic whim.

Although there's still a percentage out there that buy on inches because of a lack somewhere else!
I've met soo many idiots that bought a phone just because it had a large screen without no true knowledge of the spec and how the UI handles etc!
The same goes for Apple fanboyism - although I own a 27'' iMac, I don't broadcast about it or trade it in for the latest model that has the same architecture but the screen has 100 extra lux of brightness etc just because I want to keep up with the iFad :)

Each to their own :) let's keep to our fancy SLR's and keep up with producing amazing images ;)

I'm afraid from here that post looks a bit too much like 'They're all a bit strange except thee and me. And I'm not too sure about thee!'

Do you really believe that a vast number of people buy big stuff just because they have little willies?:p

Speaking as someone who's owned big cars, little cars, big cameras, little cameras etc. I thought it was because I bought what I needed to do the job - not because my winkie kept changing size:cuckoo:
 
Lacking the ability to change size is another issue all together...

He didn't say a vast number. Just a percentage.

Nor did he clarify what was lacking somewhere else. Could be nobsize, could be intelligence, could be self worth for all we know.

Lets face it though, there are folk out there who buy things purely based on what it will make others think. I suspect it is people like this that are being referred to.

Yes, they are people who are insecure. Are all iPad photographers insecure? maybe, maybe not but still don't see a problem with them using an iPad as a camera.

This topic just reads like a bitter rant not wanting people to enjoy taking photos however they choose to/not fitting with how "it should be done"
 
I have no problem with people using phones or tablets to take photos, but I had a problem last year at the Olympics with the proliferation of people in front of me in the audience holding iPads above their heads to record events, but actually blocking my view.

Conclusion? I think you are reading too much into an off the cuff comment there.
 
I always laugh to myself when someone moans about iPad or mobile photography. End of the day it's none of anybody's business how others take their photos. Too many people on high horses.
 
Use ANYTHING to take a photo of ANYTHING. Or not. If it makes you happy then you're doing it right.

Way too much judgement around - surely an interest in photography, by any means is a good thing to see?
 
I can understand the annoyance of some arse holding a big slab thing up in front of others, but is that not the same annoyance as some other arse with a big lens blocking a view? If someones unreasonably blocking a view ask them kindly to move, not hard. End of the day, mobile/tablet photography is just another type of... you know.... photography.

There's a lot of snobbery I find in photography, some laugh at others for using a mobile device, some laugh at those using entry level kit, some laugh at those still using film ex etc etc. live and let live ffs.

I have no problem at all with anyone taking photos with whatever device they want, but.. I went to the zoo at the weekend was amazed to see people standing miles back from the tiger enclosure waving their iPads about. I get that if you're in an environment where you have your iPad on you, you might use it to take a picture, but would you really choose it as your camera of choice to lug around the zoo?

Funnily enough the zoo was where I saw someone walking round taking photo's with their ipad. Fair enough, it doesn't affect me and I couldn't see any reason to be bothered about it but I did find it strange they'd opted to use it in preference to something else. I suppose that's just me assuming they have an alternative. Personally I don't find the prospect of waving my ipad about in public taking photo's very appealing.
 
I have an ipad mini, an iphone and my dslr. Only one get used for pics - but that's me. I don't frown on others using their phones or pads to take snaps, because, mostly, that's all they're doing. And what harm? I remember thinking it looked silly the first time I spotted someone taking pic's with a full sized ipad - that was a few years back, these things just become the norm over time.
