Ipads overhyped or not ??

Had ours a year now, bought for quick browsing.
Been spot in for what we got it for. Would get another.

Have a Windows base laptop which is only used for photos (to be replaced early next year its ancient).

Both have their purposes, love the portable of the ipad, speed...just 'works'. No auto updates, magic paperclips or any of that 'where do you want to go today' nonsense that I personally hate with Windows. Switch on and browse.

Some great great apps (free, quick to install/remove, just hassle free) for the kids, portability, sitting around is great compared with sitting at a desk. Might not seem a big difference, but it can be - for us, again, everyones different and will set up environments differently, but works in our house.

My parents taught me to read as well, and its not a replacement, just another tool to be used....serves a purpose well imo.

Nod - USB? That is so 00s. Lol

I own 1 USB stick and hardly use it. Most files are transferred via dropbox/skydive. It does help to have an iPad with a sim card.

The iPad has a lot going for it. They are not for doing something full on, but great for getting things done when out and about or sitting on the sofa.

**Mod Edit**
Unwarrented

If you want USB and all that rubbish just buy a laptop. Just a browsing machine my left nut! I've not had to boot up my desktop since I bought my iPad 3, and yes, that includes processing raw files...

A netbook is far more portable than a full sized laptop and I have one (of each!). I need to be able to connect a few devices at a time to the machine (it has an SD reader built in but my SLRs use CF so require an external reader) - the card reader, a mouse, a printer and/or external optical or HD drives. I know the optional and not cheap connection kit for the iPad provides A USB port but 3 or more? Also, surely if USB was rubbish, Apple wouldn't have ports on any of its products?

Neil, so did I but some seem to be playing truant.

Jim, she is neither. And, since she is not a member here, I find your personal attack on her rather distasteful. RTM, I think. Sorry, Jim - it's Dale I shall be RTMing.

I was reading this week about a project that dropped off a load of tablets into an African village. No instructions. In a short time the children had taught themselves how to read and some had worked out how to hack the tablets! Seemed to lead to quicker results than normal education. Think they should try it in stoke to see if the residents can finally grasp the difference between lend and borrow :)

Tablets are just tools. They do some things well and other things badly. Desktops do everything except portability.

Touch typing on a tablet is a b****r though.

Thank you, Chris.

I have an ipad and its a good piece of kit until you need a flash player :-s

I thought those wix sites or whatever they're called still were? Most things with flash seem to be ads. I turned flash off in ff so I usually see what I'm missing. It isn't that much. Usually annoying menus.

One of those automated site creation things. Looks like wix isn't one that is flash only but I think one or two used to be.

Apologies, my remark was purely tongue in cheek, no offence intended...

Thanks for the apology, Jim.

As you can see, Dale's comment got editted to remove the offensive comment - glad there was no further sanction on him (or yourself).

As my signature says, any opinions I voice are purely my own and others are fully entitled to theirs - we didn't like or get on with HER iPad2 but fully accept that others do. For my needs, my netbook is far better and runs software and uses hardware I already have!
