Review iPad Review & TP Update Thread

 But of course you can!
I am down at the 'ol Barn' tonight for a meeting if you fancy a play. And if not I shall bring it to the TP mini meet.

Congrats on the anniversary!

I've almost gone full circle on the pad in the last week or so.

As much as I would love one, I would still be missing the flash aspect on it. There are sites I use pretty much daily using flash that I don't want to stop using.

That leaves me with the choice of using both the ipad and a laptop for browsing = pointless.

Massive shame as I can really see the point of it, and with flash would be a complete package for me, but without is a very expensive toy.

Now that is tempting! If it weren't for the 3am bed time this morning and the Archie alarm call 3 hours later, I might just have taken you up on that.

Do you have plans for next week at all? I am planning an excursion to Guildford on BH Monday to see Harper in Journey's End if you fancy it.

Hi guys, I am typing this from my iPad which I have had for a couple of days now and absolutely love! A quick heads up for anyone who has one, make sure you get the free Guardian eye witness app. Every day they post a new picture and put a quick one liner in as to why that photo is outstanding. The app is made in conjunction with canon.

Oh and I have managed to instal iBooks and buy books too :) and yes I am in the uk. You need a buddy in the US or anyone with a US credit card to buy you some iTunes gift vouchers.

I had a play with one whilst in Florida last week. Spent an hour in the apple shop and am 100% going to buy one of these. The only decision left is which one, as I would really want the 3g version so I can update my exchange account on the move.

That's what stopped me buying one there and then.

I had the same thought but I don't want multiple data contracts. Currently I am using my nokia n95 with some software called joiku to turn the phone into a wireless access point. However I have to say the battery on the phone dies quick. It's fine in the car or near a PowerPoint or for abort periods etc.

My friend has rooted his android phone and unlocked similar functionality. Another option is mifi. At the end of the day my smartphone always has connectivity whether it be blackberry, iPhone, symbian, windows mobile, or android.

Kind of off topic, but I also use the Joiku app on my N95 (8GB). Very clever piece of software, but I find that if I leave it running the battery is flat in the best part of 40 minutes (from a full charge!).

Presumably you haven't found anyway to stop it draining the battery so quick?

Sorry, not found any way to stop it draining the battery. I just stick it in a power source. I figure if im mobile i will be reading mail on the phone anyway. Saw a guy using ipad on the tube the other day. Looked really silly. Still, didnt stop me using mine on the train home lol.

My HTC HD2 can do that too.

No-one is yet sure how the 3g one is going to be sold over here. O2 - last time I asked, said they were'nt going to be supplying the hardware but would supply the sim. Again, I couldnt get any detail on what basis that would be.

In the states apple have forced AT&T to provide a turnon/off at will data contract, so you only use it when you need it. Maybe they're doing the same over here with the Data. We'll find out on the 10th I guess.

FYI my friend just got 4-5 hours of continuous surfing using his nexus one as his tethered hot spot.

Interesting. I'm now leaning more towards the wifi only, unless the 3g ones come on contract with a reasonable subsidy.

One of my friends on holiday in Florida has just offered to bring one back for me.........

Is it good for surfing in hospital ? as it may have to be if I get it :(

(Mrs Gubby doesn't want me to buy it)

It's good for all types of surfing, I am guessing; be it in a hospital or at the beach ;)

(Mrs Gubby doesn't want me to buy it)

That's the case with most Mrs.; solution, get her a new pair of shoes, or a handbag, and all will be well .

My wife found out how much I spent on it... Ouch

That's really kind of you mate. I'd love at case. Hope I get to repay the favour some day.

:) no worries dude - tis on its way.

Will have a think about the US account too.

Thanks matey

Wootles! Got the case this am! Thanks so much. Byebye padded envelope.

Have you guys seen this? It looks amazing.

By the way, I can touch type on the iPad now at almost the same speed as a normal keyboard. My accuracy is not as good yet but its close.

I wish you lot would shut up.......

My mate was going to bring one back from Florida for me, 64Gb for £470 but the Financial Controller refused :'(

* The reason was that I've apparently already spent too much this year

**On a brand new Corsa for her :bang:

Argh nooooo! You could always grab one second hand soon??
Or sell off a load of unneeded gadgets to cover cost?

Sad thing is that the £470 price you were going to pay for a 64GB top model will only stretch to the base 16GB model here... Flipping Apple, Flipping UK Taxes!

Actually, I am not sure I can stomach the prices. Its just a little too expensive for me, £429 base spec. Hmm, not sure what to do!

As an aside, is there a good app for looking at photos on a server? I wouldn't want to stick all of my photos on it- it would take up too much room!

Jim, The pad 'optimizes' images - ie changes size and res. Will have a look this weekend at how much it reduces filesize.

I would still rather keep them all on my server and access as required. Damn Apple and locking everything down as tight as a nun's lower areas! All I want to do is spend money on their shiny techy goodness and they make it so hard!

Ok just gauged a test folder. It is 47.2mb on the macbook, and when uploaded to the Pad and 'optimized' it uses 27.8mb....

With the release of the prices today I have, finally, decided that I shant be getting one.

Sub £400 (or the £370 as rumoured) might have been stomach-able but at over £400 its a very expensive toy and nothing more.

Might as well stick with my laptop and ipod touch until either falls apart and then revisit whats available at that time. The biggest issue is the lack of flash though, price is second.

Ok... WANT THIS... NOW!:

Has anybody tried conecting their iPad to 3G using a phone as a WiFi access point ?

It would save me buying the 3G version & another network tariff :)

I havent tried it yet but I will be.

(3G Access point that is... NOT marital strife.... not for a good few years yet....just practise until then....)

I do it regularly and it works great. I used software on my nokia n95 8gb called joiku. However, one massive downside is that it reduces the battery life to about 40 minutes! :(

My friend has an android phone - the google nexus one. He can get 4-5hrs of constant use out of his. I am thinking of changing to an htc desire. When you consider that the 3g contract is yet another bill to pay (even if it is only usage based) when you have data already included in your mobile phone contract AND the ipad itself costs a fair bit more i just dont see the point in it. I might as well pay another few hundred quid, get myself a top of the line smart phone that i can use when i dont want to carry the ipad, and reuse my existing contract.

By the way - he DID need to 'root' his android phone to make it happen but i am assured this is easy to do and leaves you with a much more flexible phone.

YMMV

Was this using an iPad with your Nokia dubcat?

Yes. The iPad just see's another access point. It does not know that it's going via 3g... just that it has a wifi connection.
