We ( I work for them ;) )call it the Reciever now, and it's at v2.0 on the app store with full gateway integration. Yay, 100% of windows apps on the iPhone / iPod Touch, and undoubtedly the iPad too ;)

BTW, I don't want an iPad even though I do like my Mac's

Best thing you can probably do is not buy one then! ;)

Pretty dissappointed so far. The software is going to make or break this. I do like the idea of using it as a portfolio presentation tool. But apart from that I can't see what else I'd be using it for. Maybe eating dinner off of?

Haha, typical product of a sensationalised Apple public relations scheme.

"We're going to revolutionise everything but we're not telling you what it is!"

Everyone's suggesting things - "It's going to be this!" "No way, it's going to be tonnes better!"

Then it arrives and, oh wait, it's a big iPod Touch (I do believe it has exactly the same features as an iPod touch with perhaps a few word processing programmes and possibly photo editing).

This has a single use: Home

It is completely impractical in every single other environment.

It is extremely large for what it is, doesn't fold in half like a netbook might
It doesn't look comfortable to hold, and considering it's touch screen, holding it with one hand and touching it with the other leads to the product moving in the consumer's hand (you see an example of this in the video)
It looks fantastic for exactly the kind of thing Steve Jobs was doing in the video:
Sitting in an armchair in the comfort and safety of your own home and reading the paper/emails.

Anything other than that it is simply a very gimmicky Apple product. Shame on you Apple.

(Can anyone tell I'm studying Advertising and Media Communication at uni? :naughty:)

you dont need to be studying advertising and media to work that out at all though, sadly.

There were several "tablets" shown at CES this year including a prototype HP model. running W7. E Readers and similar seem to have captured the imagination in the US not so much over here.

If you need a netbook then I think the iPad may be a good option, May be enough computing power for most people. As long as you can run a word processor, have a calender and browse the web, that'll be enough . The fact you can connect a wireless keyboard won't hurt either.

Can't see any reference to Flash. The inability to play full web content I think is a serious error. I wonder if this is due to concern by 3G network providers over bandwidth demands. It's a shame as this could be an interesting option for print publications, to offer something different via a subscription service.

Maybe iPad MKll will have it. Not a problem with Windows 7 enabled devices.

Trying to think of a reason to get one, but honestly can't. My iPhone and laptop do everything I need at the moment. If it had OSX and a decent storage capacity might have been different. However I'm sure it will be a big success.

Well I'm significantly underwhelmed, and I was so looking forward to wanting one :(

£500 for an A4 sized iPod touch :shake:

No Flash support.
No camera (not even a rear facing one for Skype etc).
Can't run multiple apps
Almost no connectivity (although you can bet Apple will sell you a USB adapter etc)
No OSX so limited to apps from the iStore

Hardly the revolution that Apple were proclaiming :(

This is what got my goat more than anything else, Jobs proclaiming to "revoluntionsie computing" to the applause of his cronies.... :'( ARM revolutionised computing, Alan Turin revolutionised computing, Windows 1 revolutionised computing.. Apple have revolutionised marketing and hats off to 'em, Jobs will be laughing all the way to the bank ;)

A lot of the time people say, "Oh, slap an Apple logo on it and anyone will buy it."

Brands sell themselves, it's only when a brand is dying that you have to revolutionise it.
I don't think Apple as a brand were going anywhere near a downward slope, and so this seems to be a completely unnecessary release.

Unfortunately, it seems that people want it.

Heck, I want one. It would be really cool to sit in front of the tele or in the garden and browse, doss around, but it is simply a toy. An expensive, not very useful one at that.

 Sean! After that long post... and you want one! They look so swish - I dont blame you at all - heck I didnt really want an iPhone - but as soon as I got one I absolutely adored it and fell in love

Hmmm fair one. But you know you will own one eventually....

One very large bag of 'fail'.

Is this seriously the hardware they have had people developing for the past 24 months :lol:

I honestly won't!

The only Apple product I own is an iPod, and that's because it is priced reasonably.
It's a portable video/audio player, small, easy to use, long battery life for £120. Brilliant. You literally have no other product on the market that can match the iPod for features.

I want an iPhone but it's just too expensive. It gets 10/10 on every review. The HTC Hero is substantially cheaper, and gets 9/10 on reviews. I'll settle for the Hero.

I would like the sleekness of an iMac or a Macbook, but I hate, hate the operating system. In my opinion it is simple to the point of stupidity. Windows 7 is a far, far better operating system than OSX in my opinion. It's likely I feel that way because I've always used Windows, but after hours and hours of use on an iMac I still can't get used to the unnerving, frustrating simplicity of the OS.

Now I'm not putting Apple down, they're brilliant. They have noticed a gap in the market, filled it, and made a substantial profit from that. They better everyone at everything they do. Their products are just as much technological advances as they are fashion accessories.

I just can't get past the fact that for your money, you just don't get that much.

I would rather stick with the MacBook Air than buy the iPad.

There are a couple of things people here are missing.

Firstly the iBook stuff. Loads of people are buying Sony Kimbles for what turns out to be not a huge amount of difference in cost that these are going t be. This will be a much better book reader than the current offering and with all the rest of the features. So it's going to be a good seller for that reason alone.

Also the LED backlit screen. If you have not yet seen the quality of LED backlit screens you are going to poo your pants when you see them. They are stunning. I would much rather lay in bed and watch a movie on the iPad with the LED screen than a) my iphone which is tiny or b) an awkward laptop.

those two reasons alone are enough to make me want to buy one.

also all those talking about no flash support and not being able to run apps in the background. That will no doubt be coming in an update so I have no worries there

That's the same as me, it looks quite swish for general armchair surfing, where a w7 slate wouldn't be, yet I then remember it lacks so many features it makes it unusable. Widescreen, full internet (Major issue!), USB and the closed down nature of the platform. All I can see it being is an expensive mobile photo frame!

The W7 slates that are coming out will certainly be better for my mobile needs (ability to run older windows games, basic PS editing and as control and mass storage for my camera) but something like this would be good as a coffee table gadget, just it hasn't realised it's full potential.

That's what I don't understand, the Air is so thin that removing the screen and sticking it where the keyboard was would be easy and create an excellent reasonably powered slate. Just a shame they haven't.

Think all the bad points have already been listed, but for me its this:

No OLED screen
No front facing camera- no skype>skype or ichat webcam chat etc
No memory card slot/upgrade options
No USB port for reading memory sticks etc
No multitasking
Price- geeeeeeeeeez
No Flash
Sounding like I can't install my own apps- only Jobs approved stuff
Too small/underpowered for everyday use- too large to carry everywhere.

And probably most of all- I can't see the need for me. I have a netbook with linux, its great, I have a HTC hero phone- thats also great.

That's really too naughty.....

The iPad will not be a much better book reader for the reason e-ink was invented in the first place. Have you ever actually looked at e-ink screens? They actually look like paper (to the extent that the first time I looked at one I hought it was a mock up, until i pressed a button and the screen changed!). This has the problem of poor battery life and bright screens, most likely unreadable in the sunlight. It's also far bigger, being the size of an A4 pad (ish), whereas most readers are only slightly bigger than a normal novel.

Yep I have, my laptop has had one for two years. Compared to a good normal backlit screen there isn't actually much difference, it just saves weight, size and power, which is why they are used more and more in laptops and other devices. I have to agree, this example is partly why I want a slate device, for those bed and long train journey moments, problem is this uses a 4x3 screen meaning widescreen films (most) will be relegated to a small patch in the middle.

As for flash, people have been saying that for years, hasn't happened yet, and possibly for a good reason. People aren't going to buy as many apps if they can just play flash games on their phone..:)

doesn't matter how good e-ink is. If i can get a book reader and watch movies, and listen to music and surf the web on one device, I'm going to get that and suffer not having e-ink. It's the lesser of the evils. So although it won't be a better book reader, it will be a better all in one device that is also a book reader.

the 4:3 thing is no biggy, widescreen movies will still be a lot bigger than they are on my iphone so thats good enough for me.

I'm sorry but the LED backlight is awesome, I don't care what you compare it to.

No, it's huge. I would not want to read a book off of that. Hence why the Sony EBook reader was created.

also all those talking about no flash support and not being able to run apps in the background. That will no doubt be coming in an update so I have no worries there

See I have huge doubts about that.

I don't want to re-open the whole windows/mac debate again, but that quote is pure gold!!!!!!

In a good way or a bad way? I'm not sure if I'm being mocked or being praised :help: :bonk:

I seriously doubt that, since they have had a phone on the market for the last 3 years that hardware wise could do both of these things- yet it doesn't......

I semi agree with you, which is partly why I don't have an e-reader yet, however the iPad really isn't an alternative to e readers for the majority of people.

For example most people have an mp3 player and carry them around all the time, listen to all your music on a device that will last up to 40 hours. Also while on holiday you take your e reader with a few dozen books installed onto it, you read half a dozen over the week and don't need to charge up either the mp3 or e reader, doing both with an iPad will mean you have to charge it up every few hours!)

I plan on travelling a lot in the near future and my plan invloves getting an e-reader for reading (something the width and height of a novel for easy carrying), a slate type device for my non laptop needs (when not taking my laptop and for general lazing so web, video, games) and a small laptop (13") for my proper computing needs. This device doesn't fit in to any part of that and from the disussion in this thread an a much bigger one on another forum most people seem to think that.:(

I don't quite get your comment on the LED backlight. Yes they are slightly better than normal, however take two decent IPS panels and stick normal lightling in one and LED lighting in another and the only real difference you could tell between them is the LED one will get a lot brighter. Much like the LED backlit screens in shops, massively over bright and saturated to make them look better. They cannot be compared to AMLED or OLED screens however, which really are the bees knees.

I carry a Macbook pro to work every day which is not connected to the internet and I have been considering getting a 3G card, currently it's a glorified photo frame in the office. The ipad would be an ideal alternative, a photo frame with bells on, I could check my home e-mail, face book and other things banned by my intranet and then have a nice slide shows of photos.

If it was less than £500 with a not too expensive data contract I would be all over it.

Do you know, honestly I don't know anyone who has an e-book device. Not one.

I work for a technology company and there's quite a few netbooks, not one ebook. Straw poll this morning is no-one fancies an A4 ipod touch.

If you look at the iPad it's aimed at a very specific market.

People who simply browse the internet. Use Twitter, Facebook get emails.etc.

This super slim product will appeal to a lot of them. It's at more expensive than the cheapest netbook, but it's instant on, with an alleged battery life of 10 hours ( believe it when I see it), plus it looks pretty cool ( not a real reason to buy it but will attact some, probably a lot of people)

It may even start the ebook market over here. Would be interesting to see which magazine starts publishing for it first!

So essentially the "sleeveless jumper" brigade, those that update their statuses 12 times a day and spend more time on facebook than atually working?

See I reckon that netbooks are actually a waste.

Whenever I found one, it feels like way too much of a compromise. The screen is too small, meaning the display is set at something stupid so all the text is readable, the keyboard is small and fiddly and it isn't a real replacement for a proper computer (beit laptop or desktop) due to performance problems. Plus you're stuck using a crappy little touchpad.

Doing away with the keyboard and NOT running OSX means the software running is designed for the product, rather than including it. A netbook is trying to emulate a laptop, an ipad is standalone and everything will just 'work'.

As said, the lack of flash is a pretty major problem for something designed to surf the net. Camera would be nice (for others, I would never use one personally).

As someone with neither an iphone or macbook, I think its perfect. It'll be nice to use like the iphone, big enough to display photos/websites/emails at a decent resolution and I'll be able to create and edit short documents. Thats exactly what I do with my current laptop, except I won't have to sit at a desk any more :)

Having slept on it, there is something drawing my to it! Dunno what it is, maybe it's that hidden "Apple Quality", but I can't get the fact that for photo viewings, this thing would be simply awesome. Useless at loads of other stuff, but as an interactive brochure, it's on the money...

I would *prefer* this though, but pricey:

well for a start OS4.0 is going to have apps running in the background so don't doubt too hard

Useless at everything except for what it was primarily designed and that is consuming content. Not creating it, not editing it, just consuming it. And at that, once developers have had their grubby fingers on it for a few months, it will be untouchable, just like the iPhone is now in it's field.
