I mentioned a fashion-style shoot in this thread.

Well, unless it’s belting down with rain it will take place on Friday, 10th June, at West Morton, (Nr. Riddlesden, W. Yorks.) starting at about 11.30 a.m. It will be fashion/clothed glamour shoot in a woodland setting with this model (not my photos). Michael Sewell has kindly offered to help, I’m going to try to get him to do most of the work – serve him right for saying that he wants to play with the Discovery:lol:

Basically, the invitation is for a small group of people to join in and take part. Anyone is welcome, I would think that this will be most useful to people who have never done any outdoor fashion shoots.

What’s involved? Basically acting as unpaid assistant, which means carrying lighting gear, holding lights, reflectors etc., making suggestions and, if you want to, taking some shots yourself. The model release will allow you to make full use of your shots. There won’t be a lot of carrying involved as we can drive close to where we want to be – probably.

We’ll be using the new Lencarta Discovery portable flash system, plus various light shapers such as folding softboxes and beauty dishes, and we will also be using the Lencarta Safari. We will also be making a short video of what happens, so if anyone wants to bring a camcorder with them (or operate one of mine) then that will be a big help.

What you’ll get out of it is an insight into how we approach this kind of shoot and how we use lighting to either complement or overpower ambient lighting, how we go about directing a model etc. The woodland setting allows us to shoot in both bright sunlight and shade, assuming that the sun shines, and there are open fields too, with sheep and some nearly new lambs. There’s also a farmyard, there’s usually a muck spreader and various other machinery there, so we may be able to do something with those too, time permitting.

The model will arrive at my studio in Bradford at 10 a.m. for makeup, we will then leave here at about 11 (so you need to be here by 10.45) and will drive to the venue, which is a farm, arriving hopefully at about 11.30. You may prefer to go directly to the venue, and if so I can give you directions, but it’s along an unnamed country road with no known postcode and involves driving along a rutted farm track, so starting from my studio might be a better option...

I have room in my 4x4 for 3 passengers + model. Michael will also have room for passengers in his 4x4, so as long as everyone travels in one of these cars we won’t have any problems with the farm track, which can be a bit muddy at times. Depending on the weather during the previous few days though, wellie boots might be a good idea...

Statement of the obvious, but no dogs – there will be stock in the fields – and the gate will have to be kept shut.

Feel free to ask questions on this thread, but please contact me by PM if you would like to take part. Strictly on a first come basis.

Gutted I'm still away or I'd have been there like a shot.

Hmmmm, I should have seen that coming :suspect:

I can take four passengers, or three large rugby player types!

I'll be bringing a Safari kit and modifiers including octa, softboxes and beauty dishes etc.

Right,
So far we have Michael, Richard and myself, all with environmentally-unfriendly gas guzzling 4 x 4's:)
Richard will be making his way there direct, we will have to meet nearby. He is travelling from Fleetwood and has kindly offered a lift to anyone from that direction.
The farm track is only really a problem if it's muddy or if the car is very low, and as we now have 3 proper cars with proper ground clearance going there it won't be a problem for anyone.

Sounds like a good day .
PM sent Gary .
John

We now have 5 people in total, with room for maybe 8 - so just a quick bump to see whether anyone else wants to get involved and put up with me for a few hours...

I'm driving over to Garry's studio from Leeds if anybody needs/wants a lift .
John .

Well, we got lucky:)
Despite the weather forecast, and despite the rain driving there and driving back it all worked out OK and we even had a hint of sun...
Many thanks to Michael Sewell for doing most of the work, which allowed me to sit around and criticise, which is what I do best.

Didn't really get a chance to thank both Garry and Michael for a great day so a big thankyou guys . Really loved having the chance to play around with the lights and see what they could do . Also Allana was a great model for putting up with us all ,even when she was freezing . Just need to have a good look at the shots to see how many keepers I have , and get some sent off to Garry . Thanks again Garry and Michael . John

A Big thanks to Garry and Michael for organising this great shoot .... both myself and my son Lewis really enjoyed it and also the chance at meeting other friendly faces off here too ... Thanks ! :)

Allana is such a lovely friendly professional model ... easy to work with and knows exacly how to fall into a pose ...

Barney, ask Garry if there's a chance of another go at some point

If another shoot is organised dont miss it Barney ... both Michael and Garry are top lads ... they know their stuff and make it a very enjoyable day ...

The portable lighting gear from Lencarta was top quality ... and suprisingly light weight .. might just invest in a portable setup myself .. :)

I too am now considering a portable setup it seems ideal to me . Just need to start saving and try to convince my better half it's a worthwhile investment :suspect:

I'm glad that people found it helpful.
The idea was for people to see what can be done with OCF in an outdoor setting. As it happens the weather was dull to the point of producing completely flat, useless light, which meant that we could create strong, controlled lighting to add interest, define the shape of the face, reduce the effect of the ambient to the point that even a featureless sky could be underexposed to reveal its detail.

And light the background too, so that we didn't turn day into night unless we actually wanted to. In one setup we put a second flash 65 yards behind the subject to throw a splash of light on the distant background. I haven't seen any shots yet but it should look like a shaft of sunlight getting past the trees.

If the weather had been bright sun then we would have used the flash to light the subject and would have left the sun to light the background.

The whole point is to use portable flash if needed, so that we can create exactly the lighting conditions we need, regardless of the weather, direction of light and so on. Sometimes the natural light can be right for the shot but usually we need to produce our own light to help or replace the natural light, which is why we were using the Lencarta 600Ws portable power kits - hotshoe flashes would have just about coped with closeups but would have done nothing to help with the background.

From Lencarta's viewpoint, the idea was to put the new portable flash system to a tough, real life test, which it did. The Discovery unit used to light the background was on full power pretty much all of the time, and at one point I accidentally left the modelling lamp on, but it's still showing full charge. What I need to do next is to make a short video of the shoot, and to do that I need still photos from the shoot. Unfortunately I got a bit involved with shouting at people in my usual friendly style and had to leave it to them to actually take the shots. Everyone has promised to send me their shots, I need them straight from camera because any shots that I use will be as shot, so that people can see exactly what the lighting actually did. If it would help, people can send me the shots via Yousendit, I will supply details on request.

As for another shoot, I'm up for it and I'm sure I can borrow the venue again but I don't feel that I can ask Lencarta to pay for a model for a second shoot that won't actually benefit them, so if we do do another shoot I will have to ask those who attend to split the cost between them.

If any of you chaps have also got images of the sets in ambient light (I know Chris and Lewis took quite a few), could you let Garry have a couple of those too. It would provide a good benchmark to show the difference the lighting actually made.

If anyone also has a behind the scenes shot, showing light/reflector positions etc, I'm sure they would be appreciated too.

it may look worse to me than it is, but errrrk someone fix that stand, stat :( or at least bag it... be safe guys :)

Believe me Dave, it wasn't going anywhere. :)
My standard practice is to lash them down whenever possible. That's me in the yellow jacket, knocking the pegs in as the shot was taken. If you look carefully, you can see the green guide rope in my left hand, running across my jacket.

Be safe .. ?

It was lashed down in place with several tent guy ropes ... tornado proof .. :)

oh haha :D

good stuff :) both as a photographer and an assistant it's my job to pay attention to health and safety on set... I get fidgety when stuff doesn't look right :P

Hi Guys
I must again thank the guys for making this day happen, I am very inexperienced at shooting models with professional lighting which was very kindly provided by Garry and Lencarta and let us guys loose to answer my many questions
must also add that the model was very very good to shoot as she needed very little direction going from one pose to another
Michael was also a top man answering questions and setting up the lights etc so thanks guys
I will get some images on a disc and sent to you
do you want me to post it to the studio address ??

Got to admit, at first glance, it does look like it's going to be expensive :gag:

Jeez, the male model in the yellow jacket could do with a bit more weight and losing some hair.

er......... no... wait a minute........
Who's the old guy with a stupid smile holding a flash meter?

I'd be up for splitting the costs of a model with 3 or 4 others. It's just to get out and shoot with other photogrpahers sometimes, bounce ideas around and pick things up. Plus the lighting kit looks interesting too.

Can I just remind the people who attended that I'm still waiting for the shots you took?
