iPad .. are you going to get one, and what for?

If I was made of money, I'd wait for the 3g model with GPS.

Why? It'd make an awesome in car entertainment system.

Spotify Running in the background
TomTom (on a 9" screen....nice, possibly distracting though)
And a nice movie player in case you have kids in the car.

However, when a $500 device is sold for £500 in the UK....no thanks!
 
To be quite honest... :suspect:

I don't need one (any more than I need to update my iPhone every year... :D)...

I (probably) don't even want one... well really... :suspect:

But, even at my age, I still get a big kick out of gadgets and inevitably the iPad falls into that broad category... :shrug:

So... just as inevitably... I will get one... :thinking: ...probably... ;)

...and I really would be astounded if any gadget from any company ticked all the boxes especially on its launch... :rules:

How would you suggest holding a touch screen tablet comfortable without inadvertently touching the touch screen?
 
I heard the RAM was at least 512. The thing I'm more excited about is the iPhone OS 4 release coming around 8th April. That is exciting.

I'm not sure about the iPad. I think it's kind of cool but the only thing I'd use it for is as a presentation device. My iPhone does everything my netbook used to do so I don't need a replacement. I'm also interested in seeing what the likes of HP and Microsoft have to offer. I can't help but feel a lot of people going for the iPad will regret it when they see what the competitors will be offering. Apparently 74% of people who bought the iPad in the States already own an iPhone, according to the Guardian. Also the 300,000 shipped doesn't mean bought. It means 300,000 shipped to retail outlets. There could be 100,000 sitting on shelves for all we know. Are there any official sales figures out yet?

Nope, iPhone OS4 is being announced on April 8th. It's not due to be released until late June / early July when the iPhone 4G is released.

Just because of this comment of yours, I'm now all the curious as to how sweet a monkey's fart is :p! But, I'd rather stick my fingers all over an iPad than my nose up a monkey's arse just to smell its' gas-leaks.

I'm just wondering if it would be worth getting the SIM version, or just do with the WiFi one :shrug: Also, it helps to see others go ahead on a frenzy buying it, irons out any anomalies.

I guess early May will be when I get myself to order :) ... if I can hold off long enough.

I agree with this TBH, the form factor (small, lightweight media devices with mobile OSs) is growing on me slightly, I just don't think, with a laptop and various other devices the cost of this new device is going to be it's downfall. Obviously there will be people that want devices like this instead of a laptop say (and have a desktop for their main needs). I just don't think there will be a huge market for devices such as this, unless they become a lot cheaper and more "disposable" (ie each family will have a couple lying around that you can use randomly, but cheap enough to not really worry about).

I'd also suggest the full OS slates are very different. Yes they have the same form factor but they have totally different OSs and totally different hardware and I think they will fit a different nische.

Typical Apple, instead of making something work with existing networks they suggest you change your network to work with the iPad...:lol:

However as I pointed out earlier this may be due to the aluminium back and i'm pretty sure the first iPhone had the same issue. Could be a bit costly if Apple allow returns (which I doubt, it's not a major issue).

I so want to like Apple products, the iPad for example is a beautiful machine, however they always have to **** it up!

The process of getting your own files onto the iPad so that they can be used with specific apps is without a doubt one of our least favorite parts of the iPad experience. The device's focus—at least at launch—is so squarely on selling you files directly from content providers and developers, that official support for users actually putting their own data onto the device is extremely rudimentary and restricted.

So as usual Apple cripple their mobile devices with a painful syncing experience. Why can they not follow other manufacturers and allow drag and drop, it works with most/all other manufacturers and there is no problem with getting the right files to show up with the right programs and you don't have to install about half a dozen programs to sync a single device!:cuckoo:
 
I would want to use it as a lightweight portable device for holidays/weekends away in order to stay in touch. But I would also want to use a keyboard/mouse when back home. Problem is you can pair to a BT keyboard but no mouse - WHY ?

That plus no flash (I guess to stop 'unofficial' games/apps) just wrecks it.
 
I'm interested in getting one and getting into developing iPad applications. Whether you like it or not, touch screen is the area in which personal computing is moving into, and in the next 10 years will probably overtake the mouse/keyboard as the most common input method.

Computers are very complex machines, I think we can all understand why someone would be reluctant to ditch 80% of what they know about operating a computer and starting fresh with something like the iPad. But the potential the iPad (and similar devices that I'm sure will be released in the next 6-12 months) to redefine personal computing as we know it is quite exciting.
 
I am looking forward to the "ipad clones" that will be coming now this is out. I won't be buying one, I hate being restricted (I didn't get an iphone).

A £200 Netbook can multitask, but not this £500 (minimum probably) device. :thumbsdown:

I don't think Apple fully finished this part of the software before being released (the Ars review mentions it was added very late into the beta stage of the SDK). Hopefully Apple will improve upon this in OS 4.0 or the new OS version will allow services such as Dropbox to integrate into the iPhone OS and allow you to sync local files with those in the cloud.

The iPhone OS doesn't understand the concept of a mouse, the entire UI is designed around touch.

Also, why would you want to use a mouse when you have a 10" multitouch screen? I'm sure it's a muscle memory reflex you would quickly lose and you'll quickly see how better touch is.

A lot of Flash games wouldn't work on a touchscreen, and many websites have started replacing their Flash based video players with HTML5. I don't think the lack of Flash is a big an issue as the press have made it out to be.

The iPad (and all iPhone/iTouchs) can multitask, just not 3rd party apps (yet).

Clones? Most that are coming out in the near future were on dislpay before the iPad was announced, if anything the iPad is a clone of those devices.:lol:

True, it did read a little like that, however I still think even a file manager in the device is a must, and this is what Apple insist on cutting. Unless you can download and copy whatever files you want too and from the device (I mean compatable files from multiple sources) it's just too flawed. I haven't tried android yet so have no idea if it has the same problems but WinMo has a basic file manager (and allows drag and drop from a computer/downloads) and it's very useful (even if a bit difficult because of it's small icon sizes). You don't need to access it all the time but you can move things around if needed.

I read an interesting article about just this the other day. I'd never really thought about the lack of being able to hover over a flash program that is the major issue. An issue sorted by a couple of devices with a small optical mouse, however I doubt it would sort the issue fully.

Are they out yet? No, hence clone :P Whichever way, I would love an ipad but with an operating system that I can do what I want, install what I want, run what I want. For now, I am keeping my netbook.
 
Wifi issues, a censored application platform (they don't let through applications they don't like, ugh), and finally a lack of multi-tasking.

I think I'll pass.

i know, I prefer things that are more simple and easy to use. I'm sure that tablet will be great and do loads more stuff. So if thats what you want I can see why you would wait for it.

For most of us we just want something simple to watch movies, browse the net and look at pics.
 
I think you're all being quite harsh on Apple here! They've released the world's first tablet that's sold a significant number! Other manufacturers have release lots of concept photos and prototypes, but none have got one in production, and I don't think any are near production.

It's not the hardware that's special here, its just a 10" screen bolted to a pumped up iPhone CPU with two huge batteries. It's the software that'll make a difference, and that's the reason why Apple is so far ahead of it's competitors, even Android.

It's okay, Windows 7 Phone will be joining iPhone OS soon in not having 3rd party multitasking :bonk:. Hopefully iPhone OS 4.0 will introduce some sort of multitasking, and Apple have historically been good with supporting old hardware with new software updates.

Some yes, however there were full working releasable models of others previewed (Ie not some mockups) at the beginning of January, a few weeks before the iPad was shown. Hence the iPad is just a clone of the other devices.;)

I agree about the latter too, which is why I'm so interested in the Hanvon (and similar devices), something with most of the ability of a netbook byt smaller (for photography uses).

WP7s looks really nice, however it has some issues, just like the iPhone software, which is a shame and probably why i'll either stick with WM6.x and/or android.

The courier is something really exciting, however I don't know how useful it would be, except possibly for business use.

I don't care for the "no"; I believe there are close to 6 Billion people on this planet, most of whom will not be buying an iPad. I am not being disrespectful to the majority of these people, but this is not what I'm after! To narrow that down further, 20000 members here! I don't want to hear the "no" from the 20000 members!

If you've so much as done a simple search, you will see that other threads of the nature Apple Good vs. Apple Bad, etc. gets locked down!

Also, as I've posted a specific subject for this thread, I believe it is rightfully to keep the thread specific to the subject at hand; and not digress into other matters of "free" choice!

This is an open forum, if you have a topic, iPad, iPaq, or anything else for that matter and is not addressed in my query then why are you posting here?

you asked in your thread title "are you getting an ipad" you cant then stipulate that you dont want to hear no's.

you shpuld have asked "those people who are buying ipads, why are you buying them?"

more to the point though, why do you care why people are buying them? you dont need convincing yourself so what will you do with the knowledge you gain?
