I'm going to Inverness for a couple of days at the end of September running a training course but hopefully there will be some time for togging. Any suggestions on interesting places, things to photograph

Anywhere apart from the class room...

I am sure you will have plenty of idea at teh end of this thread Maureen, hope you have a good time when you finally get there..

In the city, the castle, Caledonian Canal, River Ness, the Kessock Bridge, Ness Islands

Out of the city, more of the Caledonian Canal, Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, Black Isle, Findhorn Bay, Clava Cairns, Culloden, Beauly Firth, Cromarty Firth, Fort George, Ardesier and everything down the A9 to Aviemore are all within roughly 30 minutes by car...

I would probably say your best bet is heading over to Urqhuart Castle or Loch Ness direction if time is limited. How long would you actually have spare? Glen Affric or even the Cairngorms is worth a visit if you have a day to spare.

If your stuck to Inverness itself, there are also bottlenose dolphins about in the firth at this time of year. If you cross the Kessock Bridge and turn off into the village of North Kessock, there is a dolphin and seal watch centre there.
Alternatively there is Fort George or Cawdor Castle on the road to Nairn (A96).

Just a few ideas, im sure others can come up with better ones...

Thanks to you both for the ideas sounds like some great places for togging there. I'm flying up there so will be restricted to the town and close by. Will also have my manager with me as we're running the training together so depends on whether he's up for travelling any further afield too.

If you're sticking to the town itself then the best bet is to travel up the Ness from the town centre. There's a pedestrian bridge from Bank Street which is a good place to start via Church Street and School Lane (type Church Street in Google Maps) and wander up the river towards Ness Bank. Inverness isn't the loveliest of towns in the whole wide world but that walk is attractive with good views of Eden Court and the Ness Islands. Enjoy your trip.

Thanks aberal for more useful information. I've never been to Inverness before so I'm sure I'll enjoy my stay even if most of it is work related :)

In the town center you can walk up Castle Street to the front of the castle itself, there are some good high angle views of Inverness and across the river to the South.

I am actually off to Inverness on Thursday (to see the Proclaimers - Yay!!) but I am cheating a little, I lived there from 1980 - 1997 so I already have the locations in my head, first visit home with a DSLR too!!

One good view is of the kessock bridge from a place called alturlie point

good views around sunset.

also the walk up the river ness from harbour all the way through the town right up to the ness islands gives great opportunities, enjoy your trip!!

Hope you have a great trip dubnut. Look forward to seeing your photographs :)

Will definitely be using all the information and following the advice on where and what to take pgotoraphs :)

you get a nice view of the sewage works from there too nowadays :)

If you go over the Kessock Bridge at Inverness and head along the north shore of the Moray Firth to Fortrose and then down to the Firth side at Chanonry Point, then a couple of hours either side of high and low tide the dolphins come almost to the shore and leap about like.. well.. dolphins.
Its absolutely fabulous and i'll be there in a fortnight:woot:
