Interfit EX150 sync with Canon 5D

Hi,

Apologies if this question has already been discussed, but I haven't found a comprehensive answer to my problem in the archive.

I am new to flash photography and have recently bought a used Interfit EX 150 MkI off ebay.

The problem is that the flashes would not sync if I use the sync cord. I understand that this is a common problem with Canon camera and has to do with the voltage.

Therefore I tried to sync the flased with my 430EX but it did not work very well either. In the setup I used, I didn't need an on-camera flash. So I have set it to 1/32 power and pointed to the ceiling. But in this case the interfit flashes do not always detect that the speedlite has fired and hence do not fire. Sometimes they fire before/after the speedlite has fired.

What is the best way to fix it or to avoid using the hotshoe to sync altogether? Do I use the radio transmitter?
Given the tight budget, which one do you recommend?

The 150's are not bad lights for the money, but yes there are problems with some heads and sync cables. I have two of them that i have had for years now and use them as background lights, one works with the sync cord the other doesn't.

Flashing with your 430 wont work properly because of the pre-flash it produces so there are two ways to go, you can buy an IR trigger that will fire the flash or you can get a set of radio triggers.

Radio triggers come in all different price ranges but I would avoid the real cheap ones and spend a couple of pound more and get something that's been tested/used by others, there are lots of thread to search through and make your own mind up.

The sync cable option should work fine, you just need to plug it into the PC socket. Although you don't say, some Canon cameras don't have a PC socket so you need a PC adapter to fit in the hot-shoe. The 430EX should also trigger the Interfits via their built-in optical slaves, but it has to be fired in manual (so no pre-flash) and as you seem to have found, when the flash is bright enough to trigger the heads, it may also be bright enough to influence the picture.

Radio triggers are another option, and overall propably the best one. They're cheap, reliable and versatile. Suggest Yongnuo RF-602. They will do the job, and cheap. Make sure you get the right cable to plug into the Interfits.
 
I was under the impression that the 430 fired the pre-flash regardless of manual or ettl mode, I stand corrected :)

But the EX150's are a pain with sync cables, as I said on one head it fires a treat, on the other I have to literally unplug the pc socket from the camera between each shot. I've tested it on a 5d, 5dIII and a 7d so I know its not the camera :shrug:

You know it isn't the camera or the cord because you mentioned the other light works fine. Interfit isn't really the best of quality, but decent for the money and I have heard of people having this issue. Usually there is a way to factory reset on monolights which can help or sometimes the circuitry by the sync port in the light is faulty.
