My wife has decided to buy me a tablet for Christmas, I'm torn between an iPad 16gb Wifi and some of the Android tablets, the Archos 101 looks good and is a good spec, also weighs in £150 cheaper than the ipad.

Has anyone experience of any Android tablets? I use a HTC desire, so am used to the android system. Is it a bit more advanced than an ipad? USB, micro SD etc. I also know that I can browse my home network on my HTC desire.

The tablet will be used for general browsing mail etc, anything else will be on the desktop...

Advice appreciated

Thanks

ipad doesn't support FLASH so your probably better going down the android route if you want more compatibility browsing.

Also saw some info that IPAD2 is in development obviously not going be until 2011 sometime that it comes out.

Android all the way (unless you want the super sharp screen I'm just charging my Advent Vega. At £250 and a more powerful processor than the Archos. It has already been jailbroken too... Will let you know what I think of it when I've had a play.

Rumour I head was february for Ipad 2. Camera for facetime, higher res screen of the iphone 4, lots more memory.

Before deciding, try and compare the screens of the two devices side-by-side. The Android tablets I've seen so far have got quite poor screens in comparison to the iPad. The viewing angle is particularly bad.

I very much doubt that the iPad 2 will have a screen with the same resolution as the iPhone 4. That would need a 4096 x 3072 pixel screen - that's 16 times the size of the current iPad. It's about 6 times more than a high-res monitor, which needs a chunky graphics card to handle it.

I have an iPad and I have to say its a great sales tool!

Used it at this years NEC wedding show to great effect, had it loaded with every wedding I have ever shot so it was great for showing potential clients additional weddings once they had been through our physical albums. Client would say where they were getting married and if I had shot there in the last few years I would bring up the 50 or so shots from that wedding and let them page through them on the iPad, perfect device for that and a great client experience.

Out of curiosity I had a look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab when that was released and I have to say I was less than impressed.

I think apple got the size of the iPad spot on (lest for me it is), the galaxy tab just felt like a comedy phone that was too big.

Flash performance was very poor, first few sites I tried the browser crashed, the one I did get to work was horridly jerky.

The screen was the other big issue. As a photographer I think the photos on the iPad look great, photos on the galaxy tab looked very poor in comparison, blacks didnt look black and the size and resolution just didn't give a wow experience. I did think that someone had maybe just messed with the screen brightness but I have since heard a few fellow togs say the same about the screen.

I ended up getting an iPad, I got one on another forum for £360 delivered, the iPad was still sealed and is brand new. Got it today, very good. I will be home downloading apps shortly..

Do not download Angry Birds. Not if you want to do anything else before Xmas.
