Going to buy my wife an ipad for her birthday later this month can anyone advice which ipad they think would be suitable for her out of 32gb with wifi or the 64gb without wifi both are £599 so price wise makes no difference. She uses her ipod mainly for a few games and about 80 tunes grateful for any help

Do you mean with 3G Bob? All iPads are wifi enabled...

If so - does/would she use email/internet/downloading tunes a lot away from the house/away from where she can get Wifi? Does she already have an internet enabled phone? If the answers are yes to the first and no to the second then I would definitely look at getting the 3G version.

By the sound of her expected useage it is a split down the middle between out and about browsing and having more space so she can load pictures, apps and tunes etc. All boils down to how much it would be used when away from the house such as on holiday, in town etc etc.

If she only uses it for a limited number of songs, then surely you could go for a 16GB 3G and save yourself a bundle?

If its only used around the house then you don't even need the 3G. I've got a 16GB, with a few photos, a small collection of apps and a couple of hundred tracks I've only used 3.5GB out of the 14 or so available.

Sorry yes its the 3g I was thinking of It would get a fair amount of use out of the house as we are always at the hospitals with the kids as they need to be seen weekly or go in for a day or two every month so over night stays it would come in handy I was thinking of 32gb so she could put a film on it as well as music and aps

Have a think on it. Even several full length films won't (quite) fill a 16GB though I guess you might get tight if you start to put lots and lots of music on there as well.

Just me not wanting to spend money when I don't have to!

It sounds as though you've answered your own question here, but don't forget to factor in the ongoing costs of the 3G contract.

I wasnt sure if the 32 would hold a film aswell as everthing thats why I asked but looks as though 32 will be ok I will check onging costs now see how much the total bill will be can she tranfer any music and aps she has on her ipod across or do you have to buy again
Bob

Nope you wont have to buy it again - all purchases can be synced with the ipad straight from her library.

Thanks looks like Im on my way to the apple store in Manchester tomorrow hope my credit card can take the shock

I have the 64gb NO 3g, as the store were out of 32 with 3g. On holiday it would have been nice to have 3g, but aside from that week it has not left the house. If it does it would only be a day here or there, and paying for service would be expensive for how much I use. If I am desperate I can use my iphone.

If she would only need 3g the odd day I would avoid that. A 16gb would do, although the 32gb at £70 more is good value.

I read on another thread that there is a better deal with Tmobile. You get a sim from them, top up £20, then send a text fr a code that gives you ultd internet for 6 months. You'll have to chop it down to micro sim size, but thats still pretty good. If only I wasn't on contract!!

I am with T mobile for my phone might be worth checking them out thanks for that

My ipad advice? - buy an iphone and hold it near to your face.

Voila.

hi vodafone do a good deal - £10 a month and you can end contract any time you like rather than be tied in. My sis has one and the 3g is faster than you expect. she loves the ibooks app.

Regarding the 3G SIM, I was given to believe that the iPad would work without it, yet when I connected up to iTunes for the first time, it would not appear to let me get anywhere with synching etc before I put the SIM in. I don't know if it was my fault (probably was). Perhaps someone will pitch in with a definitive answer.

It might be better, therefore, to get the SIM sorted out sooner rather than later.

My iPad advice?
Don't waste your money.

It's an oversized iphone with no keyboard, no flash, and no multitasking.
And an iphone is just an ipod touch with the abili..... wait no. It sucks at making phone calls too.

If she is only using it for media, I would suhhest getting her an ipod touch instead.
If you need tablet/slate function for whatever reason, hold off for the new wave of Android tablets coming very soon. Everything a iPad does, and more. (and easier on the pocketbook)

Not an Apple fan then ?

I got my Mrs a Sony Netbook at Xmas, which she used 'occasionally'.

As it was getting so little use i sold it to work ;) and bought her an iPad which has been HAMMERED and gets used every night.

It boots instantly, has great battery life and does what she wants (Pictures / Music / Facebook / Browsing / Email), so its a winner in our house.

Its horses for courses though - you need to examine what you would use it for and then make an informed decision - they will not suit everyone.

Fair enough Chaz! :)

They do have a camera connection kit available so you can dowload from sd cards or connect direct to camera via USB adapter to get pics from a CF.

well the guy in Exeter store did not say this also the memory is so small, and I guess shooting teathered is out as well oh and I have CF cards lol

Just another useless bit of kit for the ever hungry iSheep.
When it naively supports flash, expandable memory, and multitasking, I might give it a go. But by then the Android market of tablets will be in full force, and HP will probably have another slate (that actually works).
I almost bought one for the portability, but I couldn't justify the lack of basic functions. For the same price I picked up a 15" notebook that does everything I need and more. Even runs ce5 flawlessly, adding practical business function.
Sure, the battery life isn't as good, and it a bit more bulky, bit you can't exactly put an iPad in your pocket, so you need some kind of bag/ case for it. And a laptop is just as easy to carry in a backpack.

For your information they have just started making suit jackets with iPad sleeves in the inner lining :P
Just lkie the same pocket style as a mobile/ wallet pocket on the inside of a suit :)

I think a lot of people see (and criticise) the iPad as being a poor notebook. That isn't the market they were aiming for with it. Sure it wasn't an existing market but they have found an awesome niche to deliver media instantly and have made a superb device for me to use alongside my laptop.

The 3G won't sync without the sim, but the actual iPad will work, so you can do wifi, download apps, use iBooks and all that. I got my 3G the day before I went on holiday with no sim, so was able to play with it but couldn't use it properly until I got the sim.

The three one is a decent deal for 1gb for 7.50 per month, rolling contract.

I have had a 16Gb WiFi for about two months and have 2k tunes, 3 films and some other video, loads of apps, documents and about 2Gb of pictures - this thing is a great picture book. I read iBooks (actually converted pdfs). I have the camera connection kit that allows me to use SD - else a USB port that allows me to directly connect a camera (no tethered shooting though).

It is light and portable, the battery last slightly less than forever on a charge - and prior to her buying her own, slips nicely into a large handbag.

It is not just a big iPhone. I totally get people not wanting one. They are expensive. Your wife will love it, so will the kids. Make sure you have sufficient room on the credit card to buy another.

Totally agree with this. The iPad does exactly what I need, rather than the laptop I used to have which did more than I needed without being powerful enough to replace my main computer.

As I said, it must have been something that I did wrongly. I couldn't get past the screen insisting that I put the SIM in. Most probably I should have looked elsewhere other than the dialog box.

I got the 10Gb deal at £ 15 per month, as that was what was on offer in Currys at the time.
