Hi folks,

I have been an Apple fan for a very long time and due to recent business commitments I have moved over from the Iphone to the Galaxy S3 and have also bought a Samsung Galxy note - so far I am very, very impressed and found the transition faily simple.

I have had an Ipad for as long as they have been out and on release date have always upgraded to the newer version. There are a few things that the Ipad doesn't do that Android tablets do - and I'm not just bitching about Flash...lol.

I've read review after review and I have yet to come across a tablet which scores as highly as the Ipad 3. Being very mobile I need for the tablet to have 3g.

Has anyone got any ideas, or suggestions for a tablet which is as good as the Ipad 3 3G? I need an Ipad killer!

Thanks in advance!

Mark

I thought you were about to tell me about an iPad killer that you'd found !!

What about the Microsoft Surface - do the specs have what you need?

I wish I had Adrian!

The surface looks amazing and recently had the opportunity to play with one at a Teaching & Learning conference I attended. They are really nice, not sure about the Metro interface, but would certainly do the trick. Only draw back is the release date isn't until October :(

I need something pretty soonish!

This. I'm far from an Apple fan-boy, but as far as android tabs go, nothing yet is better than the 3.

The Transformer prime is probably the best android based tablet out at the moment AFAIK.

Mates just ordered a Ployer Momo from our friends in the east. Get rave reviews for the price, but ipad killer they aint

Thanks, Paul. I have a friend with the 1st gen Transformer and he's had loads of problems with it. So has kinda put me off buying a Prime.

I'll read into the Momo - if it's cheap enough then I see no reason as to why I can't have both :naughty:

well it still has the google map based system until iOS6 in the autumn?

why specifically the google system though?

Neil - the IOS version of Maps is cut down and doesn't provide the functionality required.

I am a Google Trusted Photographer, responsible for shooting virtual tours which link in to Google Street View.

When demonstrating Google Business Photos to potential clients I need to be able to demonstrate the product perfectly, and whiclst it works on the Ipad, it doesn't work properly.

Obviously Google has made sure that Google Business Photos works with their phones and tablets perfectly, unfortunately it hasn't happned with the Ipad/Iphone.

I honestly love the Ipad and if it wasn't for this 'issue' I wouldn't be making the switch!

I currently have 2 android tablets (Asus transformer and Acer iconia ) and have just purchased an iPad 3.

Without a doubt android is a better OS in so many ways, I have the original transformer and prefer the screen shape to the iPad and like the fact that without adapters I can plug in a micro sd card and plug in a HDMI cable. The iPad however feels nicer in my hand.

So the android tablet overall is better by a long way. Then there is the ability to attach a keyboard with an extra battery in to the transformer and it is streets ahead.

The iPad is the first device I have purchased that runs apps. This is what makes the iPad good. The device and OS are limiting, but the apps that are available make me feel like a second class citizen being on android. The quality of apps is better, more brands have apps on iOS, but there are less free apps and they generally cost more.

You have sky go and lovefilm player on the iPad, both missing from android. 1 apps I use quite a bit is Zendesk, it constantly crashed on my android devices and on the iPad has loads more features. Microsoft One Note is also better on iOS

I prefer my android tablet, but my iPad allows me to be more productive.

It is easy to beat the iPad and iOS, but you can't beat the apps store.

When more apps for tablets appear, android has a chance, but the market needs lots of work. Windows 8 has the chance to wipe android out of the tablet arena unless Google sorts itself out and companies really look at android tablets for apps development.

Stay with the iPad.

I've had a few tablets Android and the Blackberry Playbook and to me the issue with Android isn't so much the OS which is really good particularly on new tabs its the fact theres so much fragmentation, unlike iOS where there is just one version for everything and older devices (eventually) get dropped off theres anything up to 4-5 versions of Android currently in use which makes it very hard to get apps to work on all versions.

Theres very much a feeling for me with Android that any device will be out-of-date within the year, with an iPad (at least the newest one) I can take some comfort in that its going to be supported for likely at least 2 years and is probably unlikely to be superceded much by the next giving me a good 18-24 months use before I need to think about an upgrade.

Hence my ordering of an iPad today, I just feel that currently it will give me a better all round experience with the Apps and media that my prior Android device doesnt yet give.

That said I'm due a phone change soon and I can honestly say by Blackberry Bold will be getting binned and I'm more likely to pick an Android phone than an iPhone (unless the iPhone 5 is amazing...)

If flash is something you want, be aware that the latest version/s of Android no longer have flash support. There may be a way so side load it but Adobe will not be supporting or updating it for Adroid versions past ICS.

how about nexus 7 tablet ? basically a s3 with out the phone bits and bigger screen. been a Google device , it is better supported .

But it doesn't have flash.

I don't think an iPad killer has been brought out yet, the IT guy here prefers his Nexus 7 to his iPad, but he's an Android fanboy and uses it mainly for reading.

Mark, if you already got an Ipad and a Samsung Galaxy Note - why change? If having the retina display version there is no need to upgrade. But if you want to try something new perhaps Google Nexus 10 would be interesting?

Being a Google Business Photographer myself I went with a Samsung Galaxy Note II, which is very handy to bring and still show 360 tours perfectly. I find Nexus 7 and Ipad with 7" display unless. Either go big or go mobile (eg. Samsung Galaxy Note II) is my opinion.

Being very mobile I need for the tablet to have 3g.

Why? My tablet is not 3G but i can use it everywhere you can use yours.

Thats because i set my phone up as a wifi hotspot and use the unlimited data from my phone free of charge - so in short my tablet cost less than the 3g version and i also pay no extra per month....

Nexus 10?

I do like the iPad and the polished feel, but the wifi keeps dropping, the auto screen rotate can be temperamental.....

Apple stuff is fussy about wifi routers. They don't seem to get on well with netgears. D-link seem ok. My MacBook was shockingly awful with wifi til I changed from netgear.

Interesting! It's a Virgin one, which I think may be Netgear. But my main plain PC runs like a dream with it so I'm afraid she'll have to suffer with her bling bling machine!

If its a super hub then they're known to be pretty useless at wifi anyway.

If you lock it in 2.4 ghz mode it might be more stable for everyone.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is superb. I have a transformer tf101 which is excellent but let down by the dull and slightly fuzzy screen. The note 10.1 has a much better screen - still not as good as the latest ipad but only in that aspect.
I held a note next to an ipad 3 in store and couldn't really see much of a difference in screen quality. For every other aspect the note wins hands down.
I bought one there and then and haven't regretted it yet.
Also, I've yet to find an ios app that isnt also available on android (usually much cheaper or even free). I really cannot see the hype about ipads!

The Galaxy Note beats the iPad 3 "hands down"?

The nurse will be along with your meds anytime now :cuckoo:.

Not the Galaxy Note. The Galaxy Note 10.1. And yes, apart from the screen, take a look at the specs, after you've got off your high horse.

For instance, does the ipad have a quad core processor running at 1.4 Ghz? What about 2 Gb of RAM? No? Oh, well what about usb, can you plug and play with an external hard drive or mouse? No.
As I conceded earlier the only thing an ipad has over the note 10.1 is the screen but in real life side by side the difference is there but not that great. Plus with the S Pen the Note can do things no other tablet can. For a working photographer the Note 10.1 is nearly perfect. Can an ipad run two apps (soon to be upto 16) at the same time, side by side? No. It can't

Looks like I'll be replacing it then and get the wifey off my back! Any suggestions for a decent one?

Asus seem to be well thought of. I haven't had many issues with the old dlink-615 which vm used to hand out. It does need a restart now and then though.

What bugged me was that my old g5 imac would sit on the wireless day in and day out and never drop the connection. The macbook on the same router would be all over the place. I never understood what apple screwed up that made netgear's unusable.

I'd definitely try setting it to 2.4GHZ only mode and see if that helps first.

If you need a router with an ethernet connection out the back (I think you do as you mention Virgin), these are very well regarded: http://uk.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTN66U/

I have one here acting as an access point (I have an alternative router) and it has been flawless with better than excellent wireless signal quality.

Will try the 2.4GHz thing tonight first and then look at the Asus one. Need both wireless, preferably strong as it needs to go through multiple brick walls sometimes, and also ethernet as the main computer is running Cat6 into it.

Looks good!

Cheers

And I've got this one from Asus - http://uk.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTN56U/ connected to a virgin superhub.

The superhub was so awful I set it to modem mode (easy to do in the settings screens) and use the Asus instead. The Asus router is upstairs at the front of the house. I used to have a second wired router setup as an access point to give coverage in the garden and back of the house. With the Asus it is not needed as I get signal at the far end of the back garden.

ooo, this one is cheaper! :D

It's also slightly slower if you have lots of things using it (2x150 vs 3x150 connections). Either would be a good buy, but I got the 66 because it has external antennaes and in tests it seems to be a Carlsberg wireless (reaching the parts others don't reach ;))

Back on topic - the OP wanted an iPad alternative ('killer')....

I too have a Samsung Galaxy Note Phablet, plus an iPhone 4S, an iPad2 and a iPad Mini - the Apple kit I bought, the Note is my work phone.

The trouble I have with moving away from Apple iOS devices is the amount of money I have invested in the ecosystem (car stereo dock, speaker docks, apps, games, iBooks, music - although music is not so much of an issue these days now that DRM is removed).

I would love to have the option to buy another brand of device but feel I am kind of stuck now buying another apple device each time I feel the need, or want, to upgrade.

As far as iPad killer - I'm not sure there is a killer - some other brands tablets are coming close or exceeding in some areas - I think the iPad is still the daddy though (just).

I've got one in my mits right now, yes. As I said before the only thing the Ipad wins on is screen resolution. On paper its significant but side by side the difference is minimal.

Some reviews have suggested the Note 10.1 feels cheap and badly made. I'm not sure what they were reviewing because mine feels really good and is clearly a classy thing. I prefer the feel over the ipad, which felt quality but awkward in my hands. Note also has forward facing stereo speakers btw.

I think apple also wins on the ecosystem unless Samsung offer cloud backup and seamless sharing of calendars, notes, reminders, docs and email settings all without effort.
