Yes
Birthday cash burning a hole in my pocket so was planning on getting an ipad over the weekend, I've wanted one since they were released but seeing as I've waited this long I'm unsure whether to just wait now until Early 2011 (if rumours are to be believed) and get the ipad 2.

I don't want to look back and think I wish I'd have waited but then again 6 months is a long time when a boy needs a new gadget....

What would you guys do?!?

Having read a few what it might/might not have rumours I don't think the new model will give me anymore than I need with the current model but I suppose its more about having the latest on the market gadget if that makes sense....

Well, A Nikon D400 or D800 was due out by now.... no sign yet...

The thing with Apple is they constantly bring out new kit,so "the next model" is only ever round the corner.

Very true, I suppose if we all waited for the next "new" model we'd never buy anything!

I was all set to hold out until the next version came out with a camera and other things but caved in when I did the national wedding show last month.

Did the Friday of the show without an iPad and realised that having one and being able to let clients flip through any of my weddings (rather than just my physical album samples) would help seal deals whilst there and it definitely did, booked 7 weddings over the weekend and attribute at least some of them directly to it.

Yup I could have done the same on a laptop or digital photo frame but letting clients flip through albums on an iPad is a much better client experience imo.

As a mobile portfolio I don't think it can be beaten, I have a sample on mine from everything I have shot over the last 3 and half years.

The other thing to remember about apple products is that they generally hold a decent percentage of their value at second hand resale so when the new one comes out if there's enough new features I will sell my current one and upgrade to the new one.

I'd wait and see what the pad wars actually settle out to. Give it 6-12 months and we're going to see a whole lot more products at much better prices hit the market.

Oh, and ipads can't play flash which is a major problem....

There will always be something newer and better (or worse) around the corner, if you are buying something as a replacement, waiting isn't quite as bad, but personally I'd rather have an iPad now and have not the latest iPad in x months time when the new one comes out, than have no iPad at all for x months.

FWIW, to me lack of Flash is not a major problem, it depends on individual users. A lot of Flash content has fallback HTML and you get less adverts.

Really happy with my IPad and it is great for showing my albums especially linked up with Mobileme

The more I look into it, the more I think Android tablets will rule in 2 years time....

Buy to suit your requirements I reckon. Forget having the best of the best if you don't need it (don't say that to the wife though!).

Not sure I can agree with you on this one, although I do have to admit having had an Ipad from launch (1st Apple device).

For business users I think it will be a three way race between Apple, Blackberry and HP (Palm) mainly based on management and security needs.

For personal users, its probably going to be very similar to the current Smartphone breakdown with Apple and Android leading and Windows tagging along behind.

I've had an Ipad since launch & use it every day BUT will probably sell it when the larger Android tablets hit the market. I'm just finding that the Apple way is not for me. I like to control my use, not have the supplier dictate it :)

I saw and had a play with the Samsung Tab yesterday. I cannot believe that it will make a dent in iPad sales one jot - if nothing else it is more expensive and that was the area that I was convinced that others would steal the show.

The problem for iPad isn't the Samsung, it's the whole raft of cheaper pads that are being/about to be released. I'm quite tempted by the Advent Vega which is due for launch any day now. 10" screen, full HD playback, chrome based web browser, 10 hr battery life etc... all for £250. If it had wireless N, I'd buy it like a shot.

IMHO, you only have to look at android phone sales trends (outselling iPhones now) to see iPad probably has a limited life - or at least will be relegated to <10% of sales long term.

I had a play with a Tab this morning. For a photographer, especially, it's a steaming pile of wombat poo. The screen seems incapable of displaying black, rendering it as a not-very dark grey. Other colours are similarly washed-out. It was like looking at an iPad that had had a pint of milk poured over it.

I'd say just go ahead and get the current version. New 3rd party software is adding to it's functionality all the time. If you have the balls to jailbreak it (I don't) then you'll probably get more functionality than Steve Jobs is ever likely to give you with any future version. ;)

taken the plunge and come home today with a 32gb non 3G model, now off to check out the must have apps thread........

I've had an Ipad since Launch day - and as said above - use it every day.

Only thing missing for me is IOS4, which is "Imminent"

Its always interesting to see the next "Ipad Killer" or "iphone killer" that comes out, never seems to make much of a dent.

As for Android outselling Iphone, I thought that was only in the US? And even that has been debated hotly as the figures are debateable.

Hey, let me know when you sell it, I maybe interested!

ta!

Mmmm very interesting! Iv just got a HTC desire as it has a big screen so I always have the ability to show people if I bump into someone, but was thinking I should get an ipad for the same reason...... :suspect:

I think that if a wedding tog handed me a phone to look at pictures on I would jump to the wrong conclusion. If they handed me a Samsung Tab, i'd think they were not as successful as the guy with ipads.

Guess I really am that shallow.

That makes two of us. If I were planning my wedding and a prospective photographer showed me his pics on a phone I'd probably assume that's what he used to actually take them. If they showed my the pics on a Tab then I'd wonder why it was foggy inside the church. If they showed me the pics on an iPad and told me I'd get one with my pics on it as part of the price... Well, I'd probably want to marry the photographer!

Interesting review of tablets in yesterday's Sunday Times 'In Gear'. Pointed out deficiencies and high price of Ipad, but it still came out top.

What did they compare it against?

Advent Vega £250 - 3 stars and 'Best for Value'
Archos 101 £270 - 3 stars and 'Best for Entertainment'
Novatech nTablet £350 - 3 stars and 'Best for Work'
Elonex eTouch 1000eT £159 - 2 stars and 'Best for entry-level price'

iPad 16GB got 4 stars and best for all round quality - worth the high price it said.

There, all from memory too. ;)

Hmm... am thinking about the Advent (I think I've just confirmed myself as a gadget geek as I don't need another PC - we have 6 PCs and a PC setup as a dedicated media centre here) but would be interested to understand where the ipad bettered the vega..

Well, one problem with both the Archos and Advent is that they can't use the Android Marketplace to get apps. Indeed, my guess is that the reason the Advent's launch has been delayed so often is because they're finding it takes longer than they thought to get more than a few apps in their own store.

Yes, supposed to be an update "in January" that will allow that. Although they'll have to drop the requirement for a 3G SIM (I wouldn't pay for one just for a tablet)... Guess I'll have to wait and see, although having a full featured browser and media player in an easy to handhold package would be great

I'm holding out for the next gen iPad before I buy, it won't be too long a wait I wouldn't have thought.

Oh, and as for flash, simply download Skyfire which will allow you to play flash videos.

Apple are now trailing (yet) another "life changing" announcement for tomorrow involving iTunes, so it's likely iOS4.2 will be in there somewhere as the new iTunes needed to release first.

3pm tomorrow is the time they will reverse the earth's polarity. Or something.

OK, scrap that one then. Nothing significant announced at all.

Not to mention that it will require a new version of iTunes, which will also require the latest version of the operating system (anything older than an hour must be upgraded to the latest). iTunes will now also require 3 terabytes of RAM and a quad core processor to run smoothly and will render any previous device on an older OS a doorstop.

always own the odd variations of apple devices.

Buy the 1st gen, skip the 2nd and buy the 3rd gen. Apply this to iphone

iphone 1 - new gadget, you don't have to wait
iphone 3g - same as 1 but with 3g
iphone 3gs - way imporved over 1st gen, has 3g and has much improved speed etc
iphone 4 - if you have a 3gs then it's nothing more than an imporved slightly screen and rubbish facetime

own the 1st gen so you don't have to wait to own something you want, then skip 2 and buy 3. Simples

Buy it, love it, be amazed you lived without it.

Android has it's place, but anything open source just never works as well as something deisgned for a specific device. I have had Android devices since the G1 and am now on my 4th android device, I will not buy an android tablet device though.
I bought an iPad and it's making me wish I had an iPhone too, it JUST WORKS. No messing about, no force closing, no crashes, quick, pretty, I LOVE IT.

As for waiting, I waited too long, and wish I hadn't, I bought a netbook a year ago instead of an iPad, as I thought I could do more, I was wrong.

It really depends. If you want interoperability without jumping through hoops, the ipad isn't it.... I'm looking at an android device with HD replay so I can play my HD content wherever I am around the house without having to have a powerful PC there instead (the latest tegra 2 devices will play HD very efficiently - just not sure they can stream it well yet). I'd love a netbook, but that just won't cut it.

It remains to be seen how integrated an Android tablet becomes. One things for sure, they are priced far more competitively - the DSG 10.1" version sold out in less than 24 hours a few days ago - helped no doubt by its £250 price tag..
