iPad Apps and Updates Thread

You sure it doesn't allow you to publish magazines :lol::lol:

Anyone found an app that'll allow me to Remote Desktop onto my Windows 7 PC at home?

As well as log me in, you could use teamviewer. Although not an ipad specific app (yet), works as well as LMI but FREE :) There is also the pro version at £59.99 but it's not needed ;)

Wish they'd hurry up and sort out this OS update with multitasking!

iPad feels like half a device without a decent IM client.

Have you tried this:

BeejiveIM - £3.49 - Best messenger app out there, it even stays log in when you exit, and push any messages like a text message on an iPhone onscreen to tell you that you got a message while you are in another app. Which you can choose to ignore or go to BeeJive to continue the conversation.

im using IM+. It also stays logged in when you log out and you get alerts when messages are sent to you even though yuo are using another app.

My favourite apps so far

Airvideo - amazing video streamer from my imac to the ipad - works over 3g surprisingly well

kindle - £11 for a book on i-store, same book on Kindle US $5

pages - The only one in the suite I bought and works really well

Elements - I wish I could say this was for my kids but the nerd in me loves it

Corkulous - I use it as a fun to do list, 7 year old loves to make his own pin board

Angry Birds HD- 9 year old loves it, I've not played with it much

Pinball HD - great fun

The Times - £10 for a month aint cheap but it's a lovely way to read the paper

Egg Boiler - 59p for perfect eggs every time

Goodreader - good (free) reader

FTPonthego - can make changes to a remote webpage from ipad

scoot - find local businesses

Accuweather - great weather app and free

National Geog. World atlas - what it says on the tin

Virtuoso - piano keyboard (free)

N.O.V.A. - not bad 1st person shooter

FlickStackr - good flickr browser

Flixster - Where is the nearest cinema showing a certain movie. Very cool app.

wikipanion - nice interface for everybody's favourite free encyclopedia

I've used these on iPhone and iPad...eBuddy/IM+ etc. It's really not an acceptable solution.

Just need the multi-tasking update to have a proper background IM app...not one you have to relaunch every two hours to keep push notifications and then sit watching while it logs in and retrieves the messages.

IM+ 2hr thing is ONLY skype.. it keeps you logged in to google talk, msn, etc for 7 days without you opening the app once. I would suggest that if no one sends you a message in 7 days you probably dont need instant messanging anyway! :)

Am looking for a decent way of organising photos into separate folders - tried a couple of apps (Photo Sort currently OK but hate the lag as pics come into sharpness) Is there a way of organising though Photos folder without having an app? I use a PC so iPhoto is a non sarter, and I do not have PS Elements.

Spooks

I am using Lightroom 3 to created published collections, by syncing the directory they are all in, each published collection (or smart collection, 4*+ family photos in 2010 for example) appears as an album.

This has potential - I am using LR 2 but am assuming this must still be possible. Trying to get my head around what you are syaing but have already done an 11 hour day and got 4 more to go before I get home - it may be that I ask for further details on this.

Cheers

I had an older version of that for LR2, although as it didn't have publish collection features I needed to do it manually. I had collections for each genre of photos I wanted on my phone and every so often I exported them using a preset I'd set up (iPhone screen res, to the folder iTunes watches for photos).

Got this sorted. Many thanks for the help. Who needs aps?

Photo fx Ultra - very useful

TiltShiftGen - lots of fun effects

Informant HD - to do/task manager

Osmos HD - brilliant, absorbing gameplay

Evernote - superb for grabbing data/docs etc

MobileTV - free Sky Sports on the iPad 'til Jan 2011, if you have the sports package

Flipboard - Free and supremely delectable 'socialising' magazine... ...stunning operation and totally customisable Front Page... :D

A totally refreshing way to view Facebook, Twitter and loads of other stuff... :geek:

It is what iPads were made for... :rules:

In their own words...

Flipboard is the world's first social magazine. Your Flipboard is a fast, beautiful way to flip through news, photos and updates your friends are sharing on Facebook and Twitter. And it’s an incredible place to discover fresh content from around the Twittersphere.

Linky to their web site > Flipboard homepage

Linky to the app > Flipboard app

AND... ...it looks absolutely bloody stunning on the iPad... ...I'm in love all over again for the zillionth time... :naughty: ...this month...

EDIT... and don't forget to watch the short vid on the web site for a tantalising glimpse before you Download... :D

It's not an app, but does anybody else here use tvcatchup?

http://ipad.tvcatchup.com/

I've used it On my iPhone for the past year, and it's great on the iPad.
You'll need wifi or 3G, and it works great.

I'm flicking between this forum and Total recall right now

TVCatchup is certainly very useful on both iPad and iPhone... recommended...

And... I really enjoy the FryPaper too... ...although Stephen does not post that often what he does is first class imhgo... :D

And... for instant messaging of most major kinds give IM+ Lite a whirl... a super flexible friend and also excellent for the Twitterati and FaceBookers as well as having access to its own web page facility in programme...

IM+ LITE - Social Networking = Free App Store Linky AND Web Site

There is a paid version too but apart from losing the adverts that are not so annoying I can't really see the justification for the £5.99 price tag tbh... :suspect:

You can also get an in-app Voice Recognition pack for £0.59 if you really want... :D

It is also available for my iPhone 4...

Www.teamviewer.com install it on your pc, set it to always be visible and set your own password. Go to the app store, find teamviewer and job done.

Can I ask, does the Ipad have "SatNav", similar to the Iphone, and if so, does it need 3G to make it work ?

(It will make a fantastic SatNav screen in the car)

Only the 3G version includes a GPS chip which you really would need for sat-nav.

Not purchased one yet. Saw it on launch day and was given conflicting info by staff so decided to wait, since then not got round to looking again till now.

Can I ask a couple of questions?

I have a lot of books for my Sony ereader in PDF format which I have stored on my PC using Calibre. Would I be able to transfer these onto the Ipad?

Also is there a way of buying new books for less than what Amazon/Waterstones are currently charging?

I have a 3GS and have been given conflicting advice as to whether if jail broken I could use this as a modem, saving on another contract. Anyone know if this is possible?

Thanks

Car mounting kits are available... ...there is a linky on the Co-Pilot site under their faqs... :D

:p

Yeah - I know it can be done - just not sure about doing it. It would have to be a very secure mount as most of the phone ones vibrate and this is much heavier.

Also, I can't find anywhere in my car that I wouldn't be blocking out some sort of control :bonk::bonk:

I'm sure I could mount it on the passenger side of the car.

So, if it "needs" 3G to work as a SatNav, best I don't utilise it in Europe then ????

Yes, you can either use the free iBooks app on the iPad and transfer the pdf files on via iTunes

Or, you can use the excellent GoodReader for iPad which handles the pdf files better, has more features and opens/navigates the files quicker.

You can use the iBooks store app to purchase books, or the Kindle app to allow you to purchase books through the amazon kindle store - or you can find thousands of free 'out of print' ebooks online.

No, it doesn't need 3G to work as a satnav. It's just that it's only the 3G models that include the GPS chip.

Ashphalt 5. Great driving sim where you steer just tilting the iPad. £3.99

Yes, i use SB settings, a simple swipe accross the top of the screen brings up brightness, turn bluetooth on or off, wifi etc.

You must have jailbroke first though.

GEEK...

Never had you down as a techno-geek Cedric... :D

They are a dream though aren't they... :geek:

:p

I'm a real saddo for gadgetry I'm afraid Rog - total anorak.

Much as I hate aiding Steve Jobs in his mission to take over the world, I must admit the iPad is fantastic. If I was still doing the wedding togging, what a fantastic bit of kit to show clients example work etc. and the battery life is just great.

OK - how do I get out of jail?

not allowed to discuss methods Cedric.

Have you updated your iPad to the newest version of OS?
