Hi,

Quick intro - this site was recommended to me by someone over at EPZ forums.

I've been into photography for a little while, mostly landscape and some working with models (although only recently starting getting studio\lighting experience). I've recently decided to experiment with film and was told the film section here is good. To avoid typing it all again here is my post from EPZ. I've got batteries on order, the chambers seemed in good condition with no sign of corrosion so I'm hoping they were just dead and the metering will work on at least of the cameras :)

I was told poundland can stock film, or otherwise was given some links for good websites etc and also for processing. However I think the cost involved, having to wait for the results, and not having the option of RAW editing will make me plan shots a lot more carefully and also I'm hoping I'll learn from the experience. I also just really like the feel of the cameras :)

----

By the time I was into photography enough to get an SLR digital was the thing and they were cheap enough that that's what I got and have used ever since. I do like being able to try endless combinations of things without it costing me anything but I do think it would be interesting to try a film SLR. I recently ended with one in good condition - a Fujica AZ-1 with a Fujinon 43-75mm lens - that someone was giving away on Freecycle. I've also more recently found a Fujica st705w with a 55mm Fujinon lens on it, although this was found in a shed and although it is in a case it isn't in great condition.

I'm planning on getting a couple of films and trying them out, initially getting the films developed elsewhere but if the bug bites I may consider doing some home developing.

I think it will be interesting having the limit of shots and obviously some cost involved so having to plan each shot more carefully etc.

Does anyone have any tips to get the most from the cameras, and any good shots to try? I was going to just try a variety of things, and if I end up getting to do a studio shoot at some point maybe taking one along and getting a couple of extra shots on it there.

Hello Simon, that was me over on EPZ. Welcome to Talk Photography and especially to the film and conventional section. If you have a look at the stickies at the top of the page you will find lots of useful info and please feel free to ask any questions you have, no such thing as a daft question in here, although you may get some daft answers. :D

Andy

Thanks Andy, just read the main beginners guide bit. Very useful point about checking for light leaks.

, although you may get some daft answers. :D

................especially from me :p:D

Welcome Simon.:welcome:

As Andy has mentioned, there are some stickies to read through offering some sound advice and of course we're all here to confuse help where we can:)

For a start, Poundland's Agfa Vista 200 is excellent for starters if you can get it, and if you've got a big ASDA near you you may get process and CD for £3 a film (else Snappy Snaps/Max Spielmann in many city centres for about £5 a film, process and scan, an hour or so), all good for those first few films. Take lots of shots, enjoy your cameras, and come back and show us some please! :)

Oh, and they're right, above: ask as many questions as you like! Many of us here have only been back in film a bit longer than you, we're all learning, we're all having fun, and we rarely shout at one another... The interesting thing is, when someone asks a question, many of us who've been here a while still learn something new pretty much every darn time.

WE do also have a number of film meets every year so when you've settled in and if there is a meet near enough to get to, join in its fun (although we do spend quite a lot of time in pubs talking about cameras....)

Ah. Never heard of it  :$

Welcome Simon, look forward to seeing how you get on....

@Andysnap i think this is very good work Andy ,,,going to other forums and bringing them back here .good thinking that man

Yes, I laid a trail of Kodak Portra cannisters and they followed it right up to the door where Roberts was waiting with a stiff brandy....Once you enter you can never leave, just like Hotel California.

Hi Mr Donut ! -- YES, I am on FADU too !!

... assuming Google is my friend (not!), and you're not talking about a Portugoose dance, I think I've got the relevance of FADU! Never looked yet, though

Hi Simon and Pete, you will find this a great group and full of expert knowledge and information about film. I look forward to seeing some of your work and sharing the fantastic world of film!

Hello Simon and Welcome :)

Welcome both.

This is quite comfortably the best film forum on t'interweb.

Even a fumbling buffoon like myself feels welcome

Thanks for all the welcomes

Batteries for the AZ- turned up yesterday, AE meter seems to work fine and I went to Poundland and got half a dozen Agfa films from the huge pile they had. I also found the 55mm lens on the other one is a f1.4. So far I've run a couple of test shots with the lenses and seems to work well.
Looking forward to seeing how they turn out. There's a snappy snaps in town as well which is very handy.

Excellent Simon, looking forward to the results.
