Hi,

Maybe a bit of an odd question for this forum but it does relate to lighting. Using a camera outdoors carries a very low risk of harming anyone I would have thought. But perhaps that is not the case with flash.

Say I'm on a public road, or any public bit of land, shooting a car with some flash. There is the possibility, low maybe, of harming someone or perhaps causing an accident. Is insurance required for this if you are not a business? Public liability insurance for a business is a nobrainer but what about the guy doing it for fun. Is insurance recommended or overkill?

Regards...

If you own a house and have insurance, you will have public liability. Check with your insurance company if you are covered when off the premises. If not, ask them what it would cost. Insurance is useless unless you need it, then it's to late.

The big issue with your home insurance may be the upper limit. My photographic insurance covers me up to £5m. There was a story in the news a few days ago about a girl how was left unable to walk after being in a car crash, caused by a guy driving dangerously, was awarded a £23m payout.

If your flash caused someone to crash and, god forbid, they were badly injured you could be liable to pay out a lot of money.

Insurance is a legal requirement at all, but, as mentioned, it could get you out of a lot of trouble when needed. To put it into perspective I pay £350 a year to cover £20k of kit and worldwide public liability insurance. If your kit isn't worth as much insurance could be very handy (not to mention covering your kit for accidental damage).
