As title really ... there are some absolutely stunning bird pics in this bunch ... something for all us budding garden bird 'togs to aspire to perhaps ... :D

The 'Swift' shot, although 'shopped made me smile ... ;)

IWPA Awards 2006

You can also see the similarly stunning shots from previous years from this site too ...

Looks on in wonder and hangs up gear forever ... :(

:p

Some great images there, the winning shot is a real once in a lifetime image, although my favourites are the penguin and the Marsh Harrier in flight, the lighting is sublime.

You are absolutely spot on Colin ... great to look at but wouldn't it be great to be able to do such stuff ... :D

Not sure I can choose a favourite ... they're all so damn good ...

:p

wow!

Totally stunning winning shot.
The marsh harrier is also great.

Superb shots but some on this forum come close.

perhaps the swift had beans for breakfast.

Certainly had something unusual ... rocket up his ... perhaps ... :D

:p

Nice link Ven
Lovely shots, all of 'em, but I reckon the judges got it right IMHO...the winner is superb

Thanx Rick ... and :agree: with you about the overall winner ...

Did you check out the other years as well though ... easy to see the improvements year on year both in the standard of pics and the standard of the web site ... ;)

Well worth a looksee anyway ...

:p

Yes, great pics in the old galleries.
One of my favourite pics (which I think maybe won a compo compo a few years back - or a very similar pic to it) is this one of a Goshawk - magnificent bird, but not too friendy :D

They are a magnificent bird too and it is a great photograph ... so rarely seen because they really do hate human disturbances ... ;) ... thanx for the linky Rick ...

Didnt packham and oddie ajudicate the BBC Wildlife comp as well, quite a job they both have !

Well Packham seems to turn up just about everywhere ... like a bad penny and as for Bloddie ... guess he is getting on a bit to participate physically like he used to so sitting on panels and adjudicating probably suits him down to the ground ... gotta earn a crust or two ...

:p

Must say, I've always liked Bill Oddie. Has anyone read his 'little black bird book' - absolutley hilarious   . Bought it (and 'Gone birding' - his 2nd book) when they 1st came out, and have read them both several times.
In fact they're sitting right next to me on the bookcase so I might have another dabble...

the penguin one is amazing, aswell as the harrier like someone else said. not sure if i totally agree on the top one being the overall winner, but still amazing photos.

I have both of these Rick and you are right they are so damn funny ... ... Bill actually signed both of them for me when I met him at the Bird Fair in Rutland a few years ago, even though the 'Little Black' one was not new at the time as it is a first edition ... top man really ..

Long time since I read them so you might have sewn a seed there ... :suspect:

:p

any reason why so many of the finalists are scandinavian?

any reason why so many of the finalists are scandinavian?

Not so sure Si ... guess it may have something to do with the perfick light they get over there ... as well as an adundance of the more unusual species ...

It is amazing that with all the gear used by specialist wild bird 'togs the overall winner was taken with a Nikon ... and a D70 at that ... :D

And given Joe's comments about the D70 being the most popular camera of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition too it must be a cool camera ...

:p

I dont get what is quite so great about it, thats all! :)

Oh I see ... :D

Well apart from the fact it is only just in Britain ... ... have you ever tried to get close enough to photograph one of these tiny, fast moving and very nervous birds ...

That said I do see precisely what you mean when comparing it to the Overall Winner ... no contest really is there ... :suspect:

:p

Wow indeed! Some fantastic shots there, but I have to agree with Joe I'm struggling to see the great merit in the Ringed Plover shot, although I suppose it depends what the opposition was.

I do know what you and Joe mean Cedric ... perhaps you are right about the 'competition' ... :D
