Apple released iOS 8.1 this evening for iPad and iPhone.

I'm finding it to be quite a significant update, the iPad is feeling much quicker and smoother in use. Copy and paste is working properly again.

Safari is utter rubbish. Google search links still don't work a lot of the time. Many apps take forever to start. The fb app just goes to a black screen. SMTP server changed (!), short cuts stopped working, sms relay took an hour to get working after turning off and turning on all manner of settings to get this silly code to show up. You'd think it would have been as easy as just flipping iMessage on.

The first app I tried loaded quickly but it's been even more laggy than normal for the rest of the evening. Hopefully it's just doing some housekeeping and it will be a bit better tomorrow.

Can I ask which model of iPad please? I'm still on the last version of 7 on my 3 and I'm loathe to upgrade until I know it will work properly.

I've been running on it for the last week. Solid release again. Fixed my car Bluetooth issues.

If 7 works well and you don't want any of the new things urgently I wouldn't upgrade yet. When it is working well it is great but there are a few real irritants.

I've now done my iPad 4 and an iPad 2.

I've no idea what Suz is ranting about, even prior to 8.1 I had no problems with Google search or any apps (but then I don't bother with the Faceache app).

Everything just feels so quick, page loading, Safari browsing, text input, text selection and copy/paste are now quick (and more importantly more accurate and precise).

Getting the text feature working on the iPad was extremely easy as well, if you followed the guidance of turning iMessage off on both and then back on. It activated instantly for me.

I'm yet to find fault.

All my devices are upgraded. Never had an issue with iOS or upgrades on MacBook ever causing issues, always worked seamlessly first time.

On my iPad mini if you do a Google search from the url bar the search page comes up and displays links that aren't clickable at least half the time you do a search. It's consistent and repeatable and never happened with ios7.

Keyboard shortcuts stopped working. Others have reported this. If you don't use them you wouldn't know. You have to go into the short cut preferences and click edit to get them back.

Code not displayed when setting up text forwarding. Again others have reported the same. Adding and removing an email address from imessage usually triggers the code display if it doesn't work.

A quick Google shows others having similar issues and many others.

Can't say I've experienced any such issues at all.

IPad mini only has 512mb of ram. If I check with a system monitor I can see it is doing a lot of swapping memory in and out. The ipad 2 is also 512mb.

I think this is the fundamental problem and why apps are far less stable than they were. If I only have one maybe two open then it is better. It did similar with ios7 but only when I had about 10 apps open at once. Now it's having issues when I have about 3 which is a problem as I always have at least safari, mail and tweetcaster open.

Emptying the safari cache again seems to have helped with the Google issue for now. Others have said having block pop ups enabled is the cause but I've always had that enabled.

After the complete ballache that was iOS8, I'm hoping 8.1 has at least rectified some of 8's faults!

Any feedback from 4S owners here with regards to performance? or Mail App Duplicate E-Mail problems?

iPad mini has just died. Google links stopped working earlier. Then Gestures stopped working again, rebooted and it's got stuck on Apple logo.

Never had an apple product ever need a complete reinstall before. Upgrades have always been fine. Reboots always fixed any other weird issues too.

What is the issue?

8.1 has given me my camera roll back and got rid of the silly recently added pictures folder. But it's also jumbled my photos around other folders, I now have my formula one photos in my folder titled 'Rome' for some reason. Hopefully a quick sync with the computer will fix that later on.

I have the same with copy and paste. Doesn't work at all. Must be xenforo issue with whatever rich text editor thingy they use.

If you hit the spanner and put it to plain text then the select menu stays visible.

Just found out that Apples own iPhoto is not supported by 8.1 now which is naughty because iPhoto was a paid for app, although TBH it might have stopped working under iOS 8 as I don't use it much.

Paul

I was under the impression iPhoto has been discontinued and merged into the normal photo app, rather than not being supported.

Not upgraded iphone 5s on this yet, heard a lot of issues with it,wi-fi and Bluetooth and a few others.

It's been really slow to open messages for me since the update and photos still jumbled but other than that nothing major showing up.

The only problem I had with 8.0 was the Bluetooth not working with my car but all works perfectly since 8.1.
