iPad and Photography - what are my options?

Hi all,

I bought an Ipad 2 about 6 months ago, and tbh I dont use it anything like I should. It gets used maybe once to twice a month for playing Bejewelled Blitz on and maybe going on Flickr... but other than that it remains on the table top doing naff all.

I keep seeing people posting about using their iPad inline with photography... and I wondered exactly what can be done?

Im clueless at the moment, so anything would be helpful here.

Im thinking:
  1. photo backup while out and about
  2. RAW viewing / editing?
  3. card reader?
Is any of that possible?

For instance, the other week I was away doing a 2 day shoot at Glencoe. It would have been really useful if I could have taken the iPad, and at lunchtime been able to download the photos off my cam onto it and have a flick through them - is this possible?

Im a bit useless when it comes to iTunes.
The iPad is synced with home PC. If I was out and about, such as this week, sat in a hotel room, and I take some photos on my SLR - and then want to take them into work the next day with me on the iPad - how would I do this?
I was thinking I could process the images on my laptop, then connect my iPad to the laptop and sync across the new images... but having just tried that it has wiped my entire iPad of all its music and everything - and I cant get that stuff back because it is stored on my home PC which is 200mi away at home lol..

Any help much appreciated!!

Have a chat with someone that works in an apple store they will show or tell you best as they will be able to show you hands on, as for downloading files to look at on your iPad whilst out shooting it is possible check this link ...

If you buy this or the official apple copy I have (don't bother spending the extra money) it will allow you to download your images into the photos folder on your home screen and flick through them zoom in etc. also you can get photoshop for iPad if you want very basic editing etc. hope this helped but defos visit an apple store for the best advice describing things online can be confusing If you read it wrong or press a wrong button.
 
That will plug into the sync port an using your camera USB lead it will transfer the files to your iPad in the format you shot them so if you shoot raw they will e copied in raw and if shot in jpeg it will transfer as a jpeg but yes thats what you need :)
 
Yup I have that connector that jameshobson posted, and you can either put SD cards in directly or connect a camera through USB. I mostly use Snapseed and Filterstorm Pro for editing photos.

Big RAW files from your 5D II would be a bit slow to use IME.

Filterstorm I think also allows you to import photos using dropbox etc which would allow you to get them off the laptop without syncing via itunes.
 
Thanks for the replies so far guys :) I have just ordered 2 of those USB connectors, hopefully that will allow me to take my iPad away with me and go through my photos on it, rather than needing to take my laptop everytime just to view them.

Any other tips for anything you can do with an iPad relating to photography?
 
At Focus on Imaging, I noticed that someone giving a talk on Photoshop, was using a Ipad to hold all of the Photoshop Tools as a second screen.
 
Wow, you only use your iPad once or twice a month?! I use mine every single day, for lots of different things. It goes with me everywhere.

I don't use it for lots of photography stuff though; but you should check out Snapseed by Nik Software. It's a nice little app for adjustments (basically a stripped down version of their full suite of plugins).

With regards to syncing, you can set up your iPad to sync everything wirelessly.
 
Haha I know, I need to use it more, I love it, but cant find a use for it other than browsing interweb and Bejewelled Blitz! Mine is the non 3G version, so maybe that somewhat limits its usefulness also...

Could you elaborate on the syncing wirelessly... I understand the idea but wouldn't my home PC need to be turned on in order for it to sync with that? And how would I add new photos to my laptop itunes and then sync them onto my iPad without losing all the data synced with my home PC?

One other thing : The SnapSeed - does this read RAW files?
 
I use a camera connection kit and the Snapspeed app most of the time. The majority of this set were edited directly on the iPad from Raw files from my 40d;

I also use the Dropbox, Flickr, Talkphotography, AVForums and 100 Cameras apps as well. I'm also using the iPad to edit/create my 366 photos this year!

Thank you for the link :) Some good shots there and incredible to think the iPad processed those...

Is there any way of getting the iPad to only download the JPEGS off the card, rather than RAWs? Im thinking if I shoot in RAW + small JPEG, and use the iPad to view the photos to ensure ive nailed focus/ exposure it would be really handy. But I wouldnt necesserily want the full RAW file, just a small quick JPEG

Thanks. The iPad can't act as a liveview using the usb cable but you can use an eye-fi card and their app to send images to the iPad directly from your camera via a WiFi connection. I believe you can configure the client to just send the jpg image and write the raw file to the card in camera.

Sorry for all the questions, but thank you for the help :)

Is it possible to use eyefi whilst out on the move (away from any wireless networks) and transmit images to your iPad?
I have read about this but it mentioned jailbreaking the iPad and getting MyWi - something which I am not prepared to do.

The eyefi idea is great, but is there a way the eyefi card OR iPad can host its own wireless network for the file transfer?
 
No problem! The newest version of the eye-fi card and iPad app setup their own virtual wireless access point so can work independently of a WiFi network.

The problem you had with syncing is that on the pc you should have set it to manually manage the connection. If you don't use iTunes for any other device on that computer you could simply set iTunes to never start when the iPad is connected. To transfer the files off you go into the iPad drive within 'my computer' rather than doing it through iTunes.

You can show the pictures directly using the standard photos app but you do have to import them first. Mine shows the canon raw files fine. You can always delete the photos you don't want off the iPad directly.

I mostly use mine for viewing the pictures before I get home. I can edit in snapseed and email a jpeg if I want to sent if off quick. For the proper editing I wait till I get home and use Lightroom.

I believe using the iPad as an addition screen requires windows 7 on a pc. My old notebook still runs vista otherwise it is something I would do.

To use the wireless sync with iTunes the pc and iPad need to be on the same local network.
 
Not sure if it's already been suggested as I've just had a real quick flick thru the posts but I'd definitely use an iPad {if i had one} for a digital portfolio. Perhaps create an interesting & original personalised display of your work that'd attract potential clients & whatnot? I'm not sure what retouching photographs in Photoshop via an iPad is like but it's definitely worth a look into? Make the most of what you have :} Best wishes.
 
If you use Lightroom consider looking at Photosmith, it's essentially a Lightroom companion app for the iPad. When in away I download my cards to the iPad, then can get started on adding meta data etc to files before then syncing back to my Lightroom catalogue.
 
I went to Bath last week and saw someone with an iPad2 taking photos with it.....it was a nice bright day but really :)
Although the new one has a much better camera on it so won't be too bad for taking pics.

I do like everyone else and download my photos onto them before either printing or editing in snap seed or the new iPhoto that came out last week isn't bad.
 
Any one have any updates on this situation? It would be great to have wired or wireless control of the canon cameras via an ipad. Anything like the Sofortbild app knocking about for the canons?

Shooting wildlife and having remote wireless control of the camera in the field via a tablet (pref ipad) is something I've been looking into but coming up short. Any information or recommendations would be fantastic.
 
Several guys in our club use the ipad to link wirelessly to their cameras using appropriate software. The Acer 500 is also used this way. As they shoot, the image come up on the ipad in seconds. Ideal to show clients at a shoot as they happen and to review the shots rather than look at the camera.
 
eye-fi card. I love mine. Was doing a series of shots at the weekend when i was out in the car. the temperature in edinburgh was about 3 degrees so once i had taken a series of shots i went back into the car and reviewed them all on the ipad.
 
Do any of these options you've mentioned allow you to control the camera in the same way you can using live view?
 
The only thing I use my iPad for is as an electronic portfolio. The thought of editing on a 9" uncalibrated screen with no accurate input device makes me shudder.

I'm trying to see if anyone has used a canon & iPad paired together to act as a remote live view screen with all the functionality of live view. Nikon users have a solution available to them via Sofortbild. It would be really useful to find an equivalent for canon.

you can but it's rather expensive set up £250 ish. google or search the app store for cam ranger

If you also have an iPhone why not set up a personal hotspot
With iPad/iPhone
Then install logmein this allows you to access your desktop on your home pc from anywhere on you IPad screen
So in theory you could you any program that's on you pc

I hAve not used this for photography, but have used this setup with my ham radio station working remote from my iPhone
Even used skype for the audio

Best bit is it's all free ;-)

I don't have a 3G iPad either but I use mine for hours each day. I read books and newspapers on it, browse the net, including Talk Photography and check emails, as well as play the odd game. It's also got my calendar on it and reminders.

For photography, I backup my SD cards when I'm away (I think these are jpegs though, not RAW). It allows you to share your photos online too, before you've got home as long as you've got wi fi. (I don't edit photos on my iPad). I've got my camera manuals downloaded onto it. I take notes on my iPhone at the camera club and sync these with the iPad.
I also use the notepad to note down camera/equipment/settings info and add stuff to my wish list :)
 
Anyone used DSLR remote on the Nikons? Work well?

That onOne software looks good! I was going to get a 6D purely for the wifi in the Studio or on locations to review certain shoots in real time but I don't really need it now if that 25quid bit of software works as it says. Only bummer, from what I can gather, is that it requires you to have the camera connected to a computer via USB and the computer connected via wifi to the ipad/ipod touch/iphone and I really only wanted to have the ipad and camera if on location....might still get a 6D or try the eye-fi card and cf adaptor route... :thinking:
