just a quick question, i am in position to go buy an ipad sometime over the next few days to show future clients my work.

thinking ipad wifi only the 16gb version

Just wondering if any TPers who are in the know, is the new ipad really worth £70 extra over the 2nd generation i have done my research and do know about the few difference between 2 & 3 i am just being tight and thinking i could save a few ££££ here which i could then spend on accessories.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this matter

For Photographers the iPad 2 isn't even worth considering, the far higher resolution screen which is also more colour accurate looks beautiful to show photos on, and personally is only second to an actual print.

I use an iPad 2 and it's the most usefull thing I've bought in ages , good for showing photos to prospective clients , good for model release forms , taking notes on location , lighting diagrams , posing guides and reference material on the go

I have an iPad 2 and I'm the sort of person who:

A - Will spend ages making the decision what to buy, trying all options
B - Is in no way an Apple 'fanboy'

It's a fabulous device, just fabulous. At the current £330 it's a steal, and it's one of those things that the more you use it, the more you're glad you bought it.

Believe me, I wanted to like the Samsung, or the Sony, or the HP more...but they didn't come close in terms of design or desirability.

The main difference for photographers between the iPad 2 and 3 is the screen resolution. Apple have massively hyped up the retina display of the iPad 3 and the fact that you can’t see the individual pixels on the screen but I have an iPad2 and have absolutely no complaints what so ever about the screen quality. If you look really really closely then yes you can see the pixels but no one looking at your photos is ever going to look that close at the screen.

I have done a side by side comparison of the same photo on an ipad 2 screen and a 3 screen and at normal viewing distance (i.e. arms length) you honestly can’t tell the difference.

If you are considering something more then the iPad 2 wifi 16Gb then go for a 32Gb version. I have a 16Gb and the only thing I’d want is a bit more storage space on it.

the screen is clearer on the 3. the whole tablet is a mm or so thicker also.

however to say the 2 screen makes it not worth considering isnt entirely true. it still makes a good portfolio to show clients.

I upgraded my iPad1 to the new iPad and at first I was wondering whether the difference in screen resolution was really all that big a deal. Then I started looking at high resolution photos on both and the difference was literally clear to see.

For example, the following photo which has a lot of very fine detail looks amazing on the new iPad, but looks murky in comparison on the iPad1.

Not the best test in the world, but in way of comparison, I photographed both screens displaying the same photo.

It's the same with other photos with similarly high levels of fine detail.

Photos on the non-Retina iPads look great. Photos on the Retina iPad look wow!

Small font sizes are also easier to read. This became apparent when I revisited websites and found I didn't need to double-tap or magnify the view at all.

Of course, not everyone will reap the benefits of a higher resolution screen, but it's an option.

The screen and the graphics processor speed are the two signifiant differences, the latter being needed because of the former.

I was perfectly happy with my original iPad screen until I upgraded (which I did because the processor in the original iPad is lacking in my opinion since iOS 5 was released).

I worked on the basis that I got two years out of the original iPad before the iOS and apps started to demand more processing power than it really had. If I bought an iPad 2, as it's already 'one year old tech', I'd only get another year, but for the £70 extra and the iPad 3 (or new iPad as they prefer), I'd get two whole years, so I plumped for the latter. Not a very scientific approach, but it made some sence in my muddled head.

I have to say though that when I go back and look at the old iPad having worked on the new one, the old screen looks really poor (which it isn't really).

I got an Ipad2 early in the New Year and have been very impressed with it for showing photos. I can take photos at events and download them immediately to view. Its very portable and fits neatly into my camera bag. The photos look great on it until you start to look very closely and then realise that they are not as sharp as they could be.....that said, you have to be a photographer to realise this as nobody else I know has commented on it. I got the 64mb wifi only.

However, if I had realised that the Ipad3 was just about to be released, I would have waited. It makes sense to go for the newer tech and better screen. 64mb also makes more sense if you can stretch to it.

So go for Ipad3.

Picked up a new ipad in HK last month and blown away by the screen quality. 90% of the time its used just as a web browser.

Also found quite a niche for it when showing relatives photos! In a similar vein I have a friend who shoots weddings and he gives the bridge/groom previews on his iPad, and most people love it, some even buy an iPad because of it!

I'm no Apple fan boy but they really scored with the screen on the v.3.

Cheers folk just bought iPad 3 and it's brilliant mum works for a supermarket so saved £40 off rrp

I'm really impressed with my ice cream sandwich tablet.

Why only ipad? I have not seen the new ipad screen, but it's 'double pixels' shenanigans is something I would prefer to avoid. See here: http://globalmoxie.com/blog/new-ipad-image-sizes.shtml

Really?? Lol!

I upgraded to the iPad 3 and the screen is a thing of beauty!! It's by far the most stunning looking screen I have EVER used. It's so clear, sharp and the colours are perfect.

That (pre release) report concludes there will be download speed issues due to the higher res, what a load of rubbish! My download speeds for apps / web are instant on 3G let alone wi-fi, and full HD streams effortlessly.

Quite simply, it's stunning.
