someone else mentioned sky plus before. I think that comes in again here. There are other vendors that do TV, like NTL and virgin but have you ever used them? They suck. Sky have the best menu navigation system and the easiest product, it's a breeze to use. The other pail in comparison.

Sure there are other mp3 and mp4 players that are cheaper and maybe have more features, but in general they just aren't as nice to use as ipods. The menu systems, the little nuances that make ipods and iphone so great are missing from these other devices, thats what you pay for when you buy an apple mobile device

Actually I know a few people that use the Virgin system and it's a piece of cake.

The big word there you used was "general", yeah obviously there are worse players out there (and the iPod is a pretty good player) but there are some pretty good ones too, easily as good as the iPod, yet they don't sell as many.. For example one off the top of my head, my Sony player has a thing called "senseme" which analyses all of the music as it's put on the player and sticks it into categorys (rock, classical, morning, energetic etc, etc...), there is nothing like that as far as I can tell on iPods. I use it extensively and a few friends have really liked it as well.

haha good luck with that...more like £499

Indeed! With Rip-off Britain they'll just change the $ sign to a £ sign.

Sometime back I had to be a book and it had the prices printed on the cover at the back...

$39.99

and

£39.99

My mum loves gettin' her TV through Virgin, but she gets confused using SkyHD at my sister's place.

I would've gone for Virgin here too (I'd rather have cablemodem than DSL) but no such luck. We have to go with a different cable provider where the TV interface is kind of awful. I'll probably end up getting SkyHD for the living room though. :)

it's called genius on ipods.

it's not about comparing feature to feature and pointing out what is and isn't there, it's the whole package. Nothing works perfectly as well as an ipod.

not sure if its been metioned but the iPad uses a completely new SIM format, presumably to lock people to certain providers?
The iPad is "unlocked" meaning it can be used on any network, but yeah, phone providers will have to provide this new type of SIM card to be able to keep up.

I've already pmmed kerso, I'm gonna see what price he can offer on a US import, no doubt it will be a fair amount lower than the uk price

I think that the price difference between this and a MacBook 13" is not worthy to get the iPad.Not mentioning the extras of a notebook.

They aren't designed to do the same thongs so that price comparison is not valid. It's like comparing a microwave and an oven. They both warm food but in very different circumstances you use one over the other.

Hmmm looks like a bigger iphone.

Not interested in the slightest, maybe if it was the same price as a netbook

Hmmm looks like a bigger iphone.
For the sake of accuracy, it's more like a giant ipod touch than a giant iphone, as it has no phone capabilities.

But, that's exactly what I want. I would've bought an ipod touch years ago if it had a bigger screen. Now I can get one. :)

Having just trawled through the whole 'entertaining' thread, a few observations.

People will pay more for the Apple gear than other brands whether the technology warrants it or not. Generally Apple do deliver on the tech and the user interface, or at least have unique selling point or two. I don't think the iPad has that.

I worked in John Lewis over a few Xmas', and when there was a shortage of iPods. I pointed out that there were better MP3 players available, but no, they only wanted iPods. :shrug: That was purely fashion.

I can sort of see the point of have the iPad for showing clients images, but how many of us need to do that?

Some people seem to be overlooking the flaws, and considering buying it because it is Apple, and they just want one. And I thought there was a recession?

The SkyPlus box. If you have Sky, then you have no alternative but to get to know how to work it. A friend has it, and I find the remote awful, and unless someone shows you what to do, then you have no chance. It seems they didn't want to re-design the remote.

I use a laptop for work occasionally, and for backing up and quick edits of pics, using the internet, and watching vids on holiday. The iPad wouldn't replace that. it's probably not designed to you say, but most of us want devices to do many things. Maybe it is not designed for me then. Well they have been showing it off to the wrong target audience. :shrug:

It will sell because it is Apple, but not in the amounts they expect imho.

No USB socket. :bonk: :lol:

Can those of you who are not impressed or think it is rubbish for your needs, not see the massive market for this device?

No. It lacks too many features. What I believe many people are looking for is to rationalise what they carry. I have a phone and a laptop - why would I buy this? It replaces neither.

Can those of you who are not impressed or think it is rubbish for your needs, not see the massive market for this device?

I said for me, it doesn't do what I want. For others- who knows. I am not sure there is a mass market, but hey- willing to admit I am wrong in 6 months. The iphone worked because everybody has a phone- and to pay a little more for something so "good" worked really well (especially for apple's profits). Not everybody needs this device, I think possibly lots of the general public won't see the benefit of spending £350+ on a device they never had the need for before. But, whatever happens, the fanboys are already queueing to buy it :)

It's a niche product that doesn't fit into your niche. But it's the same with AppleTV, for many people it's an expensive white box that was pointless, for me I use it every single day. I do a lot of video editing and it's the best way to watch HD video on my plasma. My wife also listens to a lot of music whilst playing with our daughter and this is on all day with the photo screensaver. So for me AppleTv really fits in my niche.

this pad will also fit in my niche. I work from home so although I have an iPhone I rarely use it outside of the house. I use it in the evenings when I am in my living room for internet browsing and watching lots of video (movies and TV) because I mainly hate most of the stuff my wife wants to watch on TV. I also watch something every night in bed.

For all of these uses this pad is going to be way better than my iphone because the screen is bigger, and way better than a laptop because it's easier to hold, thinner, lighter. In bed I can lay down and hold it etc.

so it really fits my niche! :thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

This is exactly the use for it.

I totally agree with everything you say, and if I had money to spare, I would almost certainly get one. It is perfect for lazing around, watching a few films, browsing The Guardian site, showing mates photographs, it's perfect.

Take it out of that environment and it's no where near as practical.

Mocked my friend, but only in a friendly way. :D How can simplicity be so bad? (especially when there is so much complexity hiding below the surface if you want it)

Also, Amp34 "LED backlit screens are only better in weight, size and power" only the three most important attributes you want in a mobile device.

I have to admit, I'd hoped the iPad would be more revolutionary but then again the iPhone doesn't look too much until you use it. Unfortunately for me though the iPad or any other tablet falls into the category of 'want' rather than 'need'.

There is such a thing as too much simplicity! :lol:

I just can't get on with it. Next time I use my girlfriend's iMac I'll take a mental note of things that annoy me about OSX. Or snow leopard or whatever the bloody hell it is :D

* No camera
* No multitasking
* No flash
* £100 extra for the 3G version
* 16GB storage for a laptop replacement?
* FPS gaming w/o a controller.
* eBooks on an LCD screen.

iPass

This Microsoft courier looks like a better device imo

Wow...
I would buy both. I'd buy an iPad for home use, and then for everything else, this. It is literally the perfect yin to the iPad's yang.

lol, iPass, I like that

i'd buy a microsoft tablet if I knew it wasn't going to crash and seize up every 5 minutes

Windows 7 hasn't crashed once since I installed it about a month ago.
The reason windows crashes is because its users are stupid and clog it up with crap. Windows is like a kitchen. Keep it clean, and you'll have a pleasure using it. Small, regular clean ups, tidy everything away properly, organise your pots and tins, wash the dishes and put them away. If you let the chaos and the mess and the dirt pile up, you'll hate it. It will be useless. You'll have to spend hours sorting it out, cleaning everything top to bottom, re-organising stuff, before it works properly again.

The difference is with Apple is that while, yes, the freedom to clog your machine up with crap is available, it's so bloody difficult to do so.
That is the only thing that Apple has over Microsoft. It's difficult to break.

I know exactly how Windows works and how to make it work at its prime - as I just described. A lot of people unfortunately don't and that's where this myth that Windows ALWAYS crashes came from.

agreed, they will both co-exist quite happily. Microsoft will continue to make products that fit well into buisness category and Apple will continue to make products that fit into the entertainment category. Apple will just grow and take share from microsoft in the entertainment and home use category but it won't take over the business space where microsoft will happily exist.

The education space however is a different place entirely where I think microsoft will lose share, not just to apple but to Linux. Schools are already getting fed up with paying so much money for operating systems they are looking elsewhere more and more. Ubuntu will gain more and more space in this field

I dunno... A similarly specced Mac will have a 33% premium to a Windows model...
I have no evidence to prove this other than that my computer is about 4 times faster than my girlfriend's brand new iMac, which cost her £1100.
Mine cost just under £600, screen and all.
Same goes for my Dad's laptop and my friend's brand new Macbook Pro (£1600 to £600).

Absolutely, the interface is superb on their portable products, you literally can't beat it no matter what you do.
Some manufacturers have given up trying.
No where near as many MP3 players now as there were (apart from cheapy crappy ones for people who can't afford a shuffle or a nano).

There is no recession in the consumer market as retail revenue is still steadily rising.

It will sell because it is Apple
Not my reasoning. The last apple device I owned was an Apple IIe. Man, that was a long time ago. ;)

I've always disliked macs, I thought the ipod touch was pretty awesome, but couldn't justify the cost for what was essentially an over the top mp3 player, the iphone doesn't fulfil any of my needs better than the Samsung Omnia running WinMo (except that the iphone costed 5 times as much at the time I was looking to buy, and personally I think the audio from my Omnia sounds better than the ipod touch or iphone anyway through my Sony bluetooth stereo headphones).

I worked in John Lewis over a few Xmas', and when there was a shortage of iPods. I pointed out that there were better MP3 players available, but no, they only wanted iPods. :shrug: That was purely fashion.

But it is not. Worldwide the iPod is recognised at the best mp3 player on the planet, and no it is not just marketing.

Again sky has one button touch to record, amazing for non technical. And again it is regarded as one of the best User interfaces around.

that is exactly where the market lies, why would this device not do that?

Are you serious? Back up to a total of 64Gb of storage? Edit pictures with what?

But it is not. Worldwide the iPod is recognised at the best mp3 player on the planet, and no it is not just marketing.

Have you got a source for that? it's a pretty broad reaching statement you've made there.

Not everybody needs this device, I think possibly lots of the general public won't see the benefit of spending £350+ on a device they never had the need for before.

Not everybody will need one, but technophobe or style conscious, who want a device for browsing the net, twitter facebook etc. Playing music, and a little light work now and again have now a choice other than a netbook.

being in the price bracket of netbooks, this is surely where the device lies in the market.

You're kidding right?

sky is literally fool proof. My dad is the biggest luddite there is and even he can work it. I didn't show him a thing

OSX is like a hotel. Looks good, costs a little extra, but you never need to worry about cleaning it up or buying new furniture because it is all taken care of behind the scenes.:lol:

exactly, windows is like a half board holiday.

OSX is like staying at the ritz! :lol::lol::lol:

Are you serious? Back up to a total of 64Gb of storage? Edit pictures with what?

In the same way you back up to a netbook. It is not a mass backup device, but neither is what it competes with. You could store a lot of jpeg p&s shots on there, which is what it is for then back them up to disk or whatever. 8GB is loads of jpegs on the average point and shoot.

There is such a thing as too much simplicity! :lol:

You'll struggle to make this point stick I think...

Interesting household analogy. In that case my Mac is like a lounge. I use it, do what I want and it cleans itself up (actually my girlfriend cleans up but the point is I don't have to do it).

The difference is with Apple is that while, yes, the freedom to clog your machine up with crap is available, it's so bloody difficult to do so.

Not the only thing, but if it was, why is that bad?

As previously stated in the thread, some of us don't want to be computer geeks. It's nice to turn the thing on, use it and then turn it off again.

I dunno... A similarly specced Mac will have a 33% premium to a Windows model...

Contradicts what I've seen, how do you work out your PC is 4 times faster?
Actually all the real world evidence I've ever seen shows a "lower spec" mac running faster than a slightly "higher spec" PC. I can't get figures anymore, as most of the family now run macs.

Absolutely, the interface is superb on their portable products, you literally can't beat it no matter what you do.
sounds like the interface on the non portable products too :)

It should have an sd card reader too

you mean like this?

usb_connectors_20100127.jpg

It should have an sd card reader too

Agreed, at least should have had one of them.

Looks like the user will have to use iTunes to add content to it.
As good as it may be, it'll be very limited if you don't already have a computer, or buy one at the same time. That makes it seem pretty obvious that it's not intended to replace anything current tbh.

I think I'd like one, but won't be chucking my money in its direction just yet.

Perfect. Now I can get one for the wife so she can browse FB, her photos, movies and music without whining at me for hogging the laptop.

Thanks Apple you just forced me to spend $499 of my hard earned or face the wrath of "I want it, its so cute!" for the next 12 months.

WTB less talk about osx vs win, mac vs pc, and more about the Ipad :)
