Got interview this Friday for Web Administrator at Rotherham College :D. Just read through the letter and its say I have to do presentation :o .....most interviews I been, just basic questions etc without presentation but this one is my first time :( Presentation should last approximately 10 minutes also few spare for any questions from panel members!

Need tips from you guys :P Is anyone here been interview with presentation before? what they trying to aims at? What the best part presentation they want to look at?

Presentation that I need to be work on is:

“What are the benefits to the College of having an effective electronic interface?”

I remember tutor was talk about it in first year at Uni (4 years ago!) but can’t find bloody uni handouts. Is there any links of good information about it? I can’t find it on internet as well :(

Any information would be useful

Cheers :)

from things I have done for interviews and courses you need to keep it simple stay away from the silly sound effects such as slides zooming in etc. Avoid jargon and specialist terms (if able) and keep the layout bright and simple and clean (not clip art)

also use the power point features such as timing show etc. I also write bullet notes on what I'm going to say with details such as when to click acroos to next slide etc.

although my carrer path lies down the road of food & beverage event management these rules have always helped me

never use the self timer to move slides on.... especially if your not used to doing presentations, if you freeze or pause or forget your words then the presentation will get away from you, and that;ll likely make things worse. move it on by hand its safer!!!

as mentioned above do bullet points and know the framework of what you are going to say, you dont want to sound like your reading it.

Basic thoughts from someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.

You need background info on the College. Some colleges use computers to post lecture notes, set assignments/essay questions, students can e-mail their essays in and questions can be e-mailed. Some colleges give each new student a laptop. To find out how this college uses computers you could just phone reception and enquire, if you don't want to do that go to the college ask the students hanging around their and have a look around. Do they have a website to find out info such as do they have computer rooms, how many students do thet have.

Using computers in the above way means no travelling to hand in your essay, you don't have to be in the same place at the same time to ask a question, you're using less paper, you can access information at the weekend/evening, you can reach a lot of people, some of the advatages will be money saving, some time saving, think about security too.

Their website is the face of the college and how it promotes itself to potential students and probably provides info on what courses they do etc although I haven't looked at it.

An effective system means you can rely upon it as the above are important functions and will effect how the college runs and performs.

This is a lay persons ramblings, hope they help and good luck!!!!

Thanks for information. However, college is like 2 and half hour away :( so i have to look on net. Is electronic interface is like WebCT or Blackboard?

It will be a generalised term to cover all communication by computer on any programme/product. I don't know what they use.

You could refer to product rather than brand name eg spreadsheet instead of excel or word processor for instance Word or e-mail a version being outlook etc. Try to think of all the products, their uses and the advantages when they are reliably used. And what makes a product effective? A good IT team including the web administrator

Again good luck

If you only have 10 minutes, I would suggest the following:

Slide 1: Title of presentation and your name (to introduce yourself and what you are presenting)

Slides 2 to 4: Outline 3 main benefits, 1 per slide. Under the benefit make 3 further bullets maximum of 1 line each to expand on / explain each benefit.

Slide 5: Provide a short summary in bullet point format.

Slide 6: Thank you for listening - Any questions ?

Presentation skills:

- Do no just read the slide, be prepared to add your own words.
- Look at the audience and not the slide when talking.
- Make eye-contact, switching between people for each bullet.
- Talk clearly and quite loudly (you will not be as loud as you think).
- Try and relax and dont be afraid to use your arms and hand (reduces nerves)

Most important of all, stand up and practice it out loud before you go several times and time it to make sure you can keep within 10 minutes.

The interviewers will be as interested in you and your approach as they are in the content.

Don't know if it still applies but when I was giving presentations it was always...

Tell them what your going to tell them (intro)
Tell them (body)
Tell them what you told them (summary)

Keep it simple and to the point!

It sounds like they'll be looking for someone with new idea's on how they can improve what they already have, look at they're website, whats wrong/right with it and where can your skills improve what they have?

Just a thought...

One piece of advice I always gave my sales staff when preparing a PowerPoint presentation was to run all the text through a spell checker as spelling mistakes/typos really stand out like a sore thumb when displayed on a big screen.

The other thing worth doing is to have a copy of your presentation on a memory stick or burned onto a CD. Equipment problems - particularly when going for an IT position - are just about the last thing you want on the day.

Anthony.

Find out as much about the college as possible, you can come up with all sorts of fancy ideas, but if it's not relevant to how they operate......fail.

Whatever you do, do NOT put much text on the presentation. Stick to diagrams where possible. Nothing sends an audience to sleep faster than watching someone read out what is on the screen behind them. Their attention should be on YOU, not the projector, use it complement what you have to say, not the other way round.
