Hi, I'm a newbie to the iPhone and I've just received this alert to download this update ....should I download and what are the benefits

Sean

Prior to install you can check what the update provides ... done iPad & iPhone here with no issues ATM :)

If you're not jailbroken, there's no reason not to update.

It's running 7.0.6 ,update is 1.5GB in size

No problems here either, have updated my Air 2 and iPhone 6, TBH, don't see any real differences from 8.1.1.

Think minor upgrade was only to fix some problem with ringtones in itunes.

All version of iOS 8 can be jailbroken (the process of allowing you to get out of Apple's jail and use your phone however you want) so might as well upgrade to the latest firmware for latest security fixes.

How easy is the ip5 to jailbreak , I jailbroke the ip3gs years ago which was quite easy if I remember right

Which are you reffering to Neil

The update

Or

Jailbreak

although unless you NEED to do it, its pretty pointless.

Not pointless at all!

There's so much more to add to the stock iOS. I've only tweaked minor stuff, but still a list of must-haves in my opinion:
- Activator (custom actions based on events, eg auto lock screen on car bluetooth disconnect, auto turn on wifi and bluetooth on power connect)
- BatteryLife (shows battery charge cycles and many more stats)
- CarrierNM (rename carrier name, so no more pointless carrier name taking up valuable space)
- CCSettings (a LOT more settings on swipe up controls, make it less pointless)
- Detailed Battery Usage (unlock hidden battery usage stats, including graphs and background program battery usage)
- iCleaner (clean up useless files left by iOS)
- iFile (proper file manager, you can't get anywhere near this without jailbreaking. This is also a must to change HOST file for adblocking)
- NoSlowAnimations (animations are too slow since iOS 7 update, this speeds them up)
- Uninstall Application size (see the size of application on uninstall confirmation screen. Why wasn't this included as default is mind boggling)
- Virtual Home (tap TouchID to activate home button, saves pressing it, because home button is always first to break)

you can also add themes, more functional tweaks (eg much better music control, customize messages, tweak apps like give chat bubbles back to FB app)
