Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has used this kit or could offer me any advice as to how good it is?

I will be using it for indoor portraits mainly in my spare bedroom or garage so i wont need them to throw light very far.

Really, i just want to know if this is a good starter kit or if there is something else thats better for a similar price (this is £219 on the WEX site)?

Thanks for your help.

Matt

Hiya Matt. you might want to check that you're not restricted in using Interfit accessories such as umbrellas etc, I don't think the Interfit kits are compatable with the widely used Bowens S type fitting which will allow you to use a multitude of accessories.
I went down a similar route to you some months ago and ended up buying the Lencarta Smartflash twin head kit (and recently added a 3rd light) The Lencarta kits are dearer but I'm chuffed to bits with mine - the customer service I've had has been first class and the quality of the kit is excellent.

I got this kit about 3 years ago to use at home and learn about lighting. Apart from 1 burn out issue caused by dust inside the head (repaired FOC) they are still going strong. Not the greatest range of control, you can't turn off the beep, and not cooled. BUT, a cheap way of getting into lighting, and good enough for home use!
I believe elinchrom fit modifiers will also fit the EX range, so plenty of cheap alternative modifiers available.
With hindsight I would probably have saved more money and bought a better kit, as I now can't afford to buy what I would rather have!

PS. If you want to see some examples of stuff I've shot using these lights, by all means drop me a pm.

I had a look at the Lencarta kit but I wasn't sure if it was worth the extra £100 over the Interfit. I guess it largely depends on whether 150w is going to be too low, if it is then it would make sense to save for a bit longer and get the 2x 200w Lencartas.

Thanks for the advice, has heat been a problem for you with these not being cooled?

Heats not been an issue no, as they dont get used for hours on end. I would guess the longest I have used them in one go would be around 2.5-3 hrs.

If you are using them in a garage or bedroom as you suggest, I (personally) don't think you will have an issue with not having enough light.
I've found that they don't go low enough to shoot wide open with, so I ditch them for my speedlite through a softbox if that's what I have to.

I've had this lighting kit for about 7 months to learn more about the basics of studio lighting and set ups, and surprise at how good some of the results are for how inexpensive it was to buy. I too bought the kit off wex and it's more than done the job for me so far.

I've found them very good (I have the three head kit), but I just don;t get enough use out of them because I can't leave them set up so I may be selling soon - once I've posted about it here and sought some advice.

I think im starting to lean a bit more towards getting something a bit more powerful like the 200W Lencarta Smartflash kit mentioned above. Im a bit concerned that in a year or so I may have outgrown the Interfit 150W kit in terms of ability and will wish I had spent the extra in the first place.

Just for info, mines for sale now if you're interested.

I bought this kit new and still have it and use it. Although as somebody stated it is not Bowens fit, it is actually the same fitting as Elinchrom gear which are widely available all over the internet and in shops. I have since bought a used 500w Elinchrom head for £125 on ebay and use that as my main light, but the interfit lights are still great for home portraits, background lighting, fill lights, hair lights etc and any studio product/macro work I do. For what you get in the kit it is worth the price imo and a great set of lights that can still be used if you decide to get something a bit more powerful later on like I did and all the accessories I got with the interfit kit (softbox, reflectors etc)fit my 500w Elinchrom head too with no kind of modifying.

I already had a Lencarta Smartflash head and have just been given (yes i'm a lucky boy) 2 EX150 heads. Smartflash wins hands down. The interfits aren't fan assisted and are no where nearly as reliable as the lencarta. The interfits are good for the price, but i'd spend the extra and get the smartflash
