There has already been a few threads on this latest Apple gizmo, but I was curious to see if anyone was keen on getting one, and if so then for what use?

Please, I don't want to sound too rude, but I am not interested in reading the pros. vs. cons of this latest toy; nor am I interested in reading what other devices can / cannot do for more / less money!

Simply, if you are thinking of buying an iPad, what makes you want one and how do you plan on using it.

Personally, I can't wait for it to arrive. I've missed the form, size and amazing functionality of the Newton (for its' time, it was way ahead of anything else out there).

It would be wonderful for short trips where I don't want to lug a full notebook, for when in bed and reading (I'm in bed more often than I care, due to ill health), for taking to workshops to show examples of some work I've done etc.

It seems just the right form, size and feature for what I've wanted.

Personally, if they're porting iWork and Bento then that's a good start; of course it does come with an Internet browser too. So, that's most of what I need.

Now, if they do a Lightroom Light (LRl) for this, then I'd be drooling all the way to the store and back :)

The price of an entry level laptop.

I have no idea what the prices will be, chances are I'll be getting it from the US since I am not too sure if they'll be made available in Saudi

I've tried the iPhone, and every time I used it I got flashbacks to the Newton; the only thing was that the screen was a bit too small for my liking.

Waiting to see it in the shops in April & the apps for it, but certainly interested

nope, can't be arsssed to keep holding it up - and the border is to thick (spoils it)

Nope, I want a modbook instead :)

I thought of this a while back, but they're a bit too much of a niche market, and bulky  compared to the iPad

I am not going to be getting one, as I don't really see a gap for in between my iPhone and MacBook. I guess it would fit between a desktop computer and an iPhone, but I tend to take my laptop with me most places for Lightroom. I did read somewhere that the iPad would support raw files though.

I think after the shiny new gadget halo has worn off a bit, it will be people like my Mum, who just want to browse the internet occasionally and check emails that it will be best suited to. With it being a locked down system there is less for them to worry about it will be quick to boot up and everything should just work.

I thought of getting something like this for my father; but with his ageing eyes he'd need something closer to 21" to allow him to magnify the text to a readable size and for doing without much scrolling :shake:

I'm definately interested. I like that it's always on like a mobile phone, no waiting for it to boot up. I'm interested in it primarily as a web-surfing device, it would be far more convinient than waiting for a laptop/PC to boot up just to check e-mails/MyFace etc and save a lot of wear and tear on my MacBook - the missus is switching it on and off every 15 bloody minutes just to stare at MyFace for 5 mins which DRIVES ME NUTS!

Quite by chance (as lucky as in tomorrow is Thursday) I am shortly in the US. I am really looking forward to buying an iPad, but pretty sad that I allowed myself to be caught in the self-induced hype. I think that it will be great as a Netbook, probably will replace my eReader, act as an external storage device for my photos whilst out and be very pretty to see them on immediately. As for apps - iWorks will be useful - great for presentation design in front of the telly. And if anyone tells you that it will not catch on and be (the most) popular Apple device apart from the iPhone (and then maybe even over the iPhone eventually) get them to place odds.

I'm looking forward to it even though it's received quite a lot of bad reviews. I would mainly use it for browsing and reading eBooks. I have really become attached to my iPhone and this would be an welcomed addition. Having said that, I'm curious to try out Microsoft Courier.

I thought about getting one to keep the wifey away from my macbook when we're away from home (which is most of the time). Trouble is, she hogs the macbook to faff around with facebook games which won't run of the iPad :(

I don't really see myself with one of these tbh, iPhone does everything i want away from the pc..I am however anxiously waiting for the new MacBooks to be announced, I'll most likely be getting one.

I'm 99% convinced that I'll get one as soon as it comes out for a few reasons.

My laptop is getting rather old and could do with replacing. The battery has already given up and the wireless connectivity is on the blink on a semi-regular basis - rather a pain. I recently bought myself an ipod touch almost exclusively for web surfing at home and I love it. Its nippy enough for most uses and the touchscreen is far easier to use than the trackpad on the laptop. The only problem with it is the lack of processing power and a fairly small screen.

I can see why a lot of people are calling the ipad a blown up ipod touch, but for that would be perfect for me. It will be easier to read and use and otherwise act in exactly the same way as what I've already got.

So long as the basic wifi model becomes available at a 'reasonable' cost, and reviews by our US friends doesn't throw up any major shortcomings, I'll get one ordered within the first couple of weeks I reckon.

Nope, I want a modbook instead :)

I like the idea of the modbook, but it's just a bit too big for something I'd want if for. It's a similar size to my laptop so just as bulky. A nice 10" ish version however would be great, which is why I'm so interested in the Win 7 Slates coming out.

I love that, however haven't heard anything since around September. :(

Also OP why the curb on nto talking about other similar devices? There is such a thing as choice in this world, and most people like to have a look at a few similar devices before choosing.

As for an iPad like device (neither of the other two are) I think i'll wait and see how the Norton Ink compares before I consider any of them.:)

The modbook is basically a 13" macbook bottom bit with a screen where the keyboard should be so it is basically a little thinner than a normal macbook. The modbook pro is hideous though!

I know. :)

I have a 13" XPS at the moment so it's slightly thinner and lighter than the macbook (or it was last time I checked) but it's still too big for something I'd want to lug around in a backpack or hold in my hand. Make a 10 inch modbook (with digitizer for pen use) and i'd be sold. :D

Yes will probably get one for my wife. Were an apple house here so it will go well with the Macbook Pro and iPhones :D

I can get a iMac then for me so she can use the ipad for internet jaz while I enjoy iMac goodness!

It's Saturday ... are you waiting in queue to get one?

I wanted to suggest why not get two, and then saw your next post :p; good thinking there.

....

I can see why a lot of people are calling the ipad a blown up ipod touch, but for that would be perfect for me. It will be easier to read and use and otherwise act in exactly the same way as what I've already got.

A "blown up ipod touch" is exactly what I want, and many too it seems.

Add the great battery life, the newly ported applications, and it will be just ideal. It's like having to scratch that itch finally :)

The modbook is basically a 13" macbook bottom bit with a screen where the keyboard should be so it is basically a little thinner than a normal macbook. The modbook pro is hideous though!

I always floated the idea of the modbook in my mind. Having used a Toshiba 12.1" Tablet (sold it here on TP) I felt a tablet with keyboard to be too heavy for true hand-held use; also, it was too bulky and heavy to carry on short trips (same weight as a true laptop but with lesser functionality). Hence the modbook was ideal in that it was a true full fledged laptop without the keyboard, lighter, and touch screen. But still, that 13" display makes it too big for travel, may as well get the MacBook Air

And there is an idea, if they can shoehorn the MacBook Air into a modbook air, then that'll be a much lighter package

The iPad will allow me to do without the need for a Netbook (thought of buying one for long photography escapades to dump the pictures out of CF and for quick viewing), Digital Picture Frame (thought of buying one to showcase some of my work to my mum, dad, daughter etc.), iPod Touch (had the iPhone, but was too big as a phone and want something for movie, media viewing and playback, and light surfing, while in bed on the plane etc.).

I am sure someone will come-up with a way to plug in USB drives to it; and that will give it immediate TB of data access / storage.

A waterproof casing, so I can use it in the pool & bathtub :cuckoo:

I'm not too sure at the moment. Maybe wait a few months and see what apps and extras come out. I'm still quite happy with my iPhone

Just wish it had Flash!!

Completely agree

When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge, but only when it's in sleep mode. Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.

Most? They mean old, I don't think any PC has been released with "standard" USB (aka USB 1.0) ports for years (considering new ones are starting to come with USB3)! Nice bit of Apple marketing there...

Having said that didn't Apple have problems with the 2g iPhone for similar reasons? Metal back shielding the wifi. I wouldn't be to suprised if the next version came out with a plastic back (or like one of the new HTC android phones unibody aluminium with a plastic bit in it).

No great deal either way TBH for those that want one, the former is a bit of an issue but the latter is pretty standard for high draw USB charging devices, some phones have the same problem.

Yep article in The Times today about alot of people having major Wi-Fi issues in the USA. Apparently it has poor reception and is thought to be hardware rather than software. But then they sold 300,000 in ONE DAY in the USA so I rekon they might be quick to fix the issue!

I was going to buy one on release but working on the basis that the UK variants are probably already on the boat I might hold back a few weeks.

I'm very interested but in no huge rush.

Going to wait for the OS 4 announcemnt on the 8th, see what they are providing in the summer this year.

Quite interested in the 3g variant, but annoyed that they're using the micro sim rather than a full size sim. Apparantly O2 and Orange are buying bulk loads of these blank sims, maybe they're going to offer the ipad on contract?

There are sites that allege that the micro sim is exactly the same as the normal sim, all you need to do is cut down your normal SIM. Anyone fancy giving it a try?

Would never want or need one. It's a large iphone without the phone bit.. Logistics of it will be a nightmare, screen will be damaaged easily as there is no lid and if you drop it, the chances of catching it are close to impossible.

Get yourself a square plate and imagine it's an Ipad. Sit in a chair and use it like a laptop..how are you going to see the screen and sit comfortably!! Forget about the software and how sexy it may or may not look and think about the practicality of using it.

Have you used one? I find it funny people who have never used a device to be able to be so critical of it.
