"Internet Explorer has stopped working" (all the time it seems)

Anyone else plagued by the dreaded "Internet Explorer has stopped working" message.

IE actually hasn't stopped working because if I close down the damned IE popup message IE carries on working until the message appears again in a few minutes.

Tried removing all IE add ons, closed down any other running programs, returned IE to default settings, Googled the problem to distraction and tried the various solutions on offer.

I would ditch IE, but a few websites that I need require it to function correctly.

Is there a kind soul out there with an answer (short of phoning the Samaritans).

Yes. A lot of people never use IE. And avoid any organisation that have programmed their website specially for IE. You can usually leave feedback telling them to stick to web standards.

Just use Firefox or similar.
I've never come across a website I can't access with it.
 
Its a difficult problem to fix. Many Databases and SQL type reports will use Internet Explorer exclusively so you can't just switch to Chrome or whatnot unless you want to lose any dynamic options.

Try any Windows hotfixes (Search for the specific error on the MS site), Windows updates. Uninstall any weird stuff (as you state you've been doing)- Also you can try malwarebytes trial software to ensure you don't have any nasties residing on your system.
Typically when this kind of error pops up and you waste more than an hour or two of fixing, then it's easier to either rebuild the windows OS or use it as an excuse to upgrade to 10!

I use Firefox at every opportunity. I find that when I shop at Tesco their search function disappears with Firefox. Screwfix also has issues. Other thing is that when companies email weblinks to permit delivery tracking they automatically open IE.
 
It's worth posting feedback to Tesco and Screwfix. And reduce any dependance on IE.

I don't have IE. So none of its problems and vulnerabilities either.

Cheers Richard. I have been down the malware hunt trail to no avail. I take the view that when everything on my PC works fine except except IE then it is IE that needs to change.

Weird.

I order online from Screwfix most weeks.

I've never had a problem tracking deliveries from DPD, TNT, Royal Mail...
I only use Firefox.

No Problem. Unfortunately Internet Explorer is still kind of built into Windows 7, so rather than it just being a problem with that application, it's may be an issue which could be more troublesome. You can try to uninstall/reinstall and cross your fingers though!

To uninstall Internet Explorer
  1. Click the Start button, and enter Programs and features in the search box.
  2. Click Programs and Features in the list of results, then click View installed updates.
  3. Under Microsoft Windows, right-click Internet Explorer, then click Uninstall.

I haven't used firefox in a while. It was my preferred browser but it just seemed to bloat and then became very unstable, very buggy. Got fed up and now use edge on win 10 and ie on win 7 ... fwiw I tired chrome too and that drove me nuts, always trying to auto fill stuff, even when switched off. It's form handling is/was dire too.
 
Like the OP I have occasion to visit a handful of websites requiring IE. I much prefer Chrome in everyday practice and just use IE when I have the rare occasion to visit the sites that Chrome sometimes has trouble running, usually some java app.
Whilst were on the subject of duff web pages.....anyone else sick to death of advert hungry web pages that wont load until all the ads have downloaded.....particularly on news media sites...
