Interrailing around Europe

Hi guys,

Off round Europe in May / June for 5 weeks, interrailing.

I have never been so stressed about planning anything. I think I am looking into my route too much, and maybe just need to go with the flow?

A lot of people have said I am trying to visit too much.

But thoughts on this route? (I have to start in Barca as my flight is already booked.)

Barcelona >Toulouse (breaks the journey up to Paris? Or is there anywhere else you can recommend?) > Paris > Amsterdam > MISS GERMANY OUT > Prague > Budapest > Austria > ITALY, Venice, Florence, Rome, possibly the Amalfi Coast > Fly home from Italy?
Not sure if that’s the best route geographically? Think that’s the word I mean?
& hopefully that isn’t too much?

When I am actually out there on my travels I may wish to spend longer at certain places? Or less? So my route may change?

Verona is just over an hour away from venice, really worth a visit. Romeo and Juliet, stunning amphitheatre, great food and a huge tower you can go up for views.

A couple of years ago we did Italy by train, london to Paris, to venice on overnight sleeper, to Verona, then picked up a car to go around lake geneva and drove to Rome so I could go via marenello and the Ferrari factory and museum. Then from Rome to Milan, and then to Zurich, via the Goddard pass. Stunning scenery.

End of the month I'm going from Munich to venice by train, as the route via the alps is also supposed to be stunning.
 
Oh there's an overnight train leaves Paris 8:30 at night, gets into Barcelona 8:30 next morning.

You'll have a great time, enjoy. Take time to explore, go off the beaten track away from tourist stuff and find the real bits of the places you visit.

But I start in Barcelona.....


Then want to travel to Paris, but not sure where to stop off before that? Or may go straight to Paris?
 
Why go all the way up to Paris from Barca?
What are you planning to see and do?
Are you planning on sleeping on trains?
Why have you hardly posted anything on a photography forum, besides enquiring about a holiday? :D

There's an identical one back, 8:30 at night, gets in at 8:30 in the morning

I've done it for a long weekend in Barcelona. Means you only have one nights hotel for two whole days in barcelona
But I'd go Barcelona, marseille, monoco, then into Italy, through Italy, back to Milan, the take the train to Zurich (which is interesting, especially the food and some clubs), then from the to paris

You could go from Nice to Genova in 2hrs 55mins

Then from Genova to Firenze (Florence), which takes around 3 hours.

Firenze to Roma takes around 1 hr 20 mins

Rome to Naples from 1hr 10mins to 2 hours

Naples to Venice about 5 hours.

I suppose that you could do Italy in 10 to 15 days, but you would only skim the surface.

You'll have a great time Will, it's THE best way to see Europe. I did an Interail trip a couple of years ago [March] and went from Paris - Narvik[North Norway]-Verona-Nice-Montepelier-Barcelona etc. ...down to farthest South Europe and back home! Great .... but........ too much and that is my warning! :)
I loved the travelling but didn't see enough of the actual country I was in apart from it wizzing past at 100mph! Overnight stops in main line cities and not enough exploring.
I used fast trains TGVs ICEs etc. I wouldn't do that again as much. Levels of comfort are amazing on the high speed trains, if you're only used to UK 2nd class, prepare for something else. But, you usually pay extra on top of your rail-card for travel on these services so consider local trains. Hop on hop off at any little town you fancy,easy with the rail-card.
SNCF [the French rail] has some smashing TGVs but the local stuff especially in the south is scruffy and graffiti covered plus they're more expensive if you travel on the TGVs.
DB [German] Frighteningly punctual! Train meant to depart at 14.02, train leaves at 14.02 unt doors closed 1 minute before unt you do not board!
Spanish, lovely fast trains and free earphones to listen to the on board music.
Swedish rail is amazing, the overnight from Stockholme to Narvik is an experience [ about 14 hours if memory serves].
I'm rambling :) Final word...
Don't plan too much, go with the flow.

I have been to Naples three times, and although the saying goes - "See Naples and die" - the place is a bit scruffy. There is also nothing on the Amalfi coast which you cannot see on the Cote d'Azur or the coast towards Genoa. We also had better pizzas in Rome and Genoa than we did in Naples.
If you miss out on Naples, then why not take in Verona on the way to Venice, because it is a lovely place. If it were me, then I would probably stay in Garda (on Lago di Garda) for a few days, and take a day trip to Verona, and maybe book tickets to see the opera at the Roman arena there - we saw Verdi's Aida and it was truly magnificent.

Verona is a must, lake Garda has a cable car to the top which is great for a view of the alps?
I'd stay in Verona, easy to walk into from the train station and hire a car for a day to do Garda. It's not very far away.
Verona amphitheatre is stunning, and great when shows are on. Don't miss out the museum and there's a couple of great galleries. I saw three photo exhibitions there. Opposite the amphitheatre there's a side street with a restaurant just up it with views of the amphitheatre. I had an amazing rabbit risotto
 
If you want a really pleasant day out I can recommend the ferry on Garda which goes from one end to the other - its about an 8 hour round trip IIRC
