Yes
thinking of buying an ipad3 for my missus for an anniversary present...she watch's lots of stuff on catch up on one of the laptops...will she be able to do this on the ipad, i know there is issues with flash on ipads and this got me thinking

il no doubt end up using it to show pics off.....might aswell kill 2 birds with 1 stone :lol::lol::lol:

It is nice for showing pics. I also use it to read the sd memory card from my camera so I can preview the pictures before I get home. Should be even nicer with the better screen the ipad3 has.

The major players, bbc, itv etc all have ipad apps so as long as you use those you should be fine.

I use my iPad to catch up on TV. I sometimes have problems depending where I am in the house with getting a signal good enough for streaming.

Depends how strong the signal coming from your internet hub is, but that's a problem with the hub itself rather than the iPad. The simplicity of it is beautiful.

Catching up TV is infinitely easier than on a laptop.

Download all your channel apps, Sky has a pretty good one, you can even link it to your sky HD + box if you have one. If not, each TV station (BBC1 through to CH5) then just open app and click on program to watch.

if you have sky, then sky go is awesome on the ipad, you can watch the movies, sports, anytime and also sky atlantic

CatchUp TV also have an iPad specific app for their channels (almost all the free view channels) which works well.

There probably isn't another platform so well catered for when it comes to streaming TV.

Yes, they are all there, all free apps too.

iPlayer also streams live on the iPad.

I guess you either 'get' the iPad or you don't.

We've had a 2 since xmas and don't really get it. It spends a lot of the time turned off. it does get picked up fairly often but soon put down again too.

I finally found an app that can act as a controller sending music from a server to my amp and do a good job of it. There are plenty of apps that are supposed to do it but most either can't, or do it badly with huge pauses between tracks or just crashing. The iPad makes a good library browsing device for selecting what to play so as a large remote control it maybe earns its keep.

I keep thinking we are going to find other uses for the iPad that will make it seem as indispensable to us as these things seem to be to everyone else, but it's not happened yet.

Interesting.

So you are sat watching the telly and something comes into your mind that you want to check on the Internet. You don't reach for your iPad to do it?

I think that's why I didn't "get" the tablet I had and sold it on. I just walk to the office and use a keyboard and a 4k x 1.2k screen.

I can see why people would use one as you suggest though and why it would be a killer app for some.

.

How many people do you know with an office off the lounge who also have computer equipment in that office switched on 24/7?

Seems a bit like overkill when all you want to do is read up a bit more on a story that's just been on the news...

Not many. But I wasn't complaining, just saying why I personally didn't "get" using a tablet. If I didn't have a computer on 24/7, I would probably think differently.

I also don't commute via public transport which would be another ideal place to use one.

Just saying - that's all....

I would love an iPad - I couldn't live without my iPhone as it is.

However in the world of the parent the teenager is king - so my eldest has one - but I have never even been allowed to look at it - never mind use it - while I am stuck with my phone (and laptop).

Slightly O/T...

It will be interesting to see how the current teenage generation treat their kids in 15 or so years time. I wonder if they will heap love and presents on their offspring or be grumpy and selfish with them as that's what they seem to be used to (using an oversized brush with that sweeping statement ;)).

And I speak as the father of an 18 and 20 year old...

I was always spoiled by my parents - so I have done the same for mine.

It didn't do me any harm.

But yes they are very spoiled as a generation - I have a few children - they get a lot more expensive as they grow up!!!!!

It was slightly tongue in cheek btw :)

Interesting.

No.

But then I rarely watch TV for more than an hour at a time so it's not too hard to remember to look later at the PC. If I don't remember then it couldn't have been that important.

So far there is nothing the iPad does that the PC or ereader doesn't do better - for my uses.

:
Not issues with flash. There just ain't any flash at all.
If you look at a lot of photographers websites on Ipad, you can't see half of it because they insist on using flash. They don't seem to realise that all the world doesn't view everything on a PC.
There are vast numbers of people who view the internet via Ipad and Iphone these days and they don't take that into account.
There are lots of alternative to Ipad these days and you should have a good look around first

Way of life I guess.

During the weekend I'm downstairs all day or out. If I'm downstairs then my computer is upstairs and I do all web surfing on the couch cos its comfort than my office, plus more sociable.

If my mac was within arms reach of my couch. I'd probably not use the iPad as much. It also comes in handy when I am cooking the Sunday roast and I can have it in the kitchen with music, news or sky sports on it.

I got to say the iPad is very handy, as others have said its easy to just jump on it to check something on the internet.

I hardly start my main PC up now, just press a botton, unlock and bingo. Also us it for The TV on demand services, streaming from TVCatchup and Lovefilm. Have hooked it up to HDMI input on my surround sound, so any app that supports the HDMI out is fed via my surround sound system to the TV.

I also use it to control my HTPC as a mouse and trackpad, saves having a wireless keyboard and mouse. Plus TP forum, the bay, amazon, skype, email and online banking make it a handy gadget to have.

One time it was priceless. A meeting at VMware dragged on and on when holland was playing brazil. Listening to radio five live and hearing those goals wasn't good enough. So I pulled over, switched on the catchup tv app and was watching Hollands fantastic match right there via 3G :)

I also love it to carry big (10K plus pages) contracts with me, see a full page of a4 at a time and easily search in a meeting. I find it so rude to see these laptop screens hiding the people behind them.

Also great to review documents whilst on a plane. Annotate them with comments and send them straight back again. And again a full page of a4 in view including all graphics.
