Ipad... for photography!

ability to use a portfolio and if you show a client a portfolio on an ipad then it shows that you have style and class.

I must be getting old. I don't understand how any electronic device can give you style or class:shrug: Next you'll be telling me it will make the owner more attractive to the opposite/same sex.

nope, it just shows you have an ipad ;)

To be honest there are already threads on the American wedding forums about showing proper albums because people don't want to see their images on an ipad, they want albums they can feel.

Take a look at who books weddings and it ain't the groom! Look at the Apple shop and see who's in there and ain't the bride!

So it certainly does not fit all photographic applications. I like Gary's application for an integrated studio solution, that's a sensible use for it, it's actually adding something!

I bet the ladies love it when you whip your Hasselblad out Ali.

It has transformed how I interact with clients in the studio. Ipad is now used for all of the following:

  • Showing and choosing examples / styles before a shoot starts
  • Across the room posing guide
  • Booking Viewings
  • Taking Credit and Debit Card Payments
  • Contact Sheet at Viewings
  • Price List at Viewings
  • Updating my task manager at viewings
  • Keeping kids / models entertained whilst they wait on make up artist to finish friends hair etc

Sounds crazy, but I would now be gutted without it. I am going to get a second one as I want all staff to be able to use one.

Gary.

I am not surprised, for the kinds of stuff photographers do I can see an iPad being an incredibly useful tool.

How'd that elephant thing work out for you? Has she shown you her bra yet?

It may be worth waiting for some of the newer window 7 slates that are coming soon. (assuming that you are using a PC system rather than Mac that is).

Some of the systems coming do the same as the ipad but are also more useful in that you can run windows software on them i.e. Photoshop/lightroom.

Have a look at this example for instance (forum has more in depth responses) which should be available this September :)

I'm after one of these personally rather than the somewhat limited iPad (slow internet, apps only, lack of card reader etc)

lol, true, true. With regards to the ipad handling raw files, I suspect all it does is read the jpg thumbnail, and not actually 'develop' the raw file on the spot? Although I'm happy to be corrected :)

The ipod is not designed to be able to run other programs... using PS or even LR will put a strain on a processor and the battery life would take a massive hit which is one of the big selling points.

No doubt in 10 years, ipad v10 will have 1 week battery life and run the very latest software, but at the moment you have to balance performance v size, weight and battery.

We use slates/palm tops from Viliv. All the advantages of the ipad, except slower to boot from cold, but running windows so no compatibility problems with various camera software. The 3G versions also work as phones, which is sometime handy.

From what i know, the iPad does work with raw files. And the raw looks better than the JPEG, if you find that this is totally wrong if you get it, test it out as soon as you get it and return it.

The iPad displays the embedded jpeg from raw files, so there's no difference at all. Your recommendation to return the iPad if the user doesn't see a difference is wrong and irresponible.

I've heard that Apple are going to Upgrade the iPad, possible adding a camera but making the UI and OS better which would be better for photography, the Upgrade is due for before the end of this year.

Also wrong. The update to iOS4 is due later this year - giving the iPad multitasking and folders. Zero chance of new hardware.

I don't have an iPad so i don't know exactly everything

You misspelled 'anything'.

And have been coming soon for the last 6 months. All the big companies (Dell, HP, Microsoft) have dropped plans for a Win7 tablet because they know that it's unworkable.

No, it will be coming soon. I doubt it will be as good as the iPad of course.

Er, isn't that the device that was originally announced in January as being available in March. Oh, yes; it is.

I'm after one of these personally rather than the somewhat limited iPad (slow internet, apps only, lack of card reader etc)

Er, a 4h claimed battery life (I'll bet real money that's without actually doing anything). Internet same speed as iPad. Card reader is SDHC only (and limited to 32 GB). But the biggest gripe is - 32 GB of storage. Hands up everybody who reckons they can run Windows 7 in 32 GB. Wow! They'll be flying out the doors.

I want an ipad.... :-(

apple is just the best :-) hehehe

If that PC slate is not a copy of the ipad i dont know what is..... (started a war...) hehe

Just posted this somewhere else, then realised this may be a better place.

Just a quickie - what app(s) are folks using for editing? Photogene seems reasonable, but I suspect there may be a few that cover different things.

Also, Apple store online says 2-3 weeks for delivery of camera connection kit. However, I ordered one on Monday and got it today, so supply doesn't seem quite as constrained as most places/people would have you believe. They're probably just not making it through to the stores in any great quantity for some reason. So, please don't buy one from some pleb on eBay for £50, which is what people seem to be asking for them.

My camera kit arrived last week - I'd had it on order direct from Apple for about 3-4 weeks. The initial estimated shipping was end of August so I was pleasantly surprised. I guess they finally have some stock through!

Can I tether an Ipad to my Iphone (as long as I've upgraded my Iphone contract) ?

I can't see the point of not having 3G access, but I'm not going to take out another contract when I have it on the phone....

If you jailbreak your iPhone you can install MyWi which makes your iPhone into a WiFi hotspot that your iPad can then use. Works superbly, but the jailbreak vulnerability has just been closed by the latest OS update (4.0.2 I think) so if you're still on 4.0.1 then you can give it a go.

The latest version of Filterstorm is just out as well, and includes inbuilt FTP capability, metadata setup and various other improvements.

Well, the iPad is now officially for photography, its covered under my camera insurance. :D

If it helps, for the 3 apps I've used so far, the order of usefulness/coolness/functionality is

#1 Filterstorm - best by some margin
#2 Photogene - pretty good, lacking the level of functionality of Filterstorm
#3 Photoshop Express - basic quick & dirty by comparison to the other two

off to the apple shop to collect my ipad monday whoop!

So if you can link your iphone to your ipad... no need for the 3g model?

Even if you can't or don't want to link your iPhone and iPad then a myfi for £50 is cheaper and faster than the extra for a 3G iPad...

No unless you jailbreak your iPhone and install MyWi which males your iPhone into a wifi hotspot which your iPad (and anything else) can connect to. Very cool, but very annoying that Apple restrict this.

Ah cheers for the info guys! I may just have to look into this. Is the myfi a good fast connection then?

:D My loverly lady is in London today so I am really hoping they will have some camera connection kits in stock. I am planning to take it away on hols with us and use it to upload photos to my blog.

Any ideas for a linkup to wordpress? Presume FTP them from iPad then link to them from WP? Would ideally like a solution to upload to the Wordpress media section....?

Saw an I pad being used by one of the togs at thruxton last weekend.... Just perfect for him..... Dumped pictures to I pad and caught the drivers in the padock.... Hey I've got pictures of you....... Quick scan through and pictures sold. His comment to me was " you watch it will revolutionise pro togs work flow . I tend to agree great piece of kit

In which case I can't see me getting one. I can tether my phone to a laptop and it works fine, so not being able to do it with an Ipad is a major flaw, in my opinion.

I'm not going to take out yet another 3G contract. I'll just upgrade the laptop to a 15" MBP.
