Ipad3 event (New Apple stuff)

you mean you're not going to feed yourself?

The only person trolling here is you as pointed out many times above. Why come into a thread about a device you have no interest in? It's not like this was a generic thread about tablets - we're talking ipad here and you dont like ipad - so why the hell are you wasting your time in here if it's not just to flame and claim superiority because of your flac lossles blah blah blah open system jargon?

Arrogance, thinks that he knows better than us. Problem is that he can't get this head round the fact that most of us aren't stupid, we all can get another tablet and run all these lossless format if we want to. We just chose not to.

I've been a windows user at home for all my life up until 3 years ago, still use windows at work today. I'm comfortable with all the platforms, I can built a PC from parts, I just chooses use mac at home because it is better for me. You like your PC, fine, you don't see me come to your house to rant about apple stuff for 2 days do you?

Because that's what arad85 is doing here.

I think tht's the key point and why we become defensive arad. If this were a thread asking "What tablet is best" or "What streaming tv box is best" etc then it would be different.

But it just reeks of trollism to come into a thread of a product you don't want or have any interest in just to flame.

It would be like me joing RobertP's thread about his pc he is building and saying "Why you doing that, thats rubbish, you should do this"

OK. One last go.

Why come into a thread about a device you have no interest in?
I DO have an interest in it. I personally don't see a need for it in my life, but that doesn't mean I'm not interested in it as a piece of technology.

we're talking ipad here and you dont like ipad
No. The device itself is very nice and the specs of the new one look very nice too. I haven't done a personal head-to-head of tablets recently, but it's one of the best, if not the best tablets out there for most people. I don't like the closed system Apple have and I question their business practices.

so why the hell are you wasting your time in here if it's not just to flame and claim superiority because of your flac lossles blah blah blah open system jargon?
Who is claiming superiority? All I want is something I can play anything on. In the way I deem fit. Using the software I deem suitable. xbmc for iOS on iPad would probably do, except I don't need yet another output device now.

You asked a question about why people would need different formats, I tell you and now I'm getting accused of claiming superiority? Yet all you can do is make derogatory comments about my posts? Come on Joe, lighten up and see it from someone elses viewpoint for a change....

Call it pay back then for every 'Windoze' comment and every smug 'Get a Mac' post on threads asking for PC advice- mostly from those who haven't a clue what they're talking about.

There does seem to be a rather annoying evangelical approach from some apple devotees.

Personally I'm dual platform & don't give two figs.

Really? Please find a post where I've said it's not good?

But at least you and Joe are talking to each other and referring to me in the third party - so we must be getting somewhere - right? ;)

How is this talking about you in the third party

I think tht's the key point and why we become defensive arad.

im talking directly to you.

but what the hell, lets all lighten up the sun is shining today !

ALAC for example.
Which is a choice, it is not forced upon anyone? They don't sell music in it. It is not even a default settings, but yes if you really must you could choose it. They are not unique in that sense, many manufacturers have had those. ATRAC anyone? In specialist environment there is most definitely a place for those methods of encoding, in your home consumer environment you do not have to choose that. I am confused why you pick that audio one?

It's like buying a Lotus Elise.

I know damn well it only has 2 doors, no radio, air bags, drinks like a fish, no room for golf clubs and don't even bother if you live in an area full of speed bumps. I would buy one knowing all those limitations and more but I would still buy one because it is god damn pretty.

If I want something that has 4 door, big boot, does 80mpg, loads of gadgets and enough air bags to make it float into space then then I would buy a Prius.

I don't, it's not like I don't know there are other options out there, i just choose not to.

It's that simple.

Actually my wife has a Prius III T-Spirit and flipping heck you really do not want that for speed bumps. Give me the Lotus anyway for that :D

Here's the thing that really winds me up. The suggestion that someone buying an iPad is a 'sheep', that you're technically ignorant and have no idea what you're doing beyond the obvious choice.

It's never that maybe, just maybe, some people are none of those things and it's simply the product they've chosen. Why it's not the right choice for someone else is of no consequence.

so i come back and find arguing still going on.

Arad, i was reading the thread and pulled you up, no-one needed to report it.

I am confused why you pick that audio one?
Because it is the one I am most familiar with.

The fundamental problem for me is that the Apple ecosystem has a limited subset of video and audio codec support. They don't support the ones that are important to me, and any purchasing decisions I make are based around that fact. If they did just slot into the system I have here, I may well own one or more of their products.

I bought my 64gb in November last year, for something I once discarded as a gadget it quickly became a big part of my life bringing social and work together in one place.

I'm not seeing that much to make me want to change. The retina screen is nice but I'm not sure I need that ultimate clarity on my mobile portfolio.

Seriously thinking of ditching my netbook and getting an iPad3.

Just a wee bit worried about lack of connectivity and everything going through iTunes.

I don't understand all the techie stuff (and don't want to). All I know is I love my iPad2 which I've had about 5 months and use all the time. All I would like to know - what's the main benefits of upgrading to number 3?

I use the one I have to use the web, show clients my work (the main reason for getting one), listen to a small selection of tunes (it's only 16gb) and watch tutorials from Kelby traing. And for all that it seems perfect....

im not sure there is a huge desire for ipad2 users to upgrade, although if you are showing to customers then maybe the retina screen might be worthwhile?

Depends where you are coming from.

If you are coming from iPad 1 then there are a few things to tempt you.

1 - Screen

Going from SVGA (1024 x 800) to higher than HD, this is going to be amazing on paper. however the old (existing?) screen is never a bad one in the first place. In fact it is one of the best out there, IPS screen with amazing viewing angles, good blacks, good contrast and really clear. But I am going to reserve judgment until I see it in person. I have an iPhone 4 but i will wait until I have the new iPad side by side with the old one before maknig comments on how much better it is. Apple claims it has 40% better contrast as well. We will see.

That said, it should be a marked improvement. I remember putting the old iPhone to the iPhone 4 screen, the difference is remarkable when seen in person side by side.

The possible down side of this, which I don't think people has mentioned is the extra storage needed. 4 times the pixels means any photos I load in now I will need to put them in a larger file, I also have (ideally) to rip any movies in a higher res to take advantage of the higher res. Apps too will start to take advantage of the higher res so it is possible they will also be larger as a result. So this time round I went for the 64G version, my last one was 32G and I filled it to 80%. I was kind of hoping they remove the 16G and made the 32G the bottom with 128G the top spec but keeping the same price structure. It was not meant to be, may be next year?

2 - Speed

The biggest limitation in iPad 1 is the lack of RAM:- 256mb, and according to people who know things better than me, since the release of iOS5, whenever an app tries to access/allocate something to RAM that it doesn't have, it crashes the app and dumps you back on the Home screen. In actual usage it means loading a large webpage, anything from image heavy to sites with embedded videos (it does play them you know, like youtube), it will crash it. Therefore the jump to iPad 3 with the increase speed fromt he A5x chip and the increase in RAM helps this massively.

3 - Camera

Well, from iPad 1 you are going from no camera to 2 cameras. From iPad 2 you are going from camera to much better camera. To be honest I don't care, i have an iPhone that I use to take photos with if i need to when without my SLR so this doesn't bother me. It might tempt others however.

Going from iPad 2 however things are not as clear cut. Unless you really need the better screen then I personally would skip this one. Same with speed, for now, iPad 2 can handle the current iOS5 (as can iPad 1 did with iOS 4), however, when the next one comes out, iPad 2 will struggle. So whether you want to future proof yourself in that respect with iPad 3 is up to you, persnonally I don't see a new iOS coming this year.

Ifor something I once discarded as a gadget it quickly became a big part of my life bringing social and work together in one place

I got daggers and a sour face when she opened it at Christmas. Now I need a pair of pliers to prise it from her hands followed up with a bribe of some form if I ever want to use it. It's definitely one of those items which quickly goes from gadget to essential tool!

Which is basically a higher-res screen, right?

(that was to Joe)

But cheers Raymond

I agree, nice upgrade for iPad 1 owners. The screen alone (with updated associated graphics processor) would make me update the iPad 2. I think skipping a generation is quite possible without feeling left behind.

Ah well that explains why safari just closes on me - especially in TP funnily enough...

Shouldn't do, safari works well within the normal limits. Besides no app should just crash, that is lazy programming. But even more so, why not use the iOS app for the TP it is free :)

TP is particularly bad for crashing safari. My iPhone 4 has the same A4 chip but 512Ram and it does not suffer from the same quirks as the iPad, they are running the same OS so it's the Ram, or lack of it that is the culprit.

pretty much.

I personally always skip a generation with the apple mobile devices and I usually do it in 3's

so ipad1 to ipad 3 i'll skip 4 and buy 5

Me too but I wish they start out with 2 as I have a irrational dislike for odd numbers :shake:

Ditto, same with iPhone, although I went from 1 to 4, skipping 3 and 3GS in the process...that jump was HUGE!

Skipping a generation (selling the old one) is the most economical and sensible way. Make Apple's refresh cycle work for you, not be a slave to it.

The same with iMac, mine is 3 years old now and the current design should get a refresh this year. I'll struggle on for a few more months.

I have an interest in the iPad 3 for my best mate. But I'm afraid to comment incase I offend anyone. I dare not say it.

P.S. My Willy is bigger than your Willy.

Get some fun back to the board!

Ah well that explains why safari just closes on me - especially in TP funnily enough...

There was a bug in iPad ios 5.01 which caused the crash/close with certain forum software (it also happened with iPad 2, even with the extra ram). Supposedly ios 5.1 fixes it (and it seems so, hasn't crashed on me since updating yesterday).

Apple closes security holes with iOS 5.1 and iTunes update

Alongside the launch of the "new iPad", Apple released iOS 5.1 for the iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S, the 3rd generation iPod touch, and iPad and iPad*2. The update includes fixes for 91 issues with CVE identifiers. The majority, 66 of the issues, are described as "unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution" in WebKit due to memory corruption.

anyway going back to my pricing question earlier, i make that £100 more for the ipad3 in the same type (wifi 32gb). not worth it for me personally.

Price seems to be same as the iPad 2 was until yesterday, (iPad 2 has been discounted as of yesterday). For eg iPad 2 32GB wifi was £479, iPad 3 32GB wifi is now £479.

I'm sure it isn't that bad, more like a stuck record, it is known by now...

[Tongue in cheek]

Marketing
The iPad 3 has got to have a Retina Display

Engineering
But we'll need 4x the processing power just to push the extra pixels around :help:

Marketing
Excellent ! that will look even better on the adverts, we'll sell loads

Engineering
But it won't be any faster and it'll need a thicker, heavier battery :(

Marketing
It doesn't matter, they'll still queue up to buy it

after all it's ....
