I have funds to look at the Canon 70-200 f2.8 USM IS II. (and Canon 1x4 extender)

I have researched this lens and it looks great.

My only concern will it be long enough for shooting at airshows and sports?

Dont see why not but maybe consider getting a 2x extender?

Does the x2 not suffer from much more light loss than the 1x4?

I haven't researched them both fully yet.

The 1.4x will lose you 1 stop of light whilst the 2x will lose you 2 stops. ie your 2.8 becomes a 4.0 or 5.6.

I experienced that shooting at a football match with my Tamron and Kenko.

Luckily it was on a bright day!!

But your Tamron is f5.6 to start with!

I've seen some impressive shots with that lens & a 2x, you may not want to use it all the time (1.4x is supposed to be excellent) but I think you can get away with it when you need to.

Well when I say 'lucky' my dad is still deid but I got his house sold eventually!! :D

He was the one that got me into photography years ago and bought me this:

If you want a lens to use primarily with the extender, I'd look at getting a longer lens to start with.

I sold my 1.4extender. I thought I would use it but I just didn't like the difference from the 70-200f2.8l without it. I would agree and say to go for something longer to start with.

i have used a 200mm at airshow and had some good results and that was on film camera - so full frame - the 200 would be equivalent to 320 and i would expect that to be fine

Sports - all depends on what sport and how far you are away - brands hatch, this time I had a 300mm on a full frame film camera and got some good shots

for cricket I had a 300 on a 2x converter and tripod- again full frame film camera - and got some ok shots - but lost a lot of quality

no idea about airshows...

sports.. well that covers a wide wide range of things... however I have three lens for sport.. a 400mm, 35mm and the setup you describe.. apart from cricket (400mm) and combat (35mm) I guess i could do 90% of my work with the 70-200 and 1.4 ...its a great combination...

I think I'll stick to my plan and get the 70-200 and 1x4 as it's not everyday I'll be up the Mach Loop or at RIAT!!

The above set up looks as if I'll get much more out of it.

I may look for a second hand 400mm for my Xmas!! :D :D

the 70-200 2.8 II is a belter of a lens and works well with a 1.4. It takes a 2 TC aswell - so maybe this is something you could look at buying in future or hiring for those odd occasions you need the extra reach.

I've still got my mighty Tamron and Kenko x2 to play with!!:bang:

It is a great lens....I got mine for a good price from HDEW and I even got £175 cashback from Canon as well!
